Chapter 270 Female Shoe Factory Workers in the 1970s 14 shuhaige.net

After seeing Song Lin off, Xu Keke returned to work at the factory.

As soon as I entered the factory, I saw Du Yi. He was sitting at the factory gate, chatting idly with the gatekeeper.

Upon seeing Xu Keke, he took the initiative to stand up, leaning on his crutches, and greet her.

This made Xu Keke feel somewhat flattered.

After greeting him, Xu Keke walked inside, noticing that he was following behind her. She turned around suspiciously and asked, "What are you doing?"

Du Yi looked at her nonchalantly, "You're in charge of the warehouse now, right? My leg is like this, so my uncle told me to stay with you for now. I'll go back to the caravan once my leg heals."

"Really!" Xu Keke pushed the cart without moving. Others are all about making a splash when they first take office, but she's been given a useless person right off the bat. What does the factory leadership mean by this?

"You look down on me? I can tell." Du Yi glanced at Xu Keke without any politeness, then walked up to her with his crutches.

“They used to say you were honest and reliable, but I found out at the hospital that you’re two-faced. You don’t need to pretend anymore; I saw through you a long time ago. You’re a wicked woman.”

"You know, a sharp tongue gets you killed quickly." Xu Keke rolled her eyes at him and pushed the cart quickly inside.

Du Yi was furious but there was nothing he could do. It was his bad leg that prevented him from catching up.

Xu Keke got on her bike, then deliberately rode back and circled around Du Yi. "I just wanted to remind you that if you don't want to see me, you should find a way to get lost. If you don't want to leave, then shut your mouth."

After threatening him, Xu Keke pedaled her bike quickly and soon arrived at the factory's warehouse. It was a fairly large factory building. There was a small office near the entrance.

There are three desks in the office. Two are placed against the wall, and the third, which looks like it was recently placed, is placed across the two desks. The three desks are all different, even their colors are different.

Both desks opposite each other were occupied. The older man on the right was clearly a long-time alcoholic; his eyes were swollen and bloodshot. His face was an unhealthy pale white.

Another man was sleeping, slumped over the table. Judging from his thin and small build, he was probably not very tall.

The original owner used to work in the workshop, and tasks like requisitioning materials were done by the piece-rate workers in the workshop.

Although she had never interacted with these two people, she did have an impression of them.

The older man, surnamed Liao, was a veteran worker who had been in the factory since before Liberation. The thinner one, probably under thirty, was named Liu Wen. The original owner only knew that such a person existed in the factory; he knew nothing more.

Seeing her come in, Master Liao quickly greeted her and even kicked Liu Wen, who was sitting opposite him.

"Master Zeng, come quick! We'll be working together from now on. Hurry up..."

Liu Wen was fast asleep. He squinted and raised his head, but he was so sleepy that he couldn't see who was who. His head slumped down and he lay back down.

Master Liao smiled sheepishly at Xu Keke, pointed to the empty table and chair, and said proudly, "I found these for you at the factory yesterday. They even have drawers. The chair was a bit loose, so Xiao Liu sturdied it for you yesterday."

Xu Keke nodded and smiled in agreement. She walked to the table and chairs and put her schoolbag on the table.

Not bad. This table not only has drawers, but also regular gray horizontal lines with water stains on it, so it must have been wiped clean by the owner. It's just that the rag used is a bit dirty.

Xu Keke sat down and looked around the warehouse office. The cobwebs in the corner, the mottled walls, and the window glass that made it impossible to see the outside world—it really did resemble an abandoned warehouse.

Xu Keke and Master Liao were speechless, neither of them knowing what to talk about.

Master Liao kicked Liu Wen again, but it had no effect.

Xu Keke also regretted not bringing Du Yi along. That guy might have a sharp tongue, but it was better than nothing; even a few insults could have helped relieve her boredom.

Fortunately, workers from the workshop soon came to collect the materials, breaking the awkward silence between the two.

Xu Keke witnessed a very strange scene. The people in the workshop first poked their heads in and greeted the two of them.

"Old Wei, what are we getting today?" Master Liao asked proactively, seemingly to show that he was very responsible.

The craftsman, Lao Wei, was clearly taken aback, but quickly replied, "What else can we take? We need to cut leather, a few brown cowhides."

"Okay, go in and get it. Don't make a mess of it."

Master Liao dutifully gave a brief instruction without even lifting his head. Not long after, Master Wei went out carrying a large bundle of brown leather.

"Isn't this recorded in the books?" Xu Keke asked Master Liao in great shock and confusion.

Master Liao picked up the thermos on the table, as if recalling something from a long time ago. "I remember back in the early days after Liberation, I had to put my fingerprint on the box when I came to collect materials. Later, those people said that this meant they didn't trust their own comrades. The person who used to manage the warehouse had a bad family background, so they transferred me over. I can't read a single word. I can check the goods and see if the leather is good or bad, but I don't know anything about accounting."

"The water's boiled, I'll go get some," Master Liao kindly reminded Xu Keke, noticing she hadn't brought a cup.

"Master Zeng, your cup is still in the workshop, right? Go get it in a bit. No one needs to watch over it. They all know where their things are."

Now Xu Keke understood why they had sent Du Yi, that jerk, to the warehouse. It was the same job as the gatekeeper at the factory entrance.

Du Yi finally walked in, limping, and looked at Xu Keke with an unfriendly gaze.

Xu Keke asked him, "Did you know that Lin Meijia also went to study?"

Du Yi, leaning on his cane, glanced at her sideways. "I know, so what? Her mother is the manager of a department store; she got in touch with the higher-ups herself."
