New book is open: "Qing Dynasty Transmigration: Fourth Master's Beloved Consort", welcoming new and old friends to follow.
Before transmigration, Lin Mengyao was a leftover woman ...
Night fell quickly, and the Fourth Master naturally stayed overnight at Lanqin's place. The maids, no longer needing to keep watch in the mansion, went to their assigned rooms to sleep. Lanqin and the Fourth Master also washed up and went to bed early.
The two had rested all afternoon, so they couldn't sleep well that night. Lanqin had her period again, in the temple's meditation room. No matter what the Fourth Master tried, it wouldn't work, so the two of them lit a lamp and played chess. Luckily, this was a good way to pass the time in the meditation room.
Fourth Master took the chessboard to the bed, then lit two large white candles on the bedside lamp stand, the light barely enough to make the pieces on the chessboard visible.
Lanqin knew how to play chess before she transmigrated, and she was even a fairly talented amateur chess enthusiast. After transmigrating, none of the maids knew how to play, and the Fourth Master didn't know that Lanqin could play chess, nor had he ever asked her to play. So Lanqin hadn't played chess for several years. Now that she had finally brought it out, it greatly surprised the Fourth Master.
"You play chess quite well!" Fourth Master said after playing for a long time without gaining any advantage over Lanqin.
"I learned chess from my father before, and I can hold my own against him and my elder brother," Lanqin lied. In truth, as a transmigrator, her chess skills were mainly due to having seen many chess games and knowing how to solve them. Therefore, she could immediately understand the chess game set up by the Fourth Prince, which is why she could play to a draw with him. Princes like the Fourth Prince, having been taught horsemanship, chess, and other skills by renowned teachers from a young age, naturally possessed excellent abilities.
"Your skill is extraordinary; even I can't beat you." The more Fourth Master played, the more he felt that Lanqin's chess skills were superb. All the moves he had painstakingly prepared were cleverly countered by her.
"I was just lucky. Your chess skills are truly superior," Lanqin said. If she hadn't seen many chess games before, she really wouldn't be able to beat Fourth Master right now.
The Fourth Prince stopped speaking to Lanqin and focused all his attention on the chessboard. He still didn't want to lose face in front of Lanqin; he was unwilling to be defeated even by his own concubine!
Seeing that Fourth Master's chess skills were becoming increasingly formidable, with each move more ruthless than the last, Lanqin couldn't help but pay close attention to the moves behind each one. Lanqin had watched chess videos before, studying each move in those games one by one, trying to decipher the hidden strategies and traps behind each move. Fourth Master's traps were repeatedly thwarted by Lanqin, making the game increasingly thrilling and exciting.
Among the princes, the Fourth Prince was considered to be the best at chess. He had not encountered an opponent like Lanqin who could block his moves one after another for a long time, and he was amazed by Lanqin's superb chess skills.
In the end, Lanqin and Fourth Master each had only four or five pieces left, and each piece restricted the other's moves, so neither dared to move a single piece easily.
Fourth Master and Lanqin stared intently at each other's pieces and their own, neither of them showing any signs of sleepiness. They were like two martial arts masters who were evenly matched, neither daring to reveal a weakness, and they greatly admired each other's excellence and decisiveness.
Outside, the second watch drum had already sounded. Lanqin's heart wavered. There was no need for her to confront the Fourth Master like this. What did it matter if she lost to him? He was her husband and her boss. Why should she push him to this point?
So, Lanqin decided to reveal a slight flaw, allowing the Fourth Prince to win the game. She picked up one of her pieces and moved it. The Fourth Prince stared at Lanqin's move, pondered for a moment, then smiled and quickly moved one of his own pieces.
"My lord, I have lost!" Lanqin saw that the Fourth Master had indeed made a fatal move. As long as she made that move, the Fourth Master could decide the outcome with one strike.
"Did you deliberately lose to me?" Fourth Master felt that with Lanqin's chess skills, she shouldn't have made such a mistake.
"My chess skills are inferior to yours, sir. How could I possibly have deliberately lost to you?" Lanqin insisted through gritted teeth.
Fourth Master stared into Lanqin's eyes, and seeing the little woman's firm words, he breathed a sigh of relief and said, "You almost won against me!"
Lanqin smiled smugly and said, "I am already very satisfied that I was able to force you to this point."
Fourth Master smiled and said, "Only you could have driven me to this point."
Lanqin pushed the chessboard aside and said coquettishly, "I'm tired and want to sleep."
The Fourth Prince affectionately tapped Lanqin's nose, then put away the chessboard, poured her a cup of hot tea, and personally fed her it before blowing out the candles, going to bed, and embracing Lanqin as they fell asleep.
"Master, Yichen said that my destiny is extremely noble, but I will encounter some difficulties and obstacles," Lanqin said with her eyes closed.
"You are my woman, your destiny is naturally extraordinary. I will accompany you through any hardship and danger." Fourth Master said, closing his eyes and embracing Lanqin from behind.
In the darkness, Lanqin's lips curled up slightly as she said, "Master, will you always believe in me? I ask for nothing more than your lifelong trust."
Fourth Master held Lanqin's waist and gently rubbed her lower abdomen, as if trying to transfer the warmth of his palm to Lanqin's abdomen.
“If it weren’t for the sake of the Ulanara family, I would have crippled her long ago,” the Fourth Master said.
Upon hearing this, Lanqin said with slight agitation, "No, Your Majesty, you cannot depose her. If Your Majesty deposes her for my sake, the world will only curse me as a witch who bewitched Your Majesty, and will also accuse Your Majesty of favoring a concubine over your wife. I do not want Your Majesty to bear such a reputation. Therefore, I would rather remain in this identity forever. I only pray for Your Majesty's complete trust."
Fourth Master held Lanqin tightly, silently vowing in his heart: if he were to ascend to that supreme position in the future, he would definitely give this woman the highest honor.
The next day, the two slept until dawn without waking up. The maids dared not come in, so they waited outside the room. The monks who got up early began to go to the main hall to chant sutras, and Lanqin and the Fourth Master were awakened by the sound of chanting and bell ringing.
"Master, let's go listen to the monks chanting sutras. I heard you can hear Buddhist chants!" Lanqin turned to the Fourth Master beside her and said.
"If you want to hear it, I'll go with you," said the Fourth Master.
The two then woke up. Nianxue and Shuiling came in to help them change their clothes and wash their faces. After that, they went to the dining hall to get breakfast. However, Lanqin was afraid that the monks' morning chanting would end, so she didn't bother to eat and took Fourth Master's hand to head towards the Mahavira Hall.
When they ran to the outside of the main hall, they saw many monks dressed in monks' robes kneeling on the ground, with their hands clasped together, their eyes closed, and chanting scriptures.
