Chapter 12 sold out

A few days later, just as dawn was breaking, Mr. and Mrs. Lin got up early and carefully carried the dozens of new clothes they had rushed to make over the past few days into the shop.

Lin's mother gently brushed away non-existent dust from her clothes with a feather duster, while Lin's father stood at the door, looking at the empty street, his heart filled with anxiety.

"Yun'er, do you think these clothes... will really sell?" Lin's father rubbed his hands together, his tone revealing a hint of apprehension.

Lin Yun was adjusting her clothes in front of the bronze mirror when she heard this. She turned around and smiled slightly: "Father, don't worry, as long as someone comes in to look, we won't have to worry about selling them."

Today she wore a light blue ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress) of her own design, with a few elegant orchids embroidered on the collar and the cuffs slightly gathered, which accentuated her slender figure and light steps.

Upon seeing this, Lin's mother couldn't help but exclaim, "Yun'er, you look just like a fairy who has stepped out of a painting!"

Lin Yun smiled, but didn't say anything more.

She knew that in this era, most clothes were the same style, but the dresses she designed not only retained the traditional charm but also added some novel details, which was enough to make people's eyes light up.

---

After the shops opened, pedestrians hurried along the street, mostly housewives going to the early market to buy vegetables and vendors carrying loads, with very few people stopping to look at clothes.

Lin's father stood behind the counter, gazing longingly at the door, his palms damp with a thin layer of sweat.

Lin's mother was busy tidying up the clothes, glancing up every now and then, her eyes also showing a hint of anxiety.

Lin Yun, however, remained calm and unhurried. She moved a stool to the doorway, held a cup of hot tea in her hands, and sipped it slowly. Her dress shimmered softly in the morning light, attracting frequent glances from passersby.

By noon, the streets were gradually becoming more crowded.

A well-dressed middle-aged woman carrying a basket passed by. Her gaze inadvertently swept over Lin Yun's dress, and she paused, unable to resist taking a few steps closer to examine her closely.

"Young lady, where did you buy your clothes?" A hint of amazement flashed in the woman's eyes.

Lin Yun put down her teacup and smiled sweetly: "These are new designs made in our own shop. If you like them, Madam, you are welcome to come in and take a look."

The woman nodded and followed Lin Yun into the shop.

As soon as she entered, her eyes were drawn to the various dresses hanging on the wall.

Simple and elegant ruqun, exquisite and gorgeous diaojinshan, light and flowing gauze... each piece is different from what is commonly seen on the market, yet they are just right to make people love them.

"These... were all made by you?" The woman couldn't help but reach out and touch a lotus-root-colored ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress). It was soft to the touch and the stitches were fine, clearly indicating that the workmanship was excellent.

Upon seeing this, Lin's mother quickly stepped forward to introduce them: "Yes, they are all made by our own family. The materials are of high quality, and the prices are fair."

The woman asked about the prices of several items and found that the most expensive one was only 150 coins, which was only a few dozen coins more expensive than other clothing shops in the city. She immediately made her decision: "This one, this one, and that one, I'll take them all!"

Mr. Lin was taken aback, but then his face lit up with joy, and he quickly called Lin Feng over to help pack the food.

Lin Yun smiled and said to the woman, "Madam has excellent taste. These are all the latest designs. You won't run into anyone wearing the same clothes."

The woman nodded in satisfaction, paid the money, and then couldn't help but glance at Lin Yun again: "Miss, are you selling this outfit?"

Lin Yun shook her head and smiled, "This is one I wore myself, but if you like it, we can make a similar one for you."

The woman's eyes lit up: "That's wonderful! I'll come again in a few days!"

Lin Yun quickly took out paper and pen, measured the woman's dimensions, noted down her features and address, and asked for a deposit of 10 coins.

This was essential to serving every customer well. Lin Feng watched from the side and silently made a note of it. He couldn't help but admire his younger sister's intelligence and her serious and responsible work ethic, while he, as her older brother, hadn't been able to offer much help.

After the woman left, Lin Feng said to Lin Yun, "Second Sister, let me write this down. I know how to write it."

Upon hearing this, Lin Yun smiled slyly, "Big brother is the best. Then I'll trouble you." Lin Feng shook his head helplessly; his little sister had become mischievous.

---

The woman's departure seemed to flip a switch, and the number of customers in the shop gradually increased.

Some people were attracted by Lin Yun's dress, while others had heard about the new styles in the shop and came specifically to take a look.

"The embroidery on this ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress) is truly exquisite; I've never seen anything like it outside!"

"The buttons on this Chinese-style jacket are so exquisitely made, and the price is so reasonable!"

"I'll take this gauze dress! My young lady will definitely love it!"

The guests' exclamations of praise rose and fell, and Mr. and Mrs. Lin were so busy that their feet barely touched the ground, while Lin Feng carried more and more clothes from the backyard time and time again.

Some styles and colors were sold out, and customers wanted to customize. Lin Feng held a small notebook in one hand and a tape measure in the other to register the customers' orders.

Lin Yun stood behind the counter, collecting money while observing the customers' reactions, secretly noting which styles were the most popular.

By the afternoon, all of Ma Yi's ready-made clothes had been snapped up, leaving only a few high-end silk dresses.

A young lady dressed in fine clothes entered with her maid. She immediately took a liking to the lotus-colored gauze dress, but after asking the price, she frowned: "So expensive?"

Lin Yun explained gently, "Miss, this is the finest silk fabric, and the embroidery is exquisite. Wearing it out will certainly not make you look bad."

The young lady hesitated for a moment, but ultimately took out her money and bought it.

Seeing this, the other customers also raised their bids to compete for the remaining few high-end dresses, eventually selling them for twice the original price.

---

As night fell, the Lin family shop finally closed. Father Lin let out a long sigh of relief, slumped into a stool, panting, but couldn't hide his joy. Mother Lin rubbed her aching back, her face beaming with smiles. Lin Feng sat by the counter, beginning to tally the day's earnings. His eyes shone brighter as he counted the copper coins in the money box.
