Chapter Six: High School Female Teachers in the 1980s

Xu Keke walked into the hospital's registration desk and, through the crowd, immediately spotted the four members of the Li family standing expressionlessly in the queue.

This family has been making a scene since early morning, and they haven't even had a sip of water, let alone eaten. They all look listless. Even Li Shaojie, a handsome young man who would stand out in a crowd, looks dejected. The few red marks on his face are more noticeable than him.

Although the village was short of food and clothing even in the most difficult times, fortunately, Li Guodong was the village's accountant. The Li family had never experienced such hunger since they opened their eyes.

Li Yumei stared longingly at the seven or eight-year-old boy in front of her, holding a paper package that looked like bread. He took a big bite, his mouth smeared with strawberry-colored jam. Li Yumei couldn't help but swallow.

She looked away and saw Xu Keke. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she pointed at Xu Keke, "She...she's back."

When Xu Keke and San'er approached, Li Yumei's eyes widened. "Where's breakfast? Didn't you go to buy breakfast?"

The three members of the Li family were also sizing her up. Aside from a black briefcase held in one hand to her chest, Xu Keke carried nothing. The third brother, following behind her with his hands in his jeans pockets and wearing sunglasses, was also empty-handed.

Unwilling to give up, Lu Cuihua asked again, "Tingting, um, where's the breakfast you bought?"

Xu Keke, who was looking at the front of the line, seemed to have just heard it and turned around to ask, "You guys haven't eaten?"

Seeing her nonchalant attitude, Li Shaojie was furious. "What were you doing just now?"

His questioning tone displeased Xu Keke. She glared at him and retorted irritably, "Didn't I tell you? I asked Third Brother to take me to breakfast!"

"Then you didn't bring any back for us either?" Li Shaojie asked incredulously.

"Bring it back?" Xu Keke looked at him in shock, her eyes seeming to say, "Li Shaojie, are you an idiot?" "We ate steamed buns, and those things have such a strong smell, how can we eat them in the hospital? Even if I buy other food, where are you going to eat? It's windy outside, we can't just eat here, can we? In this environment, can you even eat?"

The four members of the Li family were speechless. They couldn't eat. Who said they couldn't eat?

Li Yumei looked at the child who had just been eating bread, but unfortunately the child had already finished.

"Alright, alright," seeing that the two were about to clash again, Li Guodong pulled his son aside and said to Xu Keke, "Let's not talk about food for now. Tingting, do you think we should ask someone for help? We can't just keep waiting in line here. Look, there are still quite a few people ahead of us."

"Why do we need to find someone?" Xu Keke looked back at him in confusion. "Everyone here is here for medical treatment, and many of them are much sicker than Li Shaojie. They can all wait in line. He only has such a minor injury, and it's not even an emergency. Why do we need to make an exception for him? If my dad finds out, he'll definitely scold him to death."

The people queuing here are either there to see a doctor or are family members of patients. Xu Keke's words drew approving glances from the people around her.

Li Guodong stared blankly for a long time, then said, "Fine, I'll just pretend I didn't say anything."

Xu Keke hadn't really planned to queue with them and was looking around, trying to find an excuse to leave. Then she spotted a familiar figure – it was like a godsend!

"Sister Yujie!" Seeing that she had heard her and was turning around to look for her, Xu Keke quickly waved.

Li Shaojie also saw the person and was startled. He hurriedly pulled her away, saying, "Don't call out. It's okay if you didn't see the person."

"Didn't your dad say to look for someone? This is perfect!" Xu Keke shook off his hand and continued to call out to Xiao Yujie, who was wearing a white coat and had slowed down to look back, "Sister Yujie, over here!"

Seeing that it was them, Xiao Yujie hurried over. Even though Xu Keke had called her, she didn't look at Xu Keke standing in front of them, but went straight to Li Shaojie.

"Shaojie, what happened to your face?"

Li Shaojie awkwardly turned his face away, inwardly blaming Xu Keke for meddling. He raised his hand to block Xiao Yujie's outstretched hand, "It's nothing..."

Seeing out of the corner of his eye that Xu Keke was about to open her mouth again, Li Shaojie dared not be vague any longer and quickly said, "My mom was sweeping the floor and didn't notice that she hit my face."

After carefully examining Li Shaojie's injuries and finding nothing seriously wrong, Xiao Yujie finally had time to greet the Li family members.

"Why don't you just go in? Why are you still queuing here?" Xiao Yujie asked softly.

Li Shaojie's smile was somewhat unnatural. "It's not a serious injury, we should still follow the rules. Besides, there aren't many people ahead of us."

After saying this, Li Shaojie glanced nervously at Xu Keke, only to see that she not only didn't move forward, but actually took a half step back. She stood nonchalantly to the side with her arms crossed, showing no intention of joining their conversation. Only then did he feel relieved.

"Shaojie, you're just too honest." Xiao Yujie gave him a reproachful look, then complained to Li Guodong and Lu Cuihua, "Uncle and Aunt, you don't know. Shaojie was like this back in school. He was too honest and always followed the rules. He suffered a lot because of it."

Xu Keke was still standing there, so Li Guodong and Lu Cuihua didn't dare to respond to her words and could only smile along.

"Shaojie, this must be your sister. She's really pretty." Looking at Li Yumei standing right next to Li Shaojie, Xiao Yujie affectionately took her hand. "I saw you yesterday, but there were too many people, so I didn't have a chance to talk to you. Your brother and I are classmates, so you can just call me Sister Yujie."

Looking at Li Shaojie, Li Yumei shyly called out, "Sister Yujie."
