Su Jianguo took his last breath on his sickbed, still hearing the quarrel of his five children fighting over 300,000 yuan for surgery fees.
When he opened his eyes again, he had returned to t...
Everyone quieted down, even the two children sensed something was wrong and obediently put down their chopsticks.
"Yuzhen."
Su Jianguo's voice wasn't loud, but every word he spoke was firm and resounding.
"Your older sister's affairs are none of your business."
Su Yuzhen bit her lip.
"Father, that's not what I meant..."
"Then what do you mean?"
Su Jianguo stared at his youngest daughter.
"Your eldest sister is only twenty-eight years old. Are you expecting her to remain a widow for the rest of her life?"
"No, I'm just worried that my older sister will be wronged..."
Su Yuzhen shed tears of grievance.
During this time, Su Jianguo was not at home, and Su Yuzhen was depressed because of Zhang Qiang's matter. It was her eldest sister, Su Yufen, who was always there to comfort her.
The sisters' relationship blossomed rapidly.
Su Yufen quickly hugged her younger sister and gently comforted her.
"I know you're doing this for my own good, don't cry."
Wang Xiulan sighed and turned to her husband.
"Honey, what do you think?"
Su Jianguo pondered for a moment.
"It is indeed too early; it should be at least six months from now. Yufen is still young, and she really shouldn't be raising two children alone for the rest of her life. But remarriage is a big deal and needs to be considered carefully."
Su Yufen raised her head, her eyes filled with hesitation.
"Dad, I...I don't know what to do. Living at home all this time isn't ideal. Sometimes I feel so tired being alone, but I'm also afraid of finding the wrong person and making the children suffer..."
"sister!"
Su Yuzhen lifted her head from her sister's arms.
"You don't need to force yourself! Mom and I can help you take care of Da Mao and Er Mao. Isn't it better for us to be a family together than to hire outsiders?"
Su Jianguo frowned.
"Nonsense! Your sister is still young; she needs someone to rely on. Besides, can you help her for the rest of her life?"
"Why not?"
Su Yuzhen stubbornly retorted.
"Once Dad makes money from his greenhouse, and our family's financial situation improves, will we still be worried about not being able to support two children?"
"Is this about money?"
Su Jianguo's voice suddenly rose.
"Your sister needs someone who understands and cares for her! Do you think everyone is like you, so full of romantic love that you almost got kidnapped by human traffickers?"
These words pierced Su Yuzhen's heart like a knife.
The little girl turned pale and suddenly stood up.
"Yuzhen!"
Su Yufen tried to grab her, but was shaken off.
Su Yuzhen ran back to her room crying and slammed the door shut.
An awkward silence fell over the dinner table.
Wang Xiulan sighed, seemingly wanting to say something but then stopping herself.
"Master..."
Su Jianguo rubbed his temples.
"This child is becoming increasingly unruly."
Su Yufen lowered her head, her voice choked with sobs.
"Father, Mother, it's all my fault, I've caused you so much worry..."
"Silly child."
Wang Xiulan held her eldest daughter's hand.
How can you blame yourself?
Su Jianguo's heart softened when he saw his eldest daughter's tired face.
Since her alcoholic son-in-law died, Su Yufen has been living in her own home, but raising two children on her own has not been easy.
"Yu Fen."
His voice softened.
"This isn't something to rush. In six months, I'll ask around and find someone reliable."
Su Yufen nodded gently.
"I'll listen to Dad."
Wang Xiulan smiled with satisfaction.
"That's right. Come on, everyone, let's eat; the food's getting cold."
...
The morning sunlight streamed into the room through the gaps in the curtains, and Su Jianguo stretched.
During the two days he rested at home, he slept exceptionally soundly, even dreaming of the lush green vegetable seedlings in the greenhouse.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!"
Excited shouts came from outside the door from Da Mao and Er Mao, followed by a knocking sound.
Su Jianguo opened the door with a smile, and the two little ones immediately rushed over, each grabbing one of his legs.
"Slow down, slow down, Grandpa's old bones can't take this kind of rough treatment."
Despite saying this, Su Jianguo patted his two grandsons' heads with a big smile.
"Grandpa, you promised to take us fishing yesterday!"
Da Mao tilted his little face up, his eyes sparkling.
"Yeah, the sun's already high in the sky!"
Er Mao imitated him, even pointing exaggeratedly out the window.
Su Jianguo glanced at the wall clock; it was only 7:30.
"You two little gluttons, can't you wait this long?"
"They woke up before dawn."
Su Yufen walked in carrying breakfast, smiling helplessly.
"She kept saying she wanted to go fishing with Grandpa."
"Okay, let's have a good time today."
Su Jianguo sat down and ate breakfast while thinking about what he needed to prepare for fishing.
There were no ready-made fishing tackle shops in those days; you had to do everything yourself.
After breakfast, Su Jianguo busied himself in the yard.
He found a thin bamboo pole and then rummaged through his toolbox for fishing line and hooks.
Da Mao and Er Mao followed behind him like two little tails, occasionally letting out exclamations of surprise.
"Grandpa, what is this?"
Er Mao pointed to a roll of transparent nylon thread and asked.
"This is fishing line. We'll tie it to the bamboo pole later, and you'll feel it when a fish bites."
Su Jianguo explained patiently, his hands never stopping.
Why did the fish bite the hook?
Da Mao tilted his head, looking puzzled.
Su Jianguo smiled and pinched his little face.
"Because we need to put something delicious on the hook, just like how the fish are attracted by the smell of Grandma's braised pork."
