"Will you be my daddy?"
During the summe...
Chapter 14 Rainy Season "Not sleeping in the master bedroom, the games I want to play can still be..."
Zhong Shuwen pounded on the window with his knuckles in frustration: "Hey, you surnamed Liang, roll down your window!"
Now that's settled, they don't call him Liang Sheng anymore, they just call him by his surname Liang.
It was clear that the fire on his head was three feet high.
Liang Yanzhe first consulted Lin Fei, who was in his arms: "Should we open the car window?"
"If it opens, I feel like we're destined to be a star-crossed couple."
Outside, there are those who try to break up a loving couple.
Liang Yanzhe chuckled and patted her head: "Don't say that later, or he'll get even angrier." Lin Fei pouted, realizing Liang Yanzhe had predicted her. She was planning to argue with Zhong Shuwen to the bitter end after getting off the car. She wasn't good at gentle persuasion; being tough was her forte.
Zhong Shuwen pressed his face against the car window again, trying to see what was happening inside through the privacy film. He then leaned half his body out from behind the car to look through the front window.
I wish I hadn't watched it, because after watching it I almost fainted on the spot. The two of them held hands the whole time.
"Lin Shufei, get out of the car!" Zhong Shuwen's neck turned red with anger, and she looked around as if searching for tools to break the window.
Lin Fei dared not delay any longer, fearing that making a commotion would cause the security guards to call the police, so he quickly let go of Liang Yanzhe, pushed open the door, and got out of the car.
"Don't move!" Zhong Shuwen warned sternly.
Lin Fei stood still, hands outstretched: "Young Master, you speak, I'm listening."
Her attitude only fueled the fire, and Zhong Shuwen's chest heaved frequently.
Liang Yanzhe also got out of the car, but before he could speak, he received a fierce glare from Zhong Shuwen.
He walked over and pulled Lin Fei upstairs first.
Liang Yanzhe tried to follow, but Lin Fei waved him away, telling him not to come any closer; she could handle it.
Throughout the entire elevator ride home, Zhong Shuwen remained silent, her breathing growing heavier with each step.
Once inside, he turned around and abruptly demanded, "Lin Fei, don't you have anything to explain? You didn't say a word the whole way home, what does that mean?"
"I'm not saying this because you're angry; I'm afraid you'll get even angrier if I tell you," Lin Fei said sincerely.
Zhong Shuwen was indeed even angrier, and almost passed out from choking.
"Lin Fei, this is a major life event like marriage. You could tell your grandfather, who's all the way to Hong Kong, but you couldn't even tell me? If Shuyu hadn't told me, I would still be completely in the dark." Zhong Shuwen paced back and forth in the house, loudly accusing, "Grandpa is so muddle-headed. They came to our house to propose on Monday, and they only told me today. They even asked me to attend your engagement banquet in a while. Is everyone wary of me?!"
"Brother, Liang Sheng and I didn't tell Grandpa we were keeping it from you. Shouldn't he look for the reason why he didn't tell you right away?" Lin Fei realized he had said the wrong thing after he finished speaking.
Zhong Shuwen went straight back to her study and slammed the door shut.
The living room fell silent.
Lin Fei sat in the living room wringing her fingers. She wasn't good at handling direct conflicts between relatives and had always managed to avoid them before they escalated.
On her phone, Liang Yanzhe sent a message asking how she was doing and if she needed any help.
Lin Fei responded with an OK sign.
The actual situation... is very tricky.
Lin Fei was straightforward and felt that idling on was not a solution. After sitting for nearly half an hour, she thought that Zhong Shuwen should have caught her breath by now. She went to the outside of the study and knocked on the door.
No response.
She knocked again.
There was still no response.
“Brother, sulking won’t solve anything. Come out and let’s discuss a solution,” Lin Fei said. “Let’s tell each other what we need.”
Zhong Shuwen opened the door, glaring at Lin Fei, her eyes bloodshot: "Lin Shufei, is this how you try to make peace with people? I'm your brother, not your client at the company. I'm angry because you and Grandpa didn't consult me on important matters. Are you made of wood? Can't you say something nice?"
"If I told you, would you agree?" Lin Fei asked him.
Zhong Shuwen opened her mouth and then closed it again.
