Everyone at Beichuan No. 1 High School knew Gu Linzhao. With his outstanding looks, aloof personality, and a firm hold on the top spot in the grade for years, he was the most brilliant prodigy, and...
Chapter 17: No Benefits
Chapter Summary: If there's no benefit for you, I'll create some for you.
This week, Beichuan No.1 Middle School is having a short break. Students will have self-study sessions at school for both days of the weekend, but they can choose not to attend the evening self-study session on Saturday night and instead go home.
This might be a choice for others, but for Fu Xianyin, it wasn't at all. If she had any other option, she would never go home.
The two days of self-study passed quickly, and by Monday, there were only 4 days left until the monthly exam.
Fu Xianyin was awakened by a nightmare.
She dreamt that she was bound hand and foot, and a burly executioner, strong enough to punch ten of her, stood beside her, wielding a large sword comparable to the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, rubbing it back and forth against her neck.
The icy touch traveled from her neck all the way to her bone marrow, and Fu Xianyin felt her entire spine go numb.
The blood from the knife tip dripped down her cheek and onto the ground, where it congealed into the shape of a "4".
Once I woke up, I couldn't fall back asleep.
Fu Xianyin stood on the balcony for a while, memorized some vocabulary words, listened to some English listening practice, and then packed her schoolbag to go to the classroom for self-study.
After watching for about twenty minutes, a bag of steaming hot buns was placed on Fu Xianyin's table.
Cheng Lingling, biting into a steamed bun, placed another cup of soy milk she was carrying on Fu Xianyin's table and said, "Ta-da~ Zhaozhao Delivery, at your service."
She cleared her throat and said in a deliberately serious tone, "Today's delivery includes wood ear mushroom and pork soup dumplings and red date soy milk."
The steam from the xiaolongbao wafted onto Fu Xianyin's hands, condensing into a thin layer of water droplets.
Fu Xianyin took out her phone and sent a red envelope to Cheng Zhaozhao. Cheng Zhaozhao chuckled and said, "Then I won't be polite! Damn! Xianyin, why did you send such a big one? The buns and soy milk only cost a few yuan."
Cheng Zhaozhao stared at the bright 200 on the WeChat interface, her mouth agape.
Fu Xianyin smiled and said, "Labor is expensive, and Zhaozhao's delivery service is so thoughtful, I love it."
"But...but..."
Fu Xianyin blinked: "There's no 'but' about it. Just take it. I might need you to bring me food in the future."
Cheng Zhaozhao smiled and said, "Okay! Zhaozhao Delivery, at your service!"
The morning passed quickly, and Fu Xianyin felt that her mind was working better, perhaps because of the hot breakfast that Cheng Zhaozhao had brought.
During the long break, Lin Anxu clamored to buy something to fill his stomach and dragged Gu Linzhao to the cafeteria. Cheng Zhaozhao couldn't concentrate on her studies during the break, so she simply sat in Gu Linzhao's seat and chatted idly with Fu Xianyin.
Fu Xianyin is still struggling with chemistry.
There are still 4 days until the monthly exam. I've recovered well this past week. Except for chemistry, I can maintain my speed and quality in answering questions in other subjects.
Only chemistry.
Even now, she still loses points on some basic questions where she can't remember the key points, and it's even harder for her to do the slightly more difficult ones.
Fu Xianyin stared at the words on the exercise book, desperately searching her mind for knowledge. However, the knowledge in her mind seemed to be playing hide-and-seek with her. She searched and searched, but her mind was cold and empty, and all she got was a feeling of desolation and sorrow.
She threw down her pen, looked up to the sky, and sighed, "This is so hard!"
Cheng Zhaozhao, who was munching on a cookie, said upon hearing this, "What is this, chemistry? Hey, you can ask Gu Linzhao when he gets back, he's really good at chemistry."
Fu Xianyin thought to herself, "I know he's really good at chemistry. Half of the reason I was able to go from zero to my current level in chemistry in just over a week is thanks to Gu Linzhao's notes and his explanations of the problems to me."
only.
Fu Xianyin shook her head and said, "I can't rely on Gu Linzhao for everything. It won't do me any good to depend on him."
At the entrance, Gu Linzhao, who had just finished buying food with Lin Anxu, paused slightly upon hearing this.
