Chapter 544 The Early-Death Bystander in the Reborn Mother-in-Law Novel (12)
Mr. Jiang and his third uncle originally planned to go back the next day, but because his second aunt came back, they decided to stay an extra day.
They have a two-week vacation this time, and they need to go back to visit both sets of parents. With the time spent traveling, they won't be able to stay at home for more than a few days. They need to spend more time together.
The next morning, when Jiang Yue woke up, she was all alone on the kang (a heated brick bed). She looked around and was a little confused. She had stayed up late chatting with her cousin from her aunt's family the night before. Actually, none of them had gone to bed early. She had even heard people talking when she went to sleep the night before.
After getting dressed and folding the blankets, she went outside and saw that the meal was almost ready. The rest of the people were chatting in another room. When they saw Jiang Yue wake up, they all looked at her and smiled, making Jiang Yue, an old hag, a little embarrassed. When she saw her grandmother, Jiang Yue asked, "Grandma, why didn't you wake me up?"
"You must be exhausted from cooking for so many people yesterday, so let you get some more sleep."
"Ha, it's not that tiring."
Jiang Yue quickly washed her face, mainly because she hadn't brought her toothbrush or anything back with her. She figured she was leaving early this morning, so it wouldn't be too late to go back and wash up. Who knew she'd end up staying another day?
I had sweet potato porridge for breakfast, with some homemade pickled vegetables as a side dish. Although there was some meat, I planned to eat that for lunch, so I just had a quick bite in the morning.
We prepared several big dishes for lunch, but it wasn't as lavish as yesterday. There was a chicken stew with mushrooms, the chicken was freshly killed, and my second aunt couldn't stop my grandmother from doing so. There was also pork with pickled cabbage and glass noodles, two fish, one braised and one sweet and sour. My grandmother also had Jiang Yue cook the leftover vegetables from yesterday.
There were no dumplings for dinner, so we ate steamed buns made from a mixture of wheat and flour. We finished all the wheat flour at home. After eating and drinking our fill, it was afternoon, and it was getting late. Uncle Jiang and Third Uncle had to go to work tomorrow, so although we were a little reluctant, we still had to say goodbye.
She came carrying big bags and small bags, but it was much lighter on the way home. On the way back, she only encountered a tractor halfway through her journey. She almost missed the bus after returning to the city. It was already very late when she got home. Jiang Yue brushed her teeth and went to bed.
The next morning, when Jiang Yue got up, her father and older brother had already left. Jiang Yue had one more day off than them because she didn't start work until tomorrow. Her mother was rummaging around in the house early in the morning. When Jiang Yue asked her what she was doing, her mother replied, "Your father asked me to buy some things for your second aunt to take with her when she leaves. I just wanted to get something."
"We only have so few things in our house, what can you find by turning everything upside down? My dad didn't say anything."
He said he would go to the factory to see if he could exchange some snack coupons or something.
When are you leaving?
"I'm leaving tomorrow."
"Then I'll go out and see if I can buy something."
"Then be careful."
After telling her mother, Jiang Yue ran out. She didn't need anything, but she was thinking about what to bring. She rode her bike around for a while and picked out two dried chickens, a box of pastries, two bottles of sesame paste, two bottles of pickles, five cans of fruit, and a box of tea. That was about all she needed. The main thing was that these things could be stored for a long time and would be easy to carry when she left.
After returning home, Jiang's mother handed the things over to her. She breathed a sigh of relief. However, the question remained: how to pack the things? A mesh bag wouldn't be secure enough. For the bottles and jars, she found a cloth bag and filled it with some straw to prevent them from getting damaged. She decided to use a mesh bag for the rest. Finally, she found a burlap sack, as she knew she would need to pack things for her grandparents as well.
When Jiang's father returned and saw what Jiang's mother had prepared, he sighed that the snack coupons he had exchanged were a bit unnecessary. After learning that Jiang Yue had bought them, he gave her the money back.
The next day, Jiang's father swapped shifts with someone else and didn't go to work. Although Jiang Yue and Jiang Ze didn't have much of an impression of their second aunt, and Jiang Ze had never even met her, Jiang's father was different. He had been raised by his eldest and second aunts since he was a child, and the siblings had a very deep bond. Around noon, his second uncle and second aunt came over together. Sure enough, his second uncle hadn't gone to work either, probably because he had also swapped shifts with someone else.
The family didn't eat at home. They had Peking duck for lunch and hot pot for dinner. Afterward, they took the children to the mall and each of them bought a pair of sneakers. During the shopping trip, the second aunt's husband tried to pay, but he couldn't win against Jiang's father and second uncle. The train was at 10 p.m., so after dinner, they took them to the train station.
I was worried about not being able to get home at night since there were no buses. So, I dropped Jiang's dad and third uncle off at the train station and then left. I cried a lot when we parted. It was already very late when I got home. I composed myself and went to sleep because I had to go to work the next day.
Jiang Yue got up very early the next day; in fact, everyone got up very early.
After having breakfast at home, I rode my bicycle to work. There was a lot to do at the station today; I didn't have a moment to rest all morning. I was busy until noon, when I grabbed my lunchbox and went to the cafeteria for lunch. It was my first day at work, so I didn't know what the food would be like.
Today's menu includes braised carp with tofu, braised radish with potatoes, stir-fried cabbage, and pumpkin and corn pancakes as the main dish. In addition to these, there is an extra soup, kelp and pork rib soup. Of course, there are only a few pieces of pork ribs; otherwise, they would all be used for other dishes. Who would be so extravagant as to make soup?
After finishing her meal, she went back to work. She was too busy these past few days to slack off. With two hours left before she was to leave work, a colleague rushed over to find Jiang Yue. It turned out that someone in his family had gone to the hospital and he needed to borrow her bicycle. Jiang Yue took the key out of her bag and gave it to him, telling him not to thank her and to hurry to the hospital.
When she got off work, the person still hadn't returned. It seemed this was no small matter. The bicycle wasn't coming back today, so she had no choice but to take the bus home. It had been a while since she had experienced the feeling of squeezing onto a crowded bus. When she got off, Jiang Yue patted her wrinkled clothes. Sure enough, she still wasn't used to it.
When she got home, Aunt Jiang asked her about the bicycle, thinking she had lost the key. After explaining, she looked at the food Aunt Jiang had prepared. Sure enough, after the New Year, the house had returned to normal. Sigh.
"Why are you sighing? You've spent a lot of money this year, so you'll have to be more frugal from now on."
"You still need to eat some meat. Eating well regularly to keep your body healthy is better than saving money and ruining your health, only to end up spending all your money on hospital bills."
"They've spouted a lot of fallacies. We didn't eat meat every day before, and we're still perfectly healthy."
Jiang Yue thought to herself, "That's what you think. If I hadn't given you the pills, I wouldn't have argued with my mother. They're used to being frugal. Once I bring the things back, they'll eat them, won't they?"
"You're not allowed to buy any more. We'll buy meat if we have meat coupons, but we can't afford expensive meat."
"Yeah, I wanted to go fishing. I can eat the fish I catch, right?"
"If you can catch fish every day, I'll cook for you every day."
"No, I'll get tired of eating that every day."
"You're dreaming."