He definitely won't agree.
"That shouldn't have been done without prior consultation."
“Brother, if it weren’t for Liang Sheng’s insistence on maintaining proper etiquette, I wouldn’t have even mentioned it to Grandpa. From my perspective, it’s simple: I know you care about me, so I’ve never taken my disagreements with Grandpa out on you, and I respect you as my brother. But when it comes to such a major life decision, I want to follow my own heart.” Lin Fei’s speech slowed down. “I don’t want anyone to interfere, otherwise, if I regret the marriage you arranged for me someday, I’m afraid I’ll blame Grandpa. He’s not exactly a person of high moral character, and he might even take it out on you.”
Zhong Shuwen pursed her lips, her voice sounding as if it carried a thousand pounds of weight.
Her maternal relatives had never appeared in her life before she turned sixteen, had never accompanied her as she grew up, and had never offered any help. They suddenly barged into her world, wanting her to be bound to them for the rest of her life and to obey their arrangements. He, too, would have been unable to accept that.
Lin Fei was right; she was already trying her best not to escalate the conflict.
"What's the next step?" Zhong Shuwen asked, changing his tone.
Lin Fei smiled again, as if their previous standoff had never happened. She said, "Liang Sheng and Grandpa have talked about it. They're not planning to have a wedding for now. They'll have an engagement banquet at the end of the month in Chunxi Old Street, where relatives and friends can have a meal together."
"Okay, you don't need to worry, I'll take care of it." Zhong Shuwen urged Lin Fei, "Go back to your room quickly to wash up and rest."
Lin Fei wanted to bring up the matter of leaving, but before he could speak, he received a glare from Zhong Shuwen.
"You'd better not mention anything today. I've only just calmed down, so you'd better go along with me." He pointed to Lin Fei's room. "Go back."
She dared not speak again and obediently went back to her room.
After closing the door, Lin Fei sent a WeChat message to Liang Yanzhe.
Lin Fei: [My cousin is stable for now, but the matter of him moving out needs to be discussed later.]
Lin Fei: [Dr. Liang, what should we do?]
Liang Yanzhe replied quickly: [It's getting late, you should rest tonight and move tomorrow.]
Since Liang Yanzhe said he could move tomorrow, I have complete faith that he can find a solution.
After Lin Fei fell asleep, Zhong Shuwen came out of the study and knocked on the door opposite.
Liang Yanzhe had changed into his pajamas, still damp from his shower.
Zhong Shuwen glanced at himself; he was still wearing a white shirt and dress pants, looking every bit the part of a student.
That's great! He didn't shower, and he's been upset about it ever since he got home.
Zhong Shuwen glanced at the cat at Liang Yanzhe's feet and scoffed, "So you've even started keeping cats now?"
“Feiwen likes it.” Liang Yanzhe picked up Shunshun from beside his feet and placed it on the cat tree in the corner of the living room. “This cat is a stray she rescued when she was hospitalized.”
"Oh, so you were already flirting with her behind my back while she was in the hospital." Zhong Shuwen was still a little embarrassed about the change in address, but in retrospect, it was his intuition that reminded him that Liang Yanzhe was no good and was secretly flirting with his sister behind his back.
Liang Yanzhe smiled calmly and said, "Even earlier?"
"What do you mean by 'earlier'? Meeting at Chunxi Old Street? Our first meal together?" Zhong Shuwen sat down on the single sofa with his arms crossed. "Don't beat around the bush with me, make things clear."
The outcome is already set in stone, but he still has the right to know.
Liang Yanzhe raised an eyebrow slightly: "You forgot, the summer after she graduated from high school, you let her stay at my house."
Zhong Shuwen: "..."
The outstretched hand ended up hitting his own face, and his heart was bleeding.
The two were silent for half a minute. Shunshun, who was on the cat tree, was restless and very bold. She was curious about Zhong Shuwen, whom she was meeting for the first time. She climbed onto the backrest and sniffed him all over, as if she was performing a special cat ritual to make sure he would not endanger her safety.
Zhong Shuwen turned her head away, dodging Shunshun's probing, and thought to herself that this cat was just as annoying as its owner.
"Isn't your apartment empty? Aren't you living at the Liang family's house?" Zhong Shuwen already had the answer before she asked, but she still asked anyway.