Lin Anxu's mouth was stuffed with bread, his mind wandering to Hokkaido, completely unaware of what had happened in those few seconds. He stepped forward and snapped his fingers near Cheng Zhaozhao's ear, then laughed and ran ahead to dodge Cheng Zhaozhao's punches.
Gu Linzhao pulled out a chair and sat down.
Fu Xianyin didn't pay attention to him and continued to struggle with the problem, but she still had no ideas until the class bell rang.
She sighed, put away the chemistry textbook, and took out the textbook for the next class.
This lesson is biology.
Biology used to be Fu Xianyin's most dreaded subject, but now that she has chemistry as a comparison, she finds even biology class more interesting.
Almost all the teachers only gave two days of review time for the monthly exam, and today's class followed the same schedule as the first round of review.
The 45-minute class passed quickly for Fu Xianyin. After class, she continued to work on the chemistry problem that she couldn't figure out.
Gu Linzhao stared at the chemistry problem, feeling conflicted.
Normally, if Gu Linzhao noticed that Fu Xianyin hadn't figured out a problem after so long, he would proactively ask her if she wanted him to explain it, and then give her some pointers.
Now, Fu Xianyin's words, "There's no benefit in relying on him," seem to have been turned into a 360-degree surround sound, constantly echoing in his mind.
Fu Xianyin was arguing with the question, while he was arguing with Fu Xianyin.
Gu Linzhao felt utterly bewildered, because he didn't even know what he was arguing about with Fu Xianyin.
After a long pause, he nudged Fu Xianyin's arm and lowered his head first: "Do you want me to explain it to you?"
However.
The girl's refusal was crisp and decisive.
"No need, I'll take a look myself."
Gu Linzhao withdrew his hand.
He now knows what he was arguing with Fu Xianyin about.
The two barely spoke all day.
Gu Linzhao was arguing with Fu Xianyin, and Fu Xianyin...
If Fu Xianyin knew that what Gu Linzhao heard had caused this beautiful misunderstanding, she would say that it was not a misunderstanding.
Gu Linzhao's mistake was actually the same as another layer of meaning in Fu Xianyin's heart.
It wasn't just chemistry questions; it was questions from all aspects of life. Fu Xianyin felt that relying on Gu Linzhao wouldn't do her any good.
She couldn't be so dependent on someone she'd only known for a little over a week.
Or rather, she cannot have the emotion of dependence on people.
However, the reason why Fu Xianyin didn't talk much to Gu Linzhao at this moment was not because of this.
Rather, she was genuinely studying.
The executioner in ancient Greece, who was in charge of monthly examinations, was already sharpening his knife. Fu Xianyin could even hear the sound of metal rubbing against the whetstone. The light reflected from the gleaming blade shone on her face, making it hard for her to open her eyes.
During the afternoon break, Cheng Lingling was taking a nap at her desk when Lin Anxu dragged Gu Linzhao to buy some snacks.
Gu Linzhao was speechless: "Why didn't you buy more this morning?"
Lin Anxu chuckled: "You know I get hungry as soon as I start studying."
As the two were talking, Fu Xianyin stretched and glanced at Song Yaoge getting water from the water dispenser.
As Song Yaoge filled her cup with water, she glanced in her direction. When Fu Xianyin turned to look at her, she immediately looked away.
This cautious manner inexplicably reminded Fu Xianyin of last week's arts and culture performance.
She suddenly had a wicked idea.
She didn't check the surveillance footage because she didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but that doesn't mean she wasn't eager for revenge.
So just as Gu Linzhao was about to leave, Fu Xianyin suddenly reached out and tugged at the corner of his clothes.
Gu Linzhao's emotionless voice came through: "What are you doing?"
Fu Xianyin tilted her head: "The class monitor is kind and compassionate. Could you please go to the cafeteria and bring me back a cup of mango pomelo sago?"
Gu Linzhao chuckled, placed his hand on the table, looked down at him, and asked, "You need my help?"
Fu Xianyin: "Mmm."
She took out her meal card from her pocket and handed it over: "Here, my meal card, thank you, class monitor."
The next second, she saw Gu Linzhao raise an eyebrow and say with a half-smile, "Didn't you say that relying on me would bring no benefit?"
Fu Xianyin: "..."
She was about to say that it wasn't necessary when Gu Linzhao lazily spoke up:
"Fine, if there's no benefit to it, I'll just create some for you."
