1. Kangxi's Harem: ...
Consort Yu shook her head: "Hongzhou is a very naughty child. I know that the Emperor is quite displeased with him. I heard that you are very good at raising children and that the Sixth Prince is very well-behaved. I couldn't help but bother you."
Jia Yue breathed a sigh of relief, finally understanding why she had come to her door.
After Consort Yu finished speaking, the wet nurse brought Hongzhao in.
Jia Yue took the child and was taken aback by what she saw: "I didn't expect my younger sister to be so skilled at holding a child. She really cares about the child. My older sister is not as good as you."
Jia Yue's face was filled with a happy kind of trouble: "The main problem is that Hong Zhao is a clingy child, and he cries and fusses a lot. He's only calmer when he's with me."
Consort Yu was taken aback, not expecting it to be like this. Nowadays, most of the children in the royal family are raised by wet nurses, and the mothers only occasionally inquire about them.
However, Consort Yu quickly recovered and said, "A mother and child are of one heart. It wasn't easy for you to give birth to the Sixth Prince, and the child loves you, his mother! You should be happy."
"Yes! We should be happy."
Once they started talking about their child, the slightly awkward atmosphere between them disappeared.
Consort Yu looked at Hongzhao in Jiayue's arms. He was clever and adorable, like a fairy child.
"The Sixth Prince is so lively and clever; he is bound to have a bright future."
Jia Yue's smile faded when she heard Jia Yue's sudden remark: "The Emperor's children are naturally all lively and clever. I think Hong Zhou, my sister's son, is also destined for great things!"
Consort Yu seemed to realize that she had said the wrong thing and quickly added, "Being born into the royal family is a great achievement in itself. It was you who were talking nonsense, sister."
Jia Yue: "That makes sense, but did you really come here today just to see Hong Zhao?"
Consort Yu's smile faded slightly: "Nothing can be hidden from you, sister. I've come here today because I have something to ask of you."
"What's up?"
She felt that her relationship with Consort Yu was probably not particularly close! At least not close enough for her to be able to "ask for favors".
"It's like this, Hongzhou likes to run around everywhere. He happened to run into the Imperial Household Department delivering things to his sister, and he saw the Sixth Prince's puzzle. Hongzhou wanted it too. When I asked, I found out that it was made for the Sixth Prince by my sister. I came here today just to ask my sister about that puzzle...?"
Jia Yue finally breathed a sigh of relief; it was just a toy!
It's a big deal, really.
The puzzle was simply an ancient version of a modern puzzle game, slightly modified by her, with a falcon-and-dragon structure.
This is a very difficult thing to do.
"That thing isn't difficult. The people in the Imperial Household Department should be able to make it. Sister, just tell them to make one."
"Having obtained her younger sister's consent, the older sister went back and instructed people to make it."
The food wasn't difficult to make, but Jia Yue was the first person I thought of. Without Jia Yue's approval, Consort Yu couldn't make it in private, otherwise it would seem like she was secretly copying someone else.
Consort Yu got the result she wanted and left not long after.
Jia Yue assumed she had come for the puzzle and politely saw her off.
"Your Majesty, Consort Yu has gone to great lengths for the Fifth Prince."
Jia Yue smiled and shook her head: "Who knows!"
She couldn't understand Consort Yu; there were too many people in the harem she couldn't understand.
After spending two days with the Imperial Concubine, Yinzhen returned to Bitong Academy.
Only then did the favor shown to Jia Yue by the other women in the harem feel real.
Open and honest, upon hearing that Yinzhen had gone to Bitong Academy, the Consort couldn't help but feel anxious and panicked.
"What should we do? The Emperor went to Bitong Academy again. Do you think he might have fallen for Consort Jing and no longer like me?"
Her tone was full of doubt, uncertainty, and fear.
Having grown accustomed to the emperor's favor, Jia Yue suddenly became the emperor's favorite. Although she doesn't seem to be as favored as she used to be, Yinzhen had never favored any other woman for several days in a row before.
"Your Majesty, the most important thing now is the child. The Emperor heard that you were not feeling well, so he stayed with you for two days. Consort Jing's favor is only because of the Sixth Prince. The Emperor's favor towards Consort Jing is only because of the Sixth Prince. Once Your Majesty's child is born, the Emperor's heart will naturally return to Your Majesty."
The palace servants' words of comfort were not exactly logical, but the Imperial Concubine still chose to believe them.
"Really?"
"This servant would not dare to lie to Your Majesty. Consort Jing is also a former servant of the Prince's residence. If His Majesty liked her, he would not have initially granted her only the rank of Consort. Even though she gave birth to the Sixth Prince, she would still only be a Consort, wouldn't she?"
The imperial concubine nodded: "You're right."
Jia Yue was naturally unaware of the panic the Imperial Concubine felt as she began to gain favor.
Recently, she found some amusement for herself and, thinking of Hongzhao, decided to draw something for him.
During the Qing Dynasty, novels were very popular, so she had someone find Journey to the West. After obtaining Yinzhen's permission, Jiayue began to draw Journey to the West in her spare time.
The reason she sought Yinzhen's consent was simply because she was aware of the literary inquisitions during the Qing Dynasty, and she feared that people would use this as a pretext to attack her.
When Yinzhen came, she spent time with him attentively. When he didn't come, she would take Hongzhao and spend every day in the study, the mother and son each doing their own thing.
Because of the emperor's favor, the Imperial Household Department was very sensible, and the quality of life at Bitong Academy was excellent.
Jia Yue found these leisurely days very pleasant.
And so, August arrived.
I've been at the Old Summer Palace for three months now.
At that moment, news came from the palace.
"Your Majesty, Consort Lin, who was left in the palace, has miscarried."
After listening, Jia Yue paused for a moment, but wasn't too surprised. She sighed and said, "Children in the palace are difficult to give birth to and difficult to raise! What exactly is going on?"
"Your Majesty, it is said that Consort Lin was unaware of her pregnancy and used too much ice, which led to a miscarriage."
"If I remember correctly, Lin Chang is at least three or four months pregnant!"