Liang Yanzhe beckoned to Shunshun, and it trotted over with light, nimble steps and sat down next to him.
“How could I possibly live at the Leung family’s house? My return to Hong Kong has already made Ah Yi feel threatened. If I stay at her house again, she might make a move on me. Before you sent her here, I also said that I would stay occasionally.” Leung Yen-chak spoke of the past with nonchalance.
Zhong Shuwen knew that the Liang family had complicated relationships, but he hadn't asked about it specifically, which showed that he was unwilling to talk about it.
Are you sure it's just an occasional occurrence?
"We often work overtime at the hospital, so we don't see each other more than three times a week." Liang Yanzhe wasn't lying, but he omitted some of the truth. If he were on leave at home, they would see each other all day long.
Zhong Shuwen felt there was no point in dwelling on it anymore.
“You’ve already asked your grandma to intervene, and grandpa has agreed. Nothing I say will change your mind. You’re not allowed to bully her. Be careful. I live right across the hall.” He stood up.
“I’ll help her move her luggage tomorrow,” Liang Yanzhe called out to Zhong Shuwen, who was about to slam the door and leave. “If you keep stopping her, she’ll start to overthink things.”
Zhong Shuwen took a deep breath: "I know, she's my sister, it's none of your business to remind me."
Liang Yanzhe patted Shunshun and joked, "See the guest out."
Shunshun actually ran to the door to wait for Zhong Shuwen.
Zhong Shuwen didn't want to stay a moment longer and left quickly.
Shunshun peeked its cat head out through the crack in the door. Liang Yanzhe walked over, squatted down, and patted its little head.
"Wait a little longer, she'll be back tomorrow."
Shunshun tilted its head back and meowed, as if to say it understood.
-
Lin Fei was woken up by a phone call from her senior, Song Mingxu, the next day. She dragged her tired body down to the underground parking lot and yawned several times.
Song Mingxu parked his car next to the apartment building. Seeing Lin Fei, he rolled down the window and said, "Mumu, over here!"
Lin Fei stepped forward and asked, "Senior, didn't we reschedule for next week? Why are you coming to see me earlier?"
"Of course I have good news to share with you. Get in the car." Song Mingxu patted the passenger seat.
Lin Fei hesitated for a few seconds, then got into the car first.
As soon as the car started, Song Mingxu began to talk at length about the 'big thing' he was about to do.
“I started a company that renovates old houses in Chunxi Old Street, and I also opened a guesthouse near the back mountain. It was renovated a few days ago and is airing out. I wanted to show you around.” Song Mingxu didn’t hear her reply and glanced at Lin Fei, who was typing on her phone. “Who are you talking to?”
"I was sleeping soundly when you called me out the door. I didn't even have time to say hello to my family. I have to tell them." Lin Fei left a message for Zhong Shuwen and didn't forget to tell Liang Yanzhe as well.
"Family? Don't you live on Chunxi Old Street?" Song Mingxu asked, puzzled.
Lin Fei put away her phone: "My cousin lives here, and so does my husband."
After saying that, she curled the corners of her lips slightly.
"You... sir? I didn't hear wrong, did I?" Song Mingxu's eyes widened. "When did you get your marriage certificate?"
“Yesterday,” Lin Fei said generously, “but the engagement banquet hasn’t been held yet. It’s scheduled for the end of the month. Would you do me the honor of coming for a meal?”
Song Mingxu: "I will definitely present you with a big gift."
Lin Fei also said, "I'll take this opportunity to get to know my neighbors in Chunxi Old Street."
When doing business in the local area, it's essential to maintain good neighborly relations.
"I knew I'd come to the right person." Song Mingxu was rich, but if he wanted to make a name for himself in the area, he still needed Lin Fei's help.
Lin Fei asked Song Mingxu curiously, "Senior, aren't you enjoying your life of luxury? Why did you choose to start a business in Chunxi Old Street? Besides, the first choice for tourists is Shuitiao Old Street in the city center, and even locals only make a day trip."
There's practically no bed and breakfast business to be done.
“As you know, I studied hotel management, and my family owns a hotel, so I want to achieve something.” Song Mingxu said optimistically. “I have observed that Chunxi Old Street has well-preserved ancient buildings, beautiful mountains and waters, and has development potential.”
