Su Jianguo took his last breath on his sickbed, still hearing the quarrel of his five children fighting over 300,000 yuan for surgery fees.
When he opened his eyes again, he had returned to t...
His voice trembled, and tears welled up in his eyes.
When have I ever lied?
Su Jianguo snorted.
"But let me make this clear from the start: if you don't pass the exam, you'll have to pay back the money you spent."
Su Mingfu knelt down with a thud and kowtowed three times.
"Dad! I will definitely pass the exam! I will definitely not let you down!"
Su Jianguo reached out and helped Su Mingfu up.
"Alright, that's enough. A real man shouldn't kneel down so easily."
Finally, Su Jianguo's gaze fell on his youngest daughter, Su Yuzhen.
This daughter, whom he loved most in his previous life, was the most spoiled person in the whole family, except for his eldest son. He never imagined that in the end, this daughter would treat him so badly.
Su Yuzhen noticed her father's gaze and unconsciously shrank back.
She was just sixteen years old, fair-skinned, and dressed in a fashionable polyester shirt, standing out among her older siblings who were all covered in dust.
"Yuzhen."
Su Jianguo's voice turned cold.
"From today onwards, you'll help with the housework."
Su Yuzhen looked up abruptly, her beautiful almond-shaped eyes filled with disbelief.
"Dad! I still have to go to school!"
"What's wrong with going to school?"
Su Jianguo sneered.
"When your older sister was your age, she got up before dawn to fetch water and cook, and after school she still had to feed the pigs. And you? You don't even wash your own socks!"
Su Yuzhen pouted and looked at her mother with a wronged expression.
"mom."
Just as Wang Xiulan was about to speak, Su Jianguo gave her a glance, and she immediately shut her mouth.
"I'm the boss in this house!"
Su Jianguo's voice rose eight octaves.
"Starting tomorrow, you'll be responsible for washing dishes, sweeping, and doing laundry. If you don't do it well, don't expect to eat!"
Su Yuzhen burst into tears, stamping her feet and crying out.
"Dad, you're unfair! Why don't they all have to do any work, but I have to!"
"Smack!"
Su Jianguo slammed his hand on the table, making the teacups jump.
"You've gone too far!"
He grabbed the belt, and Su Yuzhen screamed in fright, hiding behind her mother.
Wang Xiulan shielded her youngest daughter, looking pleadingly at her husband.
"My dear husband, Yuzhen is still young."
"Small?"
Su Jianguo sneered.
"Sixteen and you still think you're young? You've spoiled him!"
He went around the table and pulled Su Yuzhen out.
The little girl was so frightened that her face turned pale and she trembled all over.
"Father! Father, I was wrong! I'll do it! I'll do it, okay?"
She cried and begged for mercy, terrified of being beaten.
Su Jianguo released his grip and said coldly.
"Remember what you said. Starting tomorrow, I will personally oversee this."
Su Yuzhen nodded, sobbing, and dared not argue back.
She had been spoiled since childhood and had never suffered such grievances before. She felt both scared and resentful.
Su Jianguo looked around and saw that his children all had their heads down and dared not say a word, then nodded in satisfaction.
"Remember what I said today. I've spoiled you all too much before, and you've all become unruly. From today onwards, anyone who can't adapt can get out of here!"
After saying that, he got up and went to the inner room, leaving his family in silence.
Wang Xiulan quickly followed, carefully closed the door, and then asked in a low voice.
"Honey, what's wrong with you today?"
Su Jianguo sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and let out a long breath.
"Xiulan, we lived our first half of lives in a daze."
Wang Xiulan didn't understand, but she nodded nonetheless.
Although she was weak, she wasn't stupid; she knew that her husband's actions today were all for the good of the family.
"Is the third son really being made to repeat a year?"
She asked in a low voice.
"Tuition fees aren't cheap..."
Su Jianguo smiled.
"Don't worry, I have a plan."
He took his wife's rough hand and gently stroked the calluses on it.
These hands have done his laundry and cooked for him for decades without ever complaining.
"Xiulan, from now on, you can stay home and enjoy your life."
Su Jianguo's voice was gentle.
"Leave the outside matters to me."
Wang Xiulan's eyes welled up with tears.
She had been married into the Su family for thirty years, and this was the first time she had heard her husband say such a thing.
"The head of the household."
She choked up and couldn't speak.
Su Jianguo patted her hand.
"Go to sleep, you'll be busy tomorrow."
In the stillness of the night, Su Jianguo lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), listening to his wife's even breathing, his thoughts racing.
Having been reborn, he not only wants to change his own destiny, but also to put his family back on track.
The tragedy of the past must never be repeated!
On the other side.
At the home of the eldest son, Su Mingqiang.
When Li Jinhua returned, she kicked over the enamel basin, spilling water all over the floor and soaking the cement ground.
She gripped Su Mingqiang's arm tightly, her nails almost digging into his flesh.
"Su Mingqiang! Are you just going to stand by and watch your father bully me today?"
Her voice was shrill.
"Did I, Li Jinhua, marry into your Su family just to be mistreated?"
Su Mingqiang sat on the edge of the bed with his head down, wincing in pain from his arm, but he dared not break free.
He knows his wife too well; if she dares to resist now, she won't be sleeping tonight.
"Are you mute?"
Li Jinhua grabbed his ear.
"Your dad said he's coming to my parents' house to ask for money, did you hear that? Three thousand yuan! Where would my parents' family possibly come up with that?"
Su Mingqiang finally raised his head, his fleshy face twitching.
"Jinhua, don't panic."
"Not in a hurry?"
Li Jinhua grabbed an enamel mug from the table and smashed it.
Clang!
