Year of the King Leading Type Daddy x Willful Young Girl
"Will you be my daddy?"
During the summe...
Chapter 13 Today is a good day to get married during the rainy season.
At seven o'clock on Friday morning, Lin Fei picked up Chi Xin downstairs in the community. She brought two large boxes into the door, and she could hardly see the road under her feet.
"What did you bring?" Lin Fei was wide awake.
Chi Xin said, "These are new clothes that Grandma gave you; she knitted them herself."
Lin Fei hurriedly opened the box, and what came into view was a bright red Zhuang brocade with an octagonal pattern. Gently stroking the soft silk threads, she could feel the slightly raised pattern. She pouted and said, "Grandma could have just used scraps to make it for me, or even just a small piece for the collar. The whole cheongsam is made of Zhuang brocade, I don't even dare to wear it."
Zhuang brocade, hand-woven by hand, is considered a luxury item among intangible cultural heritage because it is difficult to weave and takes a long time. It involves fifteen processes and takes at least a month to weave a piece of cloth that is one meter long and half a meter wide. The grandmother takes even longer to weave the cloth. She starts by raising silkworms and even twists and dyes the silk threads herself.
This simple octagonal patterned wavy-sleeved cheongsam with a curved front took at least six months to make.
“Grandma planned to give you a Zhuang brocade wedding dress ever since you came of age. She said it was a tradition, but we young people definitely didn’t like the old-fashioned brightly colored fabrics, so Grandma redesigned the color scheme according to our preferences. You have one, and I have one too, so you have to accept it, otherwise I’ll be too embarrassed to take it later.” Chi Xin lifted the cheongsam to reveal a black men’s suit with the same pattern underneath. “Dr. Liang also has one; you’ll wear this for the photoshoot today.”
Lin Fei felt his eyes getting a little hot, and closed the box: "Dr. Liang is really lucky to have received a set of clothes from the master craftsman."
"Hurry upstairs, try them on and see if they fit." Chi Xin was curious about the effect of wearing them.
Zhong Shuwen hadn't returned from her night shift yet, so Lin Fei, unconcerned about being bumped into, led Chi Xin directly to Liang Yanzhe's house.
Liang Yanzhe opened the door, and what came into view was a dark gray loungewear outfit, and the person looked like they had just gotten up.
Lin Fei took out a black long robe, shook it, and held it up against Liang Yanzhe: "Grandma's eyes are rulers? They fit perfectly."
Liang Yanzhe was still unaware of the situation, so Lin Fei explained that it was a wedding dress that his grandmother had given them.
"No wonder Grandma wanted to take my measurements in the knitting room last night." Liang Yanzhe thought it was just a whim of the old lady, but he didn't expect that she had specially made new clothes for me.
Chi Xin said, "Grandma stayed up half the night last night to fix it; Dr. Liang's shoulders are too broad."
Women's cheongsams fit perfectly to the curves, while men's long gowns are made with extra room; as long as the shoulders fit well, there are no other problems.
Chi Xin, seeing that it was almost time to meet Aunt Gui, urged the two of them to change their clothes.
Lin Fei thought it would make her look old-fashioned, but Grandma cleverly used the color scheme. From a distance, it looked like a bright red, but upon closer inspection, one could see that a lighter red thread was used when weaving the pattern, creating a simple yet elaborate beauty.
She spun around in front of the mirror twice, thankful that she had successfully lost weight six months ago, otherwise she might not have been able to fit into this cheongsam.
Upon going outside, I saw Liang Yanzhe, who had changed into a long gown. He happened to be wearing gold-rimmed glasses, looking like a young master who had returned from studying abroad during the Republic of China era.
"How is it?" He opened his hand.
Lin Fei misunderstood his intention, stepped forward, grabbed his sleeve, and spun him around twice: "So handsome!"
"Cough cough cough, I'm still here," Chi Xin reminded him. "We need to head out quickly, Aunt Gui is still waiting for us."
Having made an appointment at the Civil Affairs Bureau in the afternoon, and needing to have their ID photos taken in the morning, the three of them headed to Chunxi Old Street without daring to delay any longer.
Lin Fei wore light makeup on the way, and her hair was styled by Chi Xin, simply tied into a low bun to match the cheongsam.
