Chapter Twenty-Three: High School Female Teachers in the 1980s

Fang Minghui performed a simple examination on Lu Cuihua and, as if treating any other patient's family member, said to them, "It should be a femoral neck fracture. It's hard to say exactly how bad the injury is right now. Let's get some X-rays taken first."

Lu Cuihua was in so much pain that she couldn't sit up, so Xiao Yujie pulled Li Shaojie out to find a stretcher.

The young girl I'd seen at the hospital entrance that day also went inside. Seeing them, she stepped back a few paces. Only after they went in did she follow them into the examination room.

He glanced at Lu Cuihua, who was lying on the hospital bed groaning in pain, and felt a pang of pity in his eyes. He subconsciously took a step back.

"Why are you back again?" Fang Minghui stood up to greet her, shielding the girl with his body. The surgical emergency room was often covered in blood, and he didn't want to frighten her.

The girl was short, and looked up at him with a charming expression. She whispered, "My mom made dumplings today, with a three-delicacy filling. I specially rode my bike to bring them to you."

Seeing that Fang Minghui was about to say something, she pouted and said unhappily, "I won't delay your work. I just came to tell you that I left the dumplings at the nurses' station. I'll be leaving now."

"No, I mean I can leave for ten minutes now. So you need to eat quickly. Haven't you eaten yet either?" Fang Minghui looked at the girl with doting eyes.

"I brought it to you as soon as it came out of the pot. I was afraid you'd eat more." The girl nodded shyly, a hint of pride showing in her bright eyes, pleased with herself for being so thoughtful.

They spoke discreetly, avoiding the patient, and stood at the other end of the table beside the middle-aged female doctor. The doctor, without looking up, stared at the medical records in her hand and said with a stern face,

"Go eat, you should have gone to eat earlier."

Lu Cuihua needs to film now, and this is the most suitable time for him to eat.

Xiao Yujie stood to the side, watching the two people who only had eyes for each other and smiled. She was momentarily stunned.

She only realized now that Fang Minghui wasn't ugly at all. He was wearing a doctor's cap that completely obscured his hair, and he was only twenty-seven years old. He was tall and slender, with a calm and refined demeanor. Standing next to the pretty girl, the two of them, one still and one moving, were surprisingly well-matched.

Li Shaojie and Li Guodong were lifting Lu Cuihua onto a stretcher when they looked up and saw Xiao Yujie staring blankly at Fang Minghui, seemingly lost in thought.

Li Shaojie snorted and called out to Li Yumei, "Yumei, come over and help me hold her up."

Xiao Yujie finally came to her senses and was about to reach out when Li Yumei bumped into her and pushed her aside. Xiao Yujie didn't even have time to argue with Li Yumei; she immediately turned to look at Fang Minghui.

But Fang Minghui didn't even glance at her. He was intently watching his girlfriend, listening to her soft, excited chatter, a handsome smile curving his lips. The two walked out side by side.

At that moment, Xiao Yujie's eyes instantly reddened, and she almost cried out of grievance.

The three members of the Li family carried the stretcher out. The female doctor sitting beside her watched her expressionlessly. Xiao Yujie's eyes met hers, and as if her thoughts had been read, she hurriedly ran out.

Lu Cuihua's fall was quite serious. The X-ray showed a comminuted fracture of the femoral neck.

Li Shaojie sat dejectedly on a stool in front of the hospital bed, his face gloomy. Li Yumei busied herself beside him, pouring water and tucking Lu Cuihua in with a blanket. She was quite busy.

Xiao Yujie wanted to go back and rest first, but seeing the family like this, she didn't say anything. She stood behind Li Shaojie, looking out the window.

Li Guodong squatted in the corner with a sigh, feeling suffocated. He got up, wanting to go out for another smoke.

Lu Cuihua, who was lying in the hospital bed, stopped him, saying, "Dad, I'm not in much pain anymore. Let's take care of me at home."

Li Guodong looked at his wife, then at his son, sighed deeply, and squatted down with a sorrowful expression.

"Actually, why don't we ask Professor Du to take a look?" Xiao Yujie said, her voice so hoarse it startled her. She then realized that she hadn't even had a sip of water since she got off work.

Upon hearing this, Li Guodong jumped to his feet, his eyes filled with hope as he looked at Xiao Yujie.

“Professor Du performed a total hip replacement surgery on the patient. In our city, only Professor Du can perform this surgery. The patient can get out of bed and walk around two to three weeks after the operation. After about six months of recovery, he can move around freely,” Xiao Yujie said, clearing her throat.

This was something her teacher told them in class when she was in college. She still remembers the proud look on her teacher's face, as if the surgery wasn't performed by Professor Du, but by him.

The doctor just said that his wife might be paralyzed from the fall. Even if she can't move freely, being able to walk with crutches would be good. Li Guodong looked at his son, "Shaojie?"

Li Shaojie hadn't needed Xiao Yujie to say it; he'd already thought of it when he got the film. Du Junsheng was his teacher; did she really need to tell him these things?

But this was precisely what troubled him: how to bring it up. Even if he weren't Du Junsheng's son-in-law, but just his student, a regular colleague, or even someone he'd only met once, he would dare approach Du Junsheng. Knowing Du Junsheng's character, he wouldn't ignore it. But now, Li Shaojie sighed with deep melancholy.

Xu Keke learned two days later that Lu Cuihua might become paralyzed. Fang Minghui brought his girlfriend to the Du family's house for a meal.

"Senior, I know your parents went to the countryside for a census, but you could have gone to your girlfriend's house instead. Why are you coming to our house to freeload again? It was one thing if it was just you before, but now there are two of you."

Knowing that Xu Keke was joking, Fang Minghui's girlfriend hid behind him and chuckled.

After dinner, the group sat in the living room.

“I went back to the college today, and they told me that you went there a couple of days ago. Were you looking for Li Shaojie to get a divorce certificate?” As soon as Du Junsheng said this, even Lin Munan, who was peeling an apple, stopped and looked at her daughter.
