1. Kangxi's Harem: ...
Having come up with an idea, Kangxi, being a man of action, decided to approach the young palace maid in order to be more comfortable with her while concealing his identity.
His thoughts and actions stem from the fact that he is not yet old, and Wu Sangui died this year.
Although the Revolt of the Three Feudatories had not yet been quelled, the outcome was already decided, and he could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Only then did he have the leisure to tease the palace maids he found amusing.
In previous years, even if someone had encountered such a situation, they would at most have been sent directly to the harem. It can only be said that Wang Shu was indeed quite lucky. The timing of her appearance was perfect, neither too early nor too late. Just when Kangxi needed to relax, she appeared.
For Emperor Kangxi, her appearance was an interlude in his life, a diversion.
For Yu Wangshu, she needed to establish herself in his harem and then try to survive.
It could be said that both parties were in love and had a mutual attraction; they "met by chance" one evening.
A chance encounter that both of them knew the truth about.
Although Wang Shu did not know when Kangxi had seen her, she knew that Kangxi knew of her existence after she was suddenly assigned a job by Granny Zhang to work in the library in the inner palace.
A "foolish" palace maid, especially a new one, would not be allowed to enter the library in the rear palace unless there were special circumstances.
Following Granny Zhang's instructions, she organized the books. Actually, there wasn't much to organize. She fiddled with them for a while and then got bored. She found a secluded corner and couldn't help but doze off.
After all, she's a "silly beauty." As an actress, an method actor, she has to get into character even without an audience or cameras.
Not long after, she felt someone tap her shoulder, which startled her awake. She turned around and saw a man.
The system's voice rang in her mind: "He is Emperor Kangxi."
Last time when I shared books, the system went out to gather information.
Wang Shu stared wide-eyed at Kangxi, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes: "Who are you?"
Emperor Kangxi could immediately read the emotions in her eyes; the little palace maid had been caught slacking off and was terrified.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone about your laziness. I'm the eunuch in charge of copying books."
Wang Shu looked at him suspiciously: "But eunuchs and palace maids are not allowed to read, you're lying to me, right?"
Kangxi forgot about this, coughed, and added, "There are always exceptions. It's not proper for foreign officials to stay in the library all the time. It's only because His Majesty has given special permission."
Wang Shu naturally didn't believe it, but her demeanor suggested that she completely believed him.
"I see. In that case, I won't disturb you from copying the book any longer. I'll go somewhere else."
"No way! I finished copying my book today and I'm a bit bored. You want to be lazy, and I want to be lazy too. Let's be lazy together!"
Wang Shu asked timidly, "Isn't this inappropriate?"
However, his tone suggested he was eager to try.
Kangxi looked at her expression, at her conflicted look of wanting but not daring to, and found it really interesting and easy to understand.
"What's wrong with it? There's no one else around anyway. I used to slack off all the time, so no one will notice."
Wang Shu, who was "unresolute," naturally wavered.
"Really?"
"Of course it's true."
That's how the two met. When Wang Shu saw that Kangxi was hiding his name and playing role-playing games, she was naturally happy to cooperate.
"May I have your name?"
"My name is Wang Shu."
"Wang Shu, what a beautiful name. Wang Shu was the vanguard in front, and Fei Lian followed behind."
Wang Shu looked puzzled: "What do you mean?"
"Don't you know the origin of your name?"
“My name was given to me by my father, but I don’t remember him. No one has told me the origin of my name. Since you know, do you know what Wangshu means?”
Emperor Kangxi lost his father at the age of eight and his mother at the age of ten. When he talked about his parents, he mostly had unpleasant and sad memories. But Wangshu was different. Her parents were also not by her side, but when she talked about her father, she did not show any sorrow.
It made Kangxi feel as if some of the unpleasant memories and melancholy had dissipated.
She was a palace maid who could make people happy.
Kangxi answered her seriously: "It means the moon goddess, and also refers to the moon."
Wang Shu subconsciously looked up, then felt annoyed, as if she had just remembered that it was still daytime, the moon had not yet risen, and they were still indoors.
Emperor Kangxi was amused by her clumsy actions.
Wang Shu glared at him angrily, "You're not allowed to laugh."
Their big, round eyes look even rounder when they glare, but they have no intimidating power whatsoever; they only make people want to bully them even more.
Kangxi didn't consider himself a bad person, but looking at her, he couldn't help but want to tease her. Thinking this, he did just that, and he reached out and pinched her cheek.
The girl, in her early teens, had such delicate skin that pinching it felt like being wrapped in the finest silk; she was truly exquisite.
Wang Shu looked at her in disbelief: "You're such a bad girl~"
In short, it was not a coherent sentence.
Kangxi obediently let go, and her face instantly turned red; it was from his pinching.
"Why are you like this! It hurts so much."
Kangxi felt he hadn't used much force, but he hadn't expected her to be so delicate. A single touch left a red mark, and he couldn't help but regret it, thinking it must have hurt quite a bit.
"I was wrong, I was wrong, I won't do it again, please forgive me this once!"
Seeing Kangxi's sincere attitude, Wangshu nodded arrogantly: "Alright, I'll forgive you this time."
And so, after spending about two weeks together, the two became familiar with each other.
That day, Wangshu met her cousin Baozhu.
Strictly speaking, it was her cousin Baozhu who wanted to see her.
Baozhu: "Do you want to serve the Emperor?"
Wang Shu's eyes widened: "Sister, I don't want to..."
Baozhu held her hand, her face full of eager anticipation: "No, you want to, you must want to."