The old street in Chunxi is exceptionally quiet in the morning. Because it is close to the suburbs, the air is fresh, and you can hear the melodious chirping of birds.
Aunt Gui was waiting at the door early in the morning. When she saw them, a smile appeared on her face: "You must be the Lin family's son-in-law. What a handsome young man you are!"
Liang Yanzhe paused for a moment, then smiled and said, "Yes, thank you for your help, Aunt Gui."
Lin Fei and Liang Yanzhe took their seats and, while they were setting up the scene, said, "Although Aunt Gui's photo studio is doing poorly, her house is very lively. People like to come over to chat after dinner."
Liang Yanzhe was puzzled.
"You'll be famous throughout our old street tonight. In Chunxi, there are no secrets." Lin Fei sighed inwardly. It seemed that Liang Yanzhe was unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
Liang Yanzhe laughed: "Then I'm officially a member of your group now. Can you take me for a stroll through the old street next time?"
Lin Fei coughed awkwardly. He realized that she had noticed he didn't want to take him and Zhong Shuwen to stroll through the old street.
"Alright, look over here, let's take a few sets of ID photos first." Aunt Gui looked the newlyweds over the camera, nodding in satisfaction again and again. The man was handsome and the woman was beautiful, they were a feast for the eyes.
Aunt Gui showed them several sets of photos; none of them needed retouching and could be printed directly.
“It’s rare to see you all dressed in these Republic-era clothes. I have an old camera, would you like to take a couple of pictures?” Aunt Gui said. “But I can’t develop them for you right away because the photos are developed using the old-fashioned method and need to be done in a darkroom.”
Lin Fei became interested and turned his expectant gaze toward Liang Yanzhe.
He said, "I'm fine."
“We’ll take the photos! Thank you so much, Aunt Gui.” Lin Fei added, “We’ll have our engagement banquet in a while, and you can send the photos over then, Aunt Gui.”
"Then consider this set of photos my gift to you." Aunt Gui called over Chi Xin to help assemble the old man.
Around 11 a.m., they came out of the photo studio with their marriage certificate photos.
Lin Fei grabbed Chi Xin and said, "Find a few places and take a set of photos for me."
"Today?" Chi Xin asked.
Lin Fei stood at the entrance of the photo studio: "Don't you have quite a few followers on your social media accounts? Your photography mentor is Aunt Gui, aren't you going to promote her?"
"Is it... useful?" Chi Xin asked blankly. She only used her social media account to post some works as a form of sharing, and she didn't know if it would have any effect on promotion.
Lin Fei also pulled Liang Yanzhe over: "I don't know either, but we should do what we can."
The former owner of this photo studio was Aunt Gui's father, and it's considered an old shop on Chunxi Old Street. It has captured important moments in the lives of many people on this street. If possible, she hopes the photo studio can stay open for a long time.
Chi Xin raised his camera, his hand trembling slightly as he focused. But then, remembering Lin Fei's words, "Do what you can," he pressed the shutter button again with a newfound resolve.
Liang Yanzhe understood Lin Fei's feelings and didn't rush her, spending two hours with them taking pictures.
It seems like getting the marriage certificate today is just a secondary task.
-
At 4:30 p.m., Liang Yanzhe and Lin Fei went to the Civil Affairs Bureau where they had made an appointment to get their marriage certificate.
Liang Yanzhe quickly finished writing and waited for Lin Fei to fill out the form. He paused slightly when he saw her name: "Lin...Shufei?"
"Before I was ten, my name was Lin Fei. Later, at my maternal grandfather's suggestion, my father changed my name to Lin Shufei, the same generation name as the Zhong siblings, with the character 'shu' in it. I don't know what the intention was. Maybe my father wanted to please my maternal grandfather," Lin Fei said nonchalantly. "However, I always refer to myself as Lin Fei in public. I only fill in Lin Shufei when I need my real personal information."
Liang Yanzhe noticed Lin Fei's dissatisfaction when he talked about this matter and joked, "You really do have a three-character name, you're not lying to me."
“Dr. Liang,” Lin Fei sat up straight, “I’ve noticed that you’re not as easy to talk to as you seem. You keep a very clear record of everything in your mind, don’t you?”
