Chapter 73 The Last Day

(73)

Ye Wenyu pretended to look at her phone while secretly watching Lin Tingfeng. She was even drawn to him sitting there, slowly reading an English newspaper. His delicate features, clean skin, long, straight legs, impeccably tailored black loungewear, and commanding aura, combined with the warm, bright lighting in the room—light that would make even an ordinary person look several times more attractive, as if filtered—made Lin Tingfeng, already handsome, look even more like a painting. Ye Wenyu was mesmerized, her heart pounding like a rabbit's. She was completely overwhelmed. She secretly muted her phone, opened the camera app, and with trembling fingers, snapped a picture of him.

I thought I was keeping my feelings a secret, but while I was secretly nervous, I was also secretly delighted.

Lin Tingfeng, however, seemed to have eyes that could see a thousand miles. His eyes remained fixed on the book, and he suddenly said slowly, "Send it to me in a bit."

What?! Ye Wenyu felt like she'd been struck by lightning. Her head buzzed, and her hand holding the phone trembled. He'd discovered she'd been secretly taking pictures of him.

He was reading a book, you big liar!

Ye Wenyu's face flushed red. She had been caught taking pictures of him, and the blush spread all over her body like water, even her shoulders and neck felt hot. She pulled her legs, which were originally on the sofa, back, and tried her best to appear relaxed as she spoke in a seemingly calm manner, her body stiff with tension. "What did you say? I don't understand."

The voice was as faint as a mosquito's buzz, and it trembled slightly.

Lin Tingfeng continued reading his book, seemingly casually saying, "My phone number is also my WeChat ID."

What? !

Ye Wenyu suddenly raised her head, her large, grape-like eyes looking at him. She had asked him for his phone number and WeChat ID several times, but he had never given them to her. However, tonight, he actually gave them to her on his own initiative.

What does he, he, he mean?!

This turn of events came so quickly that it caught her off guard and made her heart pound.

Ye Wenyu stared blankly at Lin Tingfeng sitting not far away, her face as red as a bride's veil. She was so shocked that she couldn't say a word.

Lin Tingfeng finally put down his book, slowly stood up, and against the backdrop of his magnificent home, stretched and said to Ye Wenyu, who was sitting there blankly, "Good night." There was a smile in his eyes that he couldn't hide, and his heart was so happy that it seemed to be bubbling out of his chest.

At his age, it's a very happy thing that a lovely young girl genuinely admires him.

For the past ten days, he has been a gentleman, always letting her sleep in guest rooms. His family has many houses and guest rooms, so she can choose whichever one she wants to sleep in.

As for where he sleeps, she has no idea. She wants him to sleep next to her, but she is afraid that he will misunderstand, so she has been trying her best to control herself and not make the request. However, what makes her feel at ease is that, although she does not know where he sleeps, he is always the first person she sees when she opens her eyes the next day.

As the first rays of morning light spread through the room, Ye Wenyu finished washing up and nervously stepped out of the bedroom, afraid that he would suddenly return to China without a word, leaving her alone in a foreign land. Lin Tingfeng, however, was already dressed in comfortable casual clothes, sitting in the living room reading a newspaper or a book, waiting for her. Sometimes he was on the phone, dealing with matters at the company. If he was reading, he would slightly raise his head and say good morning to her. If he was on the phone, he would glance at her, nod, and gesture for her to sit on the sofa and wait for him for a while.

Their understanding was so profound that it felt like they had lived together for a lifetime, not just a little over a month.

Lin Tingfeng slowly walked towards his bedroom. Just as he was about to go upstairs and disappear around the corner of the stairs, the two of them were alone in the large living room. It seemed that the servants who served them had all gone to sleep. Ye Wenyu finally mustered up her courage and couldn't help but speak: "Tomorrow is the tenth day."

Her heart was pounding wildly, as if it would burst out of her chest. The huge room was utterly silent, and she could clearly hear her own racing heartbeat.

She had promised him she would stay with him for ten days, and now it was the ninth day. Tomorrow would be the last day as a way of repaying him for helping her pay her four years of tuition.

Her implication was that tomorrow was the last day, and that he had said he had something important to tell her when he was in China. Why was he still not saying it today, which was the ninth day?

Silence as deep as the sea.

An inner curiosity, like a leaping cat, made Ye Wenyu eager to know the answer. But she pretended to be relaxed and comfortable, leaning back on the sofa. Because of nervousness, her fingertips trembled uncontrollably, like leaves in a storm. To suppress it, she could only hold her right hand with her left.

Lin Tingfeng had his hands in the pockets of his pajamas, looking quite relaxed. He looked at Ye Wenyu, who was eager to know the answer, from a distance. He was silent for a moment, then smiled slightly and said gently to her, "I know."

"You—" Ye Wenyu dared not look at him anymore, her face flushed red, and she turned her face away.

My heart is still pounding wildly, almost to the point of cramping.

Lin Tingfeng's gentle voice rang out from not far away: "I'll take you to Cambridge University tomorrow."

Ye Wenyu dared not speak again, afraid that if she spoke, her voice would tremble, and her eagerness to know the answer would make her seem stupid and annoy him. Therefore, she nodded quietly, and after a while, she softly said, "Good night."

Lin Tingfeng nodded in satisfaction, as if to affirm her taciturnity. He turned around leisurely and disappeared around the corner of the stairs on the second floor.

Night returned to silence.

Ye Wenyu slowly returned to her bedroom, her mind heavy with thoughts. She thought that tomorrow was the last day, and from their conversation in the living room, he must have understood what she meant and given her his answer: he would tell her something important tomorrow.

What were his key words? Confessing his love to her, telling her he loves her, and then living happily ever after, like in a fairy tale about a prince and princess?

Or is it something else entirely, with ulterior motives, something particularly strange?

Ye Wenyu opened her eyes and pondered. After much thought, she felt that life wouldn't be so smooth. Real life wasn't a fairy tale world; there weren't such happy endings. Could someone easily escape their birth and achieve a fulfilling life, just because of an unequal love? Did he love her? What qualities did she have that made him love her? Love was the most unreliable thing in the world, like a floating lamp on flowing water.

She had quickly memorized his phone number and secretly saved it, but when she saw his profile picture and his Moments status of only being visible for three days when she tried to add him on WeChat, she ultimately didn't send him the "add as friend" request.

She couldn't see any of his posts on WeChat Moments because they were only visible for three days, and she seriously suspected that he never posted anything on Moments.

She took a picture of him secretly, and after looking at it, she naturally didn't send it to him.
