Chapter 249 Perseverance

The rescue operation continued for two more days, after which all personnel retreated to a safe area and ceased their search and rescue efforts.

It's not that everyone has been rescued, but rather that the continuous heavy rain has made rescue efforts impossible.

Several groups eventually gathered together and counted the number of people rescued. There were more than 3,700 people in total, of whom more than 500 were seriously injured.

When Mo Qing left, he took with him about a thousand prisoners and a thousand ordinary people. By this calculation, the number of missing and dead people was as high as five thousand.

These approximately five thousand lives were not lost due to natural disasters, but rather to man-made calamities, which is truly outrageous.

When Li Ke heard Zhong San's name, he contacted Tanaka's accomplices. Unfortunately, Zhong San had already led his men to escape, and with the heavy rain continuing, it was impossible to pursue them for the time being.

Of the more than 3,700 people rescued, nearly 1,000 were initially driven away. With the addition of 1,500 who stayed behind for disaster relief, there are still more than 4,000 people stranded outside the city.

Feeding over four thousand people is no small matter. The supplies they have can only last for four or five days, and that's only if each person gets half a meal a day.

After the rescue work stopped, Li Ke followed the temporarily organized material search team to look for usable supplies, water storage equipment, fuel for boiling water, rain gear, insulation materials, means of transportation, and anything else that might be useful.

During her search, Li Ke discovered a hidden underground warehouse, but it had already been emptied. She had stored a batch of supplies inside, including food, drinks, and daily necessities, mainly food and drinks, as well as 3,000 kilograms of dog food and a batch of pet snacks.

Then they found someone to pretend that they had discovered these things by chance. The other team members were overjoyed when they found these supplies. With these things, they could last for another week without any problem.

A week later, the heavy rains continued, during which more than a hundred people died. Due to severe injuries and infections, coupled with the poor conditions for recuperation, they ultimately did not survive.

The food supplies will last for at most three days, and a group of people are already planning to leave and return to the Qingyuan base for help.

The remaining gasoline and vehicles could only carry a maximum of three hundred people. The rescue team argued for several hours over these three hundred spots, and finally selected three hundred elites to set off back to base.

Because it's been raining continuously, the journey back will definitely be fraught with difficulties, and the selected people must be able to handle all sorts of problems.

Li Ke stayed. She had everything she needed, so there was no need to compete with these people. When she could no longer stay, she would naturally leave.

During this week, she sent people to inquire about the backgrounds and pasts of many people, and to see if they could screen out some talented individuals or suspicious persons, including Chen Ziyue and her brother.

After the rescue work stopped, many people were idle, so this job was a good way to pass the time.

Li Ke then learned that Xiao Yi had left with his men the year after she left, supposedly because he had received a transfer order from his superiors.

The management of the shelter was handed over to the Jian family. In the third year, the shelter began to suffer from severe shortages of various supplies and could no longer continue.

The refugees below, driven by extreme hunger, launched several riots. In the end, the Jian family distributed grain twice to appease them.

But these were just delaying tactics by the Jian family. After distributing the food, they quietly left the shelter with their own people and some collaborators.

By the time everyone realized something was wrong, the people were long gone. However, this group still had some conscience; they didn't take all the food and left some rations in the shelter.

Those who discovered the food supplies regained control and took over the management of the shelter. With the shelter's breeding facilities also producing some food, everyone managed to survive until after the flood.

However, without effective management and the support of renewable resources, the shelter could no longer operate. The higher-ups held a meeting and stated that they had run out of food, leaving the remaining people to choose whether to leave to make a living or stay and wait to die.

During this time, Old Mrs. Chen also died of hunger, and Chen Niansheng's new wife, Zheng Fang, could not bear it any longer and ran away with her child who was less than a year old.

Chen Ziyue's children also took their belongings and ran away, abandoning their parents. They couldn't even support themselves, let alone their parents. They left quietly, without Chen Ziyue and Jin Kaixiong noticing at all.

After discovering that the children had run away with all their belongings, Jin Kaixiong laughed loudly and then went mad. Chen Ziyue was unable to take care of a madman, so she naturally released Jin Kaixiong.

Chen Niansheng and Chen Ziyue were able to escape to Guanzhen Community alive because Chen Zhizhi secretly gave Chen Niansheng some food before the Zuo family left with the Jian family.

Chen Niansheng hid the grain without telling anyone, and in the end, it saved both his and Chen Ziyue's lives.

Li Ke sat down with the people who had asked the questions and asked them if they had any relatives left. He said that if they were to meet again by chance, he could help them reunite.

After thinking for a while, Chen Niansheng only said Chen Zhizhi's name: "My daughter is also heartless. She only left some food and left. I think she doesn't want me as her father anymore."

As for the others, Chen Niansheng kept saying they were all gone. It seemed that Li Zhenzhen and her two children were already dead in Chen Niansheng's eyes.

Chen Qi is indeed dead. That miracle drug was a slow-acting poison. After being injected, Chen Qi lived for nearly two more years, but in the end, he did not survive.

Because they had been eating very little these past few days, Chen Niansheng and Chen Ziyue sounded weak and listless when they spoke, and looked very old. Actually, only Chen Ziyue was older, in her early sixties, while Chen Niansheng was only in his fifties.