Lin Fei's lips twitched.
Okay, Chi Xin was right, he's another rich kid who impulsively started a business.
Song Mingxu's family has been too protective of him, which is why he can say such optimistic things.
Lin Fei visited the guesthouse built by Song Mingxu in Chunxi Old Street.
The location was carefully chosen. An open-air balcony and swimming pool were built on the second floor, offering a wide view and high oxygen content in the air. Standing here makes you feel refreshed.
All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, ensuring good privacy. The windows face lush green mountains, and if it rains during your stay, the atmosphere becomes somber, allowing you to get a good night's sleep.
"What are your plans?" Lin Fei asked, sitting in the swing chair.
Song Mingxu envisioned, "My founding philosophy is to allow busy people to temporarily escape to a paradise to relax during their leisure time. The design of the guesthouse, inside and out, was specially commissioned from a famous hotel designer, and the materials are also the best. After the opening, I will promote it on various platforms, and I will use my home as the channel."
“The idea is good and feasible.” Lin Fei pondered for a moment and explained the pros and cons of the idea. “However, the surrounding facilities are not up to par. Unlike Shuitiao Old Street, Chunxi Old Street has not been fully commercialized and developed. The original residents there are long gone. Most of them are employees of the developers or rent out storefronts to other businesses. Chunxi Old Street cannot replicate the success of Shuitiao Old Street. Their ancestors lived on this land for three generations. Commercialization is simply impossible.”
Song Mingxu looked troubled: "I've thought about the problem you mentioned, and I'm also interested in investing in the development of this area. I've talked to the people in the subdistrict office a few times, but we haven't reached an agreement. That's why I have to ask you to step in. The person in charge of this area is your childhood friend, named... Jiang Hua! We often went to the library together in college."
Lin Fei looked up at the blue sky above, feeling troubled.
The weather is nice today. The sun is completely blocked by clouds, and there are occasional gusts of wind, making it much cooler. It looks like it won't get hot again by the end of the month, and we're officially entering late autumn.
Her gaze fell down to the land beneath her feet.
This is where she grew up, and she wants to make some efforts here.
“The outcome may not be satisfactory, but I will talk to Jiang Hua. What do you think?” Lin Fei decided to act as a bridge and give both sides another chance.
"Mumu, you're the most reliable one," Song Mingxu said with a smile. "Why don't you consider joining my company? The benefits are definitely excellent."
"No thanks, senior. I don't have any grand ambitions," Lin Fei said with a light smile. "Just chatting with me is fine. If I really become your employee, all I'll do is flatter you and agree with whatever you say, which would only harm you."
"I'll always keep a place for you here, you can find me anytime." Song Mingxu was full of confidence in the business he was about to start.
Lin Fei walked to the glass fence and pointed to the orchard not far away. "Senior, you can consider renting this orchard. Guests staying here can experience farm stays. The surrounding facilities are not complete, but it's still a good thing."
"Do you know the owner of this land?" Song Mingxu stood next to her, observing the size of the garden.
“This is the orchard planted by the old man who lives at the end of the street. His family makes money from the income from this orchard, but in recent years, there has been no way to sell the fruit, and a lot of it has rotted in the ground. His son and daughter-in-law can only drive long-distance trucks to supplement their income,” Lin Fei said. “If you really want to develop Chunxi Old Street, it won’t be that easy.”
Song Mingxu's idea was wonderful, but only by truly interacting with the residents and the land did he realize that while the slogan of rural revitalization is easy to shout, it is difficult to implement.
After listening to Lin Fei's words, Song Mingxu fell into deep thought.
-
Lin Fei returned to the neighborhood in the afternoon to move her things. Liang Yanzhe had emergency surgery, so Zhong Shuwen helped her move the things.
"He's already asked for leave, why didn't he ask for leave for the weekend too?" Zhong Shuwen muttered.
Lin Fei packed up the sewing machine and clapped his hands: "I'm the one who asked him to go back to work. It's just moving from across the street, it's not a difficult thing."
"Afei, you're still too independent."
"Or what?" Lin Fei teased him deliberately. "I'm the same as Zhong Shuyu, would you like that?"
