Chapter 42 The Waiter

Good morning, Master. It's another sunny day.

The things on the table greeted me cheerfully.

I checked again and again: the fitted butler's attire, the ruby-like eyes, the long, snow-white hair, the delicate, pinkish ears, the exposed limbs with faint stitches... and the numerous weapons casually placed behind him.

No matter how you look at it, it seems to be one of the many powerful puppets created by Yao.

The only problem is, can someone tell me why this is a ragdoll rabbit?! It's even talking!

"Ah, let me introduce myself. I was created by Master Yao to serve you personally. You can call me Alice." Her three-lobed mouth wriggled, and she gave a less-than-perfect butler's bow while holding the carrot between her paws. After stuffing the rest into her mouth, she raised her paw to tuck her long ears up. "So, is there anything you need me to do?"

Examining the bloodstained daggers crossed and nailed to the table behind the other person, and confirming again the other person's seemingly frail short limbs, overly harmless face, and blood-stained snow-white fur, I discreetly and carefully took a few steps back and shook my head vigorously.

God knows where that liquid that looks and smells like blood comes from!

"Oh, I see. There's no mission. What a pity."

The blood-stained rabbit seemed genuinely regretful, rubbing its face repeatedly with its paws to spread the vibrant color. Then it hopped off the table, landing lightly at my feet, kneeling on one knee, and bowing respectfully once more: "In short, in accordance with the Creator's instructions, my ownership has now been transferred to you. In the time to come, I will do my utmost to serve you."

"Please feel free to order me around. If there is anything that is inconvenient for you to do, or anything that you feel might endanger you, please feel free to order me around."

"This body will serve you until the very last moment, and will never betray you even if you are burned to ashes. I swear in Alice's name."

"...What if it gets a new body?" I warily noticed the loophole in its words.

The three-lobed mouth seemed to be smiling, one side slightly raised: "That depends on whether you, Master, are still willing to let me approach." These words made my heart leap, but it was immediately crushed by another kind of fear, "Besides, isn't Lord [An] always protecting you, Master?"

Its gaze went straight behind me, and following its line of sight, I could vaguely make out a figure curled up and sleeping in the shadows that appeared particularly dark under the light.

Perhaps sensing my gaze, the dark eyelashes of the creature, curled up in the shadows, trembled slightly, slowly opened, and looked around blankly before raising its eyes to meet mine.

How can one describe those eyes: as if they contained the light of a thousand stars? As if they were in a dense forest shrouded in mist at dawn? Or as if they were the last ray of light emanating from the void that seemed to devour everything, yet could never escape its grasp?

Good morning... Good night...

After a few seconds of stunned silence, I heard An mutter softly, then lower his eyes again and start snoring softly.

Okay, so this guy wasn't fully awake yet.

The rabbit who called herself Alice let out a deflated puff of laughter, but quickly regained her composure and, with perfect and elegant butler's manner, raised her hand to signal me to go out for a meal.

"Correction" means "Let me open the door." The doorknob is too high for a ragdoll rabbit that's only as long as my calf; even if Alice jumps with all her might, she can't reach it at all.

Well, it doesn't seem to be doing any harm at the moment, and besides, this is my home turf.

After straightening my clothes again, I pushed open the door and stepped out. In the spacious and bright circular hall, only doll-like maids were bustling about, taking out the books I needed from the storage room and putting the ones I had finished reading back on their corresponding shelves.

I looked around at the scene before me and couldn't help but exclaim, "There are so many books here. I wonder if anyone will ever be able to read them all."

"Do you wish to know the theoretical answer, or the precise conclusion, Master?"

Alice walked briskly ahead of me, tilting her head as she asked me. One of her long ears drooped behind her, while the other stood up. If you ignored the blush on her cheeks, she actually looked quite cute.

"Is there a difference between the two?" I asked.

Alice nodded: "Yes, there is a big difference."

"Ignoring categorization and focusing solely on quantity, based on current investigations, this library is receiving an additional half to three books per day. While most are merely fragmentary and seemingly useless books—to put it simply, everyday gossip and rumors—these are typically thin, but their sheer number and complexity, along with some distorted and repetitive information, cannot be ignored. Therefore, theoretically, this library currently comprises nearly 4,200 stacks, each with four fully stocked, uncategorized bookshelves, totaling approximately 30,000 to 50,000 books, roughly exceeding a trillion words. To read through the books in just one stack would take approximately..."

"...Stop!" I clutched my head, which was starting to throb. "Don't say any more. I already know I can't finish watching!"

"It seems you have a good sense of self-awareness, Master."

Alice let out a gloating sound, then immediately scrambled out of my kicking range on all fours, turned around at a distance, and covered her mouth to laugh again.
