Su Jianguo took his last breath on his sickbed, still hearing the quarrel of his five children fighting over 300,000 yuan for surgery fees.
When he opened his eyes again, he had returned to t...
So many people!
Su Yufen exclaimed in surprise and subconsciously pulled the two children closer to her.
Su Jianguo frowned.
"You guys wait here, I'll go buy the tickets."
He squeezed into the crowd and quickly disappeared into the sea of people.
The station was incredibly noisy, with various dialects mixed together, and the cries of vendors, the crying of children, and the shouts of drivers rising and falling.
The air was filled with the smells of sweat, tobacco, and other unidentified odors.
Wang Xiulan covered her nose with a handkerchief, while the old lady shielded the two children in front of her, warily looking around.
After a long while, Su Jianguo finally squeezed back, covered in sweat, clutching a few crumpled train tickets in his hand.
"I got a ticket. It's the 9 o'clock bus, and that's the only one left."
"With so many people, is it even possible to squeeze on?"
Wang Xiulan asked with a worried expression.
Su Jianguo wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"Don't worry, I have a plan."
The waiting time felt exceptionally long.
The two children began to get impatient. Da Mao kept asking for water, while Er Mao kept saying he was hungry.
Su Jianguo took out two boiled eggs from his bundle, peeled them, and gave them to the children.
"Have something to eat first. When we get to the village, your great-grandmother will cook something delicious for you."
Finally, it's almost nine o'clock.
As soon as the station staff started calling out the train schedules, the crowd immediately stirred and surged toward the ticket gates like a tidal wave.
Su Jianguo picked up Da Mao and shouted to his family.
Stay close to me! Don't get separated!
He broke through the crowd like an icebreaker, with Wang Xiulan leading Er Mao closely behind, while Su Mingfu protected the two elderly people.
After squeezing through the ticket gate, they finally saw the dilapidated bus.
The bus's paint was peeling off, the windows were covered in dust, and various luggage and baskets were tied to the roof.
"Get in the car quickly!"
Su Jianguo urged.
"There aren't many seats, so please let the elderly and children sit first!"
The carriage was already packed with people, and passengers were standing shoulder to shoulder in the aisle.
Su Jianguo spotted the three empty seats left in the back row.
"Dad, Mom, please sit over there! Xiulan, why don't you squeeze in with the two children?"
And what about you?
Wang Xiulan asked worriedly.
"Mingfu, Yufen, and I can just stand here."
Su Jianguo said without hesitation that after helping the two elderly people settle into their seats, he then let Wang Xiulan hold her two children and squeeze into the last seat.
The smell inside the carriage was even worse than outside, but there was nothing we could do; these were the conditions for traveling these days.
As soon as Su Yufen got on the bus, she frowned and covered her nose with a handkerchief.
Su Mingfu stood in the aisle, trying his best to create a small space for his family.
"Are you all seated?"
The driver shouted gruffly and started the car without waiting for a reply.
The bus jolted violently and slowly pulled out of the station.
Not long after the car started moving, Da Mao began to fidget restlessly.
"Grandpa, I feel unwell..."
Su Jianguo looked down and saw that the child's face was pale and his forehead was covered in fine beads of sweat, typical symptoms of motion sickness.
"Hang in there, Da Mao."
Su Jianguo took a small cloth bag out of his pocket.
"Come on, smell this."
The cloth bag contained a few pieces of dried orange peel, which he had specially prepared last night.
Da Mao took a few deep breaths of the refreshing scent of orange peel, and his complexion improved slightly.
"Dad, does your method really work?"
Su Yufen asked curiously.
"The old method."
Su Jianguo smiled.
"I used to get carsick when I was little, and that's how your grandma cured me."
The car bumped along the uneven dirt road, each bump eliciting gasps from the passengers.
Er Mao also started to feel uncomfortable, his little face scrunched up. Su Jianguo did the same thing, letting Er Mao smell orange peel as well.
Just then, Da Mao suddenly grabbed Su Jianguo's clothes, his voice trembling with tears.
Grandpa, I need to pee!
Wang Xiulan panicked.
"What are we going to do? There's no toilet on the bus! And with so many people stuck in traffic ahead, it's not easy to get off."
Su Jianguo looked around. The car was driving in the middle of nowhere. At this point, even if he asked the driver to stop, the driver probably wouldn't.
He made a quick decision and picked up Da Mao.
"Come on, Grandpa will help you."
He squeezed to the car window, pushed it open forcefully, and the howling wind immediately rushed in.
"Just pee here, facing outwards."
Da Mao timidly did as he was told, and a thin stream of water flew out of the window.
Just then, a middle-aged man wearing glasses in the front row suddenly turned around and shouted sharply.
"Hey, hey, what are you doing? That's outrageous!"
Su Jianguo ignored him and continued to help Da Mao solve the problem.
The man, however, persisted.
"Hey you! Don't you have any sense of public decency? You peed all over my face!"
Su Jianguo then raised his head and said somewhat embarrassedly.
"I'm so sorry, the child just couldn't hold it in any longer. Please bear with him."
"Take responsibility for what!"
The bespectacled man raised his voice even louder.
"A grown man like you doesn't know the rules? If you need to pee, get off the bus!"
All eyes in the carriage turned to them, and some people began to whisper among themselves.
Su Jianguo's face darkened, but before he could speak, Old Master Su's voice came from the back row:
"Comrade, the child is too young to hold it in. Please, this is good stuff—child's urine, it's good for reducing internal heat."
The bespectacled man turned his head and saw the white-haired old man. His momentum weakened slightly, but he still wouldn't let it go.
"Okay, okay, remember to be more careful next time. Use a little more force!"