Zhong Shuwen didn't even dare to think about it; she just felt overwhelmed.
After moving everything, she called Lalamove to bring back all the things that were temporarily stored in Liang Yanru's empty house.
She didn't have much luggage in Shanghai; after decluttering, she only had two large suitcases: one for clothes and one for daily necessities.
Before Liang Yanzhe went into the operating room, he sent a message to Lin Fei, saying that she could use any room in the house, and the room on the second floor near the balcony was reserved for her as a study.
The house was well-lit, so Lin Fei basked in the sun for a while.
Now I understand why they bought the house across the hall. One reason is the good location, and another is that there were only these two duplexes left in the complex, so they just happened to be there.
After Lin Fei tidied up the study, the two-hour surgery Liang Yanzhe had mentioned had already passed, so she made a phone call.
The call was answered just before the connection was about to be disconnected.
"Dr. Liang." Lin Fei's tone rose slightly when she called Liang Yanzhe.
"Yes, I'm listening." His voice was slightly deep, but one could imagine him responding with a gentle smile.
Lin Fei stood at the door of the master bedroom, hesitated for a few seconds, and then chose to be direct: "Can I sleep in the master bedroom? That depends on which closet I put my clothes in."
A few laughs came through the receiver, but they were quickly suppressed.
"...Are you still in surgery?" Lin Fei was a little embarrassed, worried that everyone would hear what she was saying.
Liang Yanzhe: "Ye Zhan, you sew it up."
The boy whose name was called quickly replied, "Director Liang is here."
After a while, Liang Yanzhe must have come out of the operating room. His voice was a bit louder than before: "If you don't sleep in the master bedroom, can you still continue playing the game you want?"
Lin Fei's face flushed even more: "Dr. Liang, didn't you say you wouldn't mention bedroom pleasures when we're out...?"
"Then please, Mrs. Liang, move into your room first." Liang Yanzhe smiled. "I have surgery scheduled for tonight, so you and Awen will have dinner together."
Lin Fei hung up the phone in a daze.
Her mind was filled with the way he called her... Mrs. Liang?!
After thinking for a while, she laughed to herself, feeling like she was watching a TVB family drama about love and hate.
Lin Fei carried the clothes into the master bedroom's walk-in closet and immediately noticed three empty cabinets on the right; Liang Yanzhe had already arranged their places for her.
Zhong Shuwen went out in the evening, so Lin Fei ordered fried chicken, potato noodles, and chocolate ice cream. They then turned on a melodramatic soap opera about a wealthy family fighting over inheritance and happily ate carbs.
Shunshun curled up obediently on the sofa and fell asleep.
After eating everything, Lin Fei felt a little dizzy and wanted to lie down and sleep, but her stomach was so full that she could only go downstairs for a walk.
Liang Yanru knew she had moved out, so she called specifically to let her know.
"Did you rent a house near the company?" Liang Yanru asked.
Lin Fei: "I moved to my husband's house."
"Wait a minute? What did you say?" Liang Yanru stood up, her chair bouncing a meter away. "How come you're married?!"
"I've been too busy lately and forgot to tell you and TuTu," Lin Fei said. "Surprise, I have an even bigger surprise for you."
"Where are you now? I'm coming to find you." Liang Yanru was worried that Lin Fei might have been scammed.
Lin Fei sighed, "Aru, can't you just wish me well? Since you found out I got married, no one around me has congratulated me. I understand your feelings, your worry that I'll be deceived, but I'm an adult now, and I have the ability to judge right from wrong and to seek advantages and avoid disadvantages. I'm not saying anything more, you can scold me all you want, I'm all ears."
Liang Yanru remained silent for a while. "Tu Tu is performing at Green Shade Bar tonight. Want to grab a drink?"
"Okay, see you in fifteen minutes." Lin Fei walked straight out of the residential area.
Tu Xia has been playing in bands since college. After graduating, she had a period of inactivity at work. After being admitted to graduate school, she reconnected with her former bandmates and would perform at bars on weekends when she wasn't busy.
Lin Fei went to the reserved booth, and Tu Xia walked around the table to stand in front of her.
"Aru said you got married?" Her expression was full of disbelief. "A whirlwind marriage? That takes courage."