Liang Yanzhe smiled calmly: "It's our turn, let's go."
Lin Fei made a face at Liang Yanzhe's back, thinking, "Why is this guy so annoying!"
The certificate was obtained quickly, and the two went to a nearby shopping mall to choose wedding rings.
Last night at the dinner table, Lin Fei suggested holding an engagement banquet at the end of the month, in Chunxi Old Street, to have a meal with relatives, and that the wedding would be put on hold for the time being.
Liang Yanzhe wasn't familiar with the local customs, so Lin Fei explained to her, "In Jiangdu, we can hold a wedding banquet a few years after the wedding. Before that, we can have an engagement banquet to inform our relatives of our good news. Originally, I didn't want to have one, but how many times can one get married in a lifetime? I want to have one happily and grandly to make Grandma proud."
"How many times can one get married in a lifetime?" Liang Yanzhe raised an eyebrow.
Lin Fei blurted out the wrong thing in a moment of carelessness, then forced a bright smile at him: "I was just exaggerating, Dr. Liang, please don't write it down in your little notebook."
“Let’s find a planning company in a couple of days.” Liang Yanzhe took the chosen women’s ring and put it on her finger. “Do you want to buy some hardware? We can put it next to the marriage certificate on the engagement day to make Grandma and you proud.”
Her forced smile turned into a genuine one, and she said, "Dr. Liang, you truly are the best son-in-law."
Even knowing that her original intention in wanting to hold an engagement banquet was to bring honor to her grandmother, she was still willing to follow her wishes.
Lin Fei only talked about it; she didn't buy any gold, and she doesn't have the habit of wearing jewelry. She has to wear her wedding ring, and she's already trying to get used to it.
She also made a new discovery. She used to feel that Liang Yanzhe was missing something, but now when she saw the plain wedding ring on his left ring finger, she felt that it was just right and he looked like a perfect husband.
"When are you planning to move to my place?" Liang Yanzhe asked between traffic lights.
"Huh?" Lin Fei hadn't thought about that. "Hmm... in a while?"
Moving out of Zhong Shuwen's place was easy; she could just move to the opposite side. However, she was afraid that Zhong Shuwen would lose her temper.
Liang Yanzhe looked at her seriously: "I have no intention of having a marriage in name only."
"I...I'll tell my cousin this weekend." Lin Fei turned her face away to look at the night view outside the car window, trying to hide the blush that appeared on her face.
As they approached the underground parking lot of the residential complex, Liang Yanzhe said, "If you feel uncomfortable, I can do it for you."
Lin Fei: "Are you sure? My cousin..." He doesn't even call you "elder brother" anymore, he just calls you "Liang Sheng" all the time.
She didn't dare say what came next.
"We've already got the marriage certificate, he can't possibly ask us to get a divorce."
"If you file for divorce, there is a 30-day cooling-off period, and I will choose to refuse."
Liang Yanzhe joked in a serious tone, and Lin Fei found it inexplicably funny, bursting out laughing.
"Funny?" He didn't realize he had the skill of telling jokes.
Lin Fei shook his head and then nodded: "It's not funny, it's funny the way you say it."
"Thank you for coming." He didn't understand, but her smile was enough.
Lin Fei stole a few glances at Liang Yanzhe, then rolled down the car window, the wind blowing on her face feeling exceptionally pleasant.
It felt like their relationship had returned to how natural it was when she was still staying at his house. I thought this was a good sign.
Arrived at the residential area at 10:30.
Lin Fei unbuckled her seatbelt, and the instant Liang Yanzhe's seatbelt came off, she leaned over and hugged his neck, saying, "Dr. Liang, don't worry, I won't abandon you after starting something."
"Is this how the word is used?" Liang Yanzhe looked down at the woman in his arms who was smiling brightly, and the corners of his lips unconsciously curled up.
The thumping sound from the car window interrupted the two, and they both turned to look.
Upon seeing Zhong Shuwen's entire face pressed against the driver's side window, Lin Fei was so frightened that she buried herself in Liang Yanzhe's arms and turned her face away as if to cover it up.
Zhong Shuwen gritted her teeth and said, "Lin—Shu—Fei, don't think I didn't see you!"
