Chapter Sixty-Six: Rural Female Cadres Who Came to the City in the 1950s (5)

Liu Wenda pulled Zhou Chengguang out, glanced at Liao Meng who was turning to walk next door, and was about to call him back when Chen Yufen, who had followed, interrupted him.

"Let's go to our place for a while."

This is actually a guesthouse for the military to temporarily house the families of the soldiers. The real family compound is next door, separated from this side by half a wall.

Zhou Chengguang often visited Liu Wenda's home. He hadn't noticed anything unusual before, but today, seeing the fully furnished apartment the logistics department had provided for Liu Wenda, and recalling the room he'd just left—which contained only a table and a stool—he wondered how Liu's mother usually ate. But thinking of that naan bread, he figured she'd probably just sit on the bed and eat a couple of bites and be full.

Zhou Chengguang felt somewhat uneasy.

"This was specially sent by a relative of Company Commander Wu's wife from the south. Try it and see if it tastes good. She originally wanted to send it to you, but I didn't let her, because I was afraid it wouldn't look good if people saw it."

Chen Yufen handed Zhou Chengguang a teacup. Zhou Chengguang opened the lid, sniffed, and a rich aroma of jasmine tea wafted out; it smelled wonderful.

"Don't make decisions for Lao Zhou unless it's absolutely necessary." Liu Wenda had been drinking this for the past few days and didn't feel anything was wrong with it anymore. He picked up the cup and used the lid to skim the tea leaves floating on the surface.

"You're just saying useless things. If he had a proper wife to keep him in check, I wouldn't have to worry about all this." Chen Yufen gave him a playful glare. "Yu Rong is more attentive than me. She's a nurse and knows how to take care of people. If she were here, I could save myself a lot of trouble."

Upon hearing her mention Chen Yurong, Zhou Chengguang couldn't help but smile. Seeing this, Liu Wenda and Chen Yufen exchanged a knowing smile.

Zhou Chengguang picked up the teacup, brought it to his lips, took a big gulp, and then spat the tea leaves back into the cup with a "Ptooey! Ptooey!" Chen Yufen frowned and gave him a disgusted look. Luckily, Yu Rong wasn't there, otherwise she would definitely have made a scene.

Chen Yufen glanced at Liu Wenda with a troubled expression, gesturing for him to look at Zhou Chengguang; even in the dragon robe, he didn't look like a prince. Liu Wenda shook his head reassuringly, telling her not to worry about it.

One of his classmates works as a secretary to a military leader, and he's already heard that Zhou Chengguang is very likely to be promoted this year. This time, the position he's in certainly won't be low.

These women only care about useless things. If he were really going to get promoted, if he were Zhou Chengguang, he would have just found someone in the army. Who would still find a nurse in the countryside who acts like a rich young lady every day, thinking she's so precious? Actually, her family sells porcelain. If it weren't for the quick liberation, her family would have gone bankrupt long ago.

"I'll go directly to Feng Lichun to talk about the divorce later, let's not beat around the bush anymore."

Although Zhou Chengguang didn't say it explicitly, Liu Wenda and his wife could tell from his dissatisfaction.

“Yu Fen, I’m not trying to criticize you, but you went too far in handling this matter today. You didn’t even understand the situation yourselves before calling me and Lao Zhou over. What were you expecting us to say? Also, you had someone make things difficult for Feng Lichun so that she would resign voluntarily, which is true! But you didn’t consider things carefully. You forgot, Lao Zhou’s mother was also there. She’s so old, and Lao Zhou has never been around to help her. It’s so heartbreaking that she finally came.

"You have no idea, Old Zhou is the most filial son."

While Zhou Chengguang was drinking water, Chen Yufen pouted at Liu Wenda unhappily, but still said, "Yes, I didn't think this through at first. How about this, I'll have Yurong accompany me to buy some fabric, make a few clothes for the old lady, and then take her out to eat at a restaurant."

Zhou Chengguang's eyes lit up. "Would Yu Rong agree to this? Or maybe we should just forget about it. My mother has never been to the city before. She doesn't know the city's customs, and..."

"What are you saying? Yu Rong is a nurse. Our family is so rich, why would we let Yu Rong become a nurse? It's because she's the kindest girl. She's soft-hearted and kind to everyone. Especially the elderly and children, she takes such good care of them. She told me the other day that having an elder in the family is like having a treasure. If it weren't for the concern that your mother wouldn't be used to living in the city, she would really hope to live with your mother after getting married."

"Really!" Zhou Chengguang looked at Chen Yufen in disbelief.

In the few times he spent with Chen Yurong, he always felt that she treated him indifferently. Liu Wenda said that the girl was just shy and that she was only like that because she liked him. But he wasn't a complete novice; he knew what it was like for a woman to like a man. Even if city people and country people were very different, the difference couldn't be this drastic.

Now, hearing Chen Yufen say that Yu Rong wanted to live with her mother, he truly believed Liu Wenda's words. Chen Yu Rong really thought highly of herself. You see, Liu Wenda's parents lived in the county town, and Chen Yufen didn't even want to live with them.

Seeing the look in Zhou Chengguang's eyes, Chen Yufen suddenly realized she might have said too much. She turned to look at Liu Wenda, wanting to confirm her point, but to her surprise, Liu Wenda wholeheartedly agreed, nodding repeatedly.

"Then let's do it your way and not delay any longer, let's do it tomorrow. You and Yu Rong can take our mother out for a stroll. What do you say, Lao Zhou?"

Zhou Chengguang had no objections whatsoever. If it weren't for Feng Lichun, he would have introduced Chen Yurong to his mother long ago. He was his father's posthumous child, and his mother had raised him with great difficulty. Now that he was an official, he wanted to show his mother that he had even married a beautiful wife in the city. His mother would definitely be happy for him.

Liu Wenda and Zhou Chengguang were happy, but no one noticed how forced Chen Yurong's smile was.

“Old Zhou, you’re right. When we fight, we’re all about being steady, accurate, and ruthless. You can’t delay any longer. Go find Feng Lichun tonight. Talk to her and get her to agree to a divorce. I don’t believe it. It’s written here that marriage is a matter of freedom. You two have no feelings for each other anymore. Who can force you two to stay together?”