Tu Xia's reaction was not surprising, because this girl had already gotten married to He Jingshi in college, and was even more daring and bold than her.
Liang Yanru pulled Tu Xia back and whispered something in her ear. Tu Xia gave a silly laugh.
"I'm not suited to be a life coach, so I won't say anything." Tu Xia picked up her glass. "We're good friends, so we can talk about anything, let's drink."
Lin Fei understood immediately: Liang Yanru wanted Tu Xia to do her ideological work, but Tu Xia was unorthodox and would be fine as long as she didn't follow along with her nonsense.
The band members called Tu Xia away, and Lin Fei sat down next to her.
"What was the surprise you were talking about?" Liang Yanru didn't mention the whirlwind marriage anymore.
Lin Fei whispered in Liang Yanru's ear, "His surname is Liang, and he's a doctor."
“Liang? A doctor?” Liang Yanru understood her meaning in a second. “Is he a member of the Liang family? If he were a doctor in Jiangdu, I would definitely know him. Apart from my third sister, none of the other doctors in my generation work in Jiangdu. The other doctors in the Liang family have children who are the same age as us.”
Thinking of this, Liang Yanru's face darkened, and a bad feeling arose: "You wouldn't...?"
“I eat bran.” Lin Fei was speechless. “He only recently arrived in Jiangdu. His name is Liang Yanzhe.”
Liang Yanru's pupils slowly dilated. Unsure of the name she was hearing, her voice rose: "The same generation as me, with the character 'yan' in your name? Liang Yanzhe? Do you know what you're saying?"
"Is there... a problem with him?" Lin Fei was unaware of the Liang family's internal affairs. Although they were of the same generation, they were only distant relatives and might not even see each other during holidays.
Liang Yanru pursed her lips several times before saying, "I don't have much contact with my relatives in Gangdu, but I've heard my parents say that there's fierce competition for power there. Liang Yanzhe was the best candidate to inherit the family before he turned sixteen, but later he became what we call a discarded pawn. Large families aren't as harmonious as they seem on the surface; there are many internal conflicts of interest."
Lin Fei fell silent; she had never heard of any of these things before.
When the topic turned to sensitive figures, Liang Yanru noticed that Lin Fei's mood was off and started talking about the school's anniversary celebration at the end of the year.
Lin Fei seemed to be in high spirits, and he drank seven bottles of wine without ever emptying his glass.
Tu Xia felt a pang of pain the moment she saw the bill. She pulled Liang Yanru aside and whispered, "What did you do to her? The last time she drank this much was on her birthday during her freshman year. I thought she had broken up with her boyfriend."
"No, maybe he's in a good mood because he's married." Liang Yanru didn't dare to say anything more; Lin Fei might drink seven more bottles.
Tu Xia readily paid the bill: "Consider it a celebration for her."
Lin Fei has a higher alcohol tolerance than most people, but after drinking seven bottles, she felt a little dizzy. When the car arrived at the entrance of the residential area, she walked home.
The cool night breeze didn't dispel the smell of alcohol; instead, it almost gave her a cold.
She entered her password to enter the house, and Liang Yanzhe walked from the living room to the entrance hall to greet her.
"Have you been drinking?" He stepped forward to get her slippers and hung up her bag.
Lin Fei nodded and sniffed himself: "Am I very smelly?"
"It's alright, come in first." He reached out to help her.
Lin Fei walked unsteadily, her steps faltering as she led Liang Yanzhe. Even in this state, she still managed to greet Shunshun.
As she passed through the living room, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her and pointed to a square box on the dining table, asking, "What's that? It looks like a cake."
"It's a cake." Liang Yanzhe put his arm around her shoulder and helped her to a seat.
Lin Fei rested his chin on the dining table, his gaze level with the cake.
Liang Yanzhe opened the box, removed the transparent cardboard, and revealed the cake in its entirety.
It's six inches in size and has childish cartoon designs on it. It definitely wasn't bought for him, so it must have been bought for her.
"It's not my birthday today, is it Shunshun's birthday?" Lin Fei asked with a smile, looking up.
Liang Yanzhe took out sparkler candles and placed them in one corner of the cake. He said, "The cake was ordered yesterday, but I didn't have time to pick it up, so I changed it to today with the vendor."
Yesterday?
Yesterday was the day they got their marriage certificate.
