Su Jianguo took his last breath on his sickbed, still hearing the quarrel of his five children fighting over 300,000 yuan for surgery fees.
When he opened his eyes again, he had returned to t...
Wow! Grandpa is amazing!
Er Mao clapped his little hands and cheered.
"Shhh!!"
Su Jianguo made a shushing gesture.
"You have to be quiet when fishing, otherwise you'll scare the fish away."
The two children immediately covered their mouths, their eyes wide open, staring at the buoy on the water's surface.
In less than five minutes, the float suddenly sank. Su Jianguo reacted quickly, flicking his wrist, and the fishing rod bent into an arc.
"They've taken the bait!"
He spoke softly and began skillfully reeling in the line.
Da Mao and Er Mao held their breath nervously, their little faces turning red.
As the fishing line was reeled in, a shimmering silver crucian carp was pulled from the water, sparkling brilliantly in the sunlight.
"Wow, that's huge!"
Da Mao finally couldn't help but shout out.
Su Jianguo removed the hook from the fish and put it into the bucket he had brought.
"The first fish, not bad, right?"
The two children stood around the bucket, excitedly watching the crucian carp that was still thrashing about.
The surrounding fishermen also cast surprised glances.
Most of them might not catch a single fish all morning.
Su Jianguo rebaited the fish and cast his line again.
This time, the wait was even shorter; in less than three minutes, another crucian carp took the bait.
"Grandpa, you're amazing!"
Er Mao looked at Su Jianguo with admiration.
"That's the beauty of baiting."
Su Jianguo explained as he picked up the fish.
"Fish are attracted to food and are naturally more likely to take the bait."
Over the next half hour, Su Jianguo caught five fish in a row, one of which was a carp weighing five or six pounds. When he pulled it up, the fishing rod was almost bent at a ninety-degree angle.
This attracted a crowd of anglers who gathered around to watch the spectacle.
"Comrade, you're incredibly lucky!"
An elderly man with white hair couldn't help but ask.
Su Jianguo wiped the sweat from his forehead and laughed.
"It's not luck, it's method. Baiting can greatly improve fishing efficiency."
"Could you teach me this method of baiting?"
The old man's eyes lit up.
"My surname is Zhao, and I've been fishing for over thirty years. This is the first time I've ever seen someone fish like this."
Su Jianguo readily nodded.
"Of course, Uncle Zhao. It's actually very simple; just lure them over with food that fish like..."
He explained in detail the principles and techniques of baiting, and Grandpa Zhao and the other anglers listened with nods of approval.
"I see!"
Grandpa Zhao suddenly realized.
"No wonder you catch fish as soon as you cast your line, while we haven't seen a bite for ages."
Su Jianguo then took out some corn kernels and distributed them to everyone.
"Come on, everyone give it a try! Let's all have a great time fishing today!"
Soon, the fishermen along the lake followed Su Jianguo's example and started baiting their fishing spots, making the entire lake lively and bustling.
People caught fish every now and then, and cheers rose and fell.
"Grandpa, you're amazing!"
Da Mao looked up at his little face, his expression full of admiration.
"Everyone will listen to you!"
Su Jianguo smiled and rubbed his head.
"Fishing, like life, requires sharing. True happiness comes from everyone being happy."
Around noon, Su Jianguo used the small stove he brought to grill two fish, sprinkling them with simple salt and chili powder, and the aroma filled the air.
Da Mao and Er Mao ate with gusto, their mouths greasy, repeatedly saying it was the best fish they had ever eaten.
"Eat slowly, don't choke on a bone."
Su Jianguo carefully removed the fish bones from the two children's bones, and he felt very satisfied seeing their contented expressions.
The afternoon was equally enjoyable.
Su Jianguo taught the two children basic fishing skills. Although they didn't catch any fish, their focused and expectant expressions reminded Su Jianguo of the excitement he felt when he first went fishing.
As the sun set, Su Jianguo's bucket was filled with fish, more than a dozen of them.
He shared most of the fish with the surrounding anglers, especially that old man Zhao.
"I can't accept this..."
Grandpa Zhao declined.
"Take it."
Su Jianguo smiled.
"My family can't eat that much. Let's go fishing together another day. You can teach me some traditional fishing techniques, and we can learn from each other."
On the way back, Da Mao and Er Mao each held one of Su Jianguo's hands, chattering about what they had seen and heard that day.
Listening to the children's innocent and carefree words and looking at the magnificent sunset on the horizon, Su Jianguo suddenly felt that such ordinary yet warm days were the greatest happiness in life.
"Grandpa, can we come fishing again tomorrow?"
As we neared home, Er Mao looked up and asked.
Su Jianguo squatted down and looked at his two grandsons at eye level.
"Of course, Grandpa will bring you here often after he finishes working on the greenhouse. But right now, we need to take these fish back to Grandma to see, okay?"
"Yes! Let Grandma make braised fish!"
Da Mao jumped up excitedly.
Pushing open the courtyard gate, Wang Xiulan and Su Yufen came out to greet them. When they saw the fish in the bucket, they were both surprised and their eyes widened.
"so much?"
Wang Xiulan looked at her husband in disbelief.
"Honey, have you scooped up all the fish from the lake?"
Su Jianguo smiled smugly.
"Well, isn't your husband quite capable?"
"Grandpa is amazing!"
Er Mao couldn't wait to start telling the story.
"All the other grandpas are coming to learn fishing from Grandpa!"
Su Yufen looked at the smiles on her father's and her two children's faces, and a hint of relief flashed in her eyes.
"Dad, did Da Mao and Er Mao cause you any trouble?"
Su Jianguo shook his head and took out the smallest fish, handing it to Da Mao.