"Don't you love anniversaries the most?" Liang Yanzhe said. "I've lived in Hong Kong for two months, and I buy a cake every other week. I guess I'm eating cake on anniversaries."
Lin Fei had almost forgotten.
Since he fulfilled his promise to spend her birthday with her that year, she has not celebrated any holidays since. Even when Tu Xia and Liang Yanru wanted to celebrate her birthday, she would make excuses to decline their invitations.
"Celebrating our marriage certificate, and also celebrating your move-in." Liang Yanzhe rubbed his thumb against the lighter, the flame leaping out and illuminating the upward curve of his lips. "Ready to make a wish?"
The heart-shaped sparkler was lit, and the crackling sparks illuminated their faces. His face still held a gentle smile, just like six years ago, as if nothing had changed. They were still in the port city, in his apartment.
Liang Yanzhe asked, "Don't you close your eyes when you make a wish?"
"The cake is ours, so we all have to make a wish." Lin Fei removed the burnt-out sparkler. "The other party will help make it come true."
What can I do for you?
"I haven't thought about it yet, I'll tell you later." Lin Fei stared at him and smiled, the gloom of the evening easily brushed away. "And you, what do you want me to do?"
Liang Yanzhe pondered for a moment: "Eat less carbohydrates and live a healthy life."
Lin Fei looked at the food waste bin, which contained the packaging bags from tonight's meals.
"I...I just had a craving."
"Non-literature".
Lin Fei looked at Liang Yanzhe and gestured with her lips: "It's a great day, let's cut the cake and not talk about anything else."
“You can eat, but in moderation. Don’t eat three portions by yourself anymore.” Liang Yanzhe had no intention of moving on. He walked to her side, placed his hands on the table and the back of the chair respectively, and completely blocked her on the chair.
"But I like to eat it," Lin Fei said stubbornly. "I'll feel terrible if I don't eat it."
"When did you develop this habit?" Liang Yanzhe pulled up a stool and sat down so she wouldn't have to look up at him.
Lin Fei thought for a long time: "I've always liked eating carbs."
“It’s fine if you like to eat, but it’s unhealthy to eat more than two people’s worth of food at every meal.” Liang Yanzhe asked, “A year ago?”
"After I start working." Lin Fei only controlled his diet for six months after being diagnosed with the disease. After the tests showed no problems, he ate freely again, but he was careful to stay healthy and only ate once every few days.
Liang Yanzhe raised his hand and patted her head. "You've worked hard."
Lin Fei didn't know why, but upon hearing his words, she inexplicably felt like crying.
“Feiwen, it’s not that I don’t want you to eat, but I hope you can eat the food you like while staying healthy.” Liang Yanzhe patiently explained to her, “Obesity caused by overeating is an emotional disorder. Work stress can be relieved in other ways. Overeating will only numb your emotions. The important thing is to find the problem and solve it. Otherwise, bad emotions are only temporarily suppressed by food and will still come out again.”
“Nobody has ever told me any of this.” Lin Fei turned his face away.
Liang Yanzhe thought she was dissatisfied with his lecturing.
“Mr. Liang, no one told me this was an emotional disorder.” Lin Fei looked at him again, her eyes moist and glistening with tears. “I didn’t realize it was an emotional problem either. If I had known, I would have resolved it.”
She smiled after saying that, trying to put his mind at ease.
But it pained him to see it.
“Feiwen, problems should be solved, but if it’s an emotional issue, you can take it slow and don’t force yourself to solve it right away.” Liang Yanzhe suddenly became curious about how the girl in front of him had grown up.
She possesses a captivating radiance and the courage to work hard alone in a foreign land, yet deep within her heart lies a wasteland from which she still doesn't know how to rebuild.
"But if I don't resolve it, I'll keep feeling miserable, and I hate being stuck in that mood. Is that wrong too?" Lin Fei had also wondered if the center in her brain that receives emotions was malfunctioning. Her first reaction to any difficult situation was to solve it, recklessly seeking solutions while being numb to her own emotional needs.
“You’re amazing because you have a better problem-solving ability than most people. But don’t be so hard on yourself; take better care of yourself.” Liang Yanzhe placed his hand on her shoulder. “Next time you want to eat something, ask yourself first if you really want to eat it, or if some inexplicable emotion is pushing you to eat it. Okay?”
Lin Fei reached out and hugged Liang Yanzhe tightly.
These are kind words.
No one had ever said these words that brought her peace of mind to her.
Liang Yanzhe responded to the hug, gently patting her back with his large hand to calm her agitated emotions.
After a while, Lin Fei pushed him away a distance and smiled, "Today is a good day, let's not talk about these things anymore. I will remember what you said."
Liang Yanzhe took the knife and handed it to Lin Fei.
She grabbed his hand and together they made the first cut.
"A surgeon's hand is so steady. Look how steady this cut is. That's what you call a divine knife," Lin Fei praised enthusiastically.
Liang Yanzhe took over the task of cutting the cake: "Then let the surgeon serve you."
Lin Fei ate half a piece, Liang Yanzhe finished the rest, and the rest was put in the refrigerator to be distributed in the department tomorrow.
“Ah…we ate one piece and then shared it, is that okay?” Lin Fei said. “Why don’t we buy a new one?”
“The new one isn’t our commemorative cake anymore, we can just explain it to them,” Liang Yanzhe urged Lin Fei. “I’ll clean it up, you go take a shower.”
Lin Fei pulled at her clothes and smelled them again. She smelled strongly of alcohol, but Liang Yanzhe, being kind, didn't pinch his nose and say she smelled bad when he hugged her.
I specifically spent an hour showering and drying my hair.
Standing in the center of the bedroom, Lin Fei was at a loss.
She was bold, but not bold enough when it came to sex, and was a little at a loss.
Hearing Liang Yanzhe's footsteps getting closer, Lin Fei lifted the corner of the blanket, crawled inside, and lay still.
After a while, the other side of the bed sank, and she felt the man approaching her.
"I need to grab my tablet; the students' papers need to be graded tonight," Liang Yanzhe gestured for Lin Fei to move.
Lin Fei sat up, her hair a mess.
Liang Yanzhe couldn't bear to watch, so he used his five fingers to comb her hair.
“From now on,” he hesitated for a moment before saying, “I will either comb my bangs straight or part them in the middle.”
"Is there any particular reason for this?" Lin Fei had noticed a long time ago that Liang Yanzhe liked to fix her hair.
He said, "Mild obsessive-compulsive disorder."
Lin Fei laughed so hard she almost fell backward, clutching her stomach. She hadn't expected Liang Yanzhe to have this habit.
After laughing it off, Lin Fei felt much more at ease when he lay down again.
"Go to sleep." Liang Yanzhe glanced at Lin Fei, who was lying beside him with his eyes open, doing nothing.
Lin Fei sat up and asked without thinking, "Are you sure you don't want to do anything?"
Liang Yanzhe paused, leaned forward slightly, and she thought he was going to kiss her, so she closed her eyes.
"Happy wedding." Liang Yanzhe smiled slightly and chuckled softly.
Lin Fei stared blankly at him, and suddenly a feeling of inexplicable grievance welled up inside her.
“Liang Yanzhe,” she called him by his full name, “you are the first person to wish me a happy marriage.”
She leaned against his lap and, unusually, spoke her mind: "I also need encouragement."
Liang Yanzhe stroked her soft, long hair.
At this moment, Lin Fei, lying in his arms, put away all her claws and fangs, and became coquettish and spoke softly.
He seemed to understand what she needed and why she had a certain quirk.
Lin Fei fell into a deep sleep in the warm atmosphere.
Liang Yanzhe had just finished reviewing the last paper and was about to put down his tablet when the doorbell rang.
Lin Fei was startled and sat up, his eyes glazed over.
Liang Yanzhe reassured her, "I'll go take a look."
Lin Fei slipped on her slippers and followed behind him: "I'll go with you."
Before Liang Yanzhe could answer, she clung tightly to his arm, and he took it in his hand.
Liang Yanzhe turned on the display screen in the entryway and saw the late-night visitor.
The woman outside the door noticed the security camera and kept watching it, as if she knew they were standing behind the door.
"Who is she?" Lin Fei looked at Liang Yanzhe warily, and loosened his grip.
Liang Yanzhe glanced at his empty palm; her attitude had changed too quickly.
