Rebirth in 1984: Beginning with Han Card Development

What happens to the future when humanity loses its imagination?

That slogan created a sensation during the summer of 1984.

Back then, computers couldn't support Chinese input and co...

Chapter 113 is a hit.

Reborn in 1984: Starting with the Development of Chinese Character Cards, Chapter 113: Zhao Ye played all six popular fighting games, which were not much different from the works in his previous life.

Perhaps there is a slight difference in the visual quality.

Unfortunately, it was an 8-bit console with limited color options; these fighting games were originally designed for 16-bit arcade platforms. However, they were still playable. In the past, Chinese knock-off manufacturers ported some major arcade titles, such as *The King of Fighters 1997* and *Street Fighter II*, to the Famicom. They looked pretty good, and the impact on players was no less than the originals.

The Qiongqi 1 game console itself is more powerful than the FC, and the game cartridges have MMC chips that are specially designed to enhance the game graphics, which is much better than those domestic knock-offs.

Of course, playing fighting games on an arcade machine seems to be more fun than playing them with a controller.

Zhao Ye also discovered this problem during his trial play.

No problem, Wujiang Group can just develop arcade games.

The arcade market is still very large.

In the 1990s, video game arcades sprang up like mushrooms after rain in China. However, with the rise of internet cafes, video game arcades gradually declined.

Based on this, arcade games seem to have at least another 14 years of market potential.

...

When autumn comes on the eighth day of the ninth lunar month, it refers to the day before the Double Ninth Festival on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. The eighth day of the ninth lunar month is for the sake of rhyme.

September 8th in the lunar calendar in 1986 corresponds to October 11th in the Gregorian calendar.

Wujiang Group was given more than a month to produce game cartridges.

From that day on, the Shanghai Wujiang factory began working overtime to produce these six games.

Zhao Ye took some time to visit the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and discussed the possibility of adapting six fighting games into comics and animated films.

Zhao Ye said confidently to Xu Xiangming, the director of the film studio, "These six games are bound to be a hit. If they are adapted into comics and animated films, they will definitely be very popular."

"Then I'll arrange for people to start with the comic book production, and then adapt it into an animated film!" Xu Xiangming thought for a moment and replied.

"Yes, this arrangement is best. Of these six games, I have the highest hopes for *Street Fighter* and *The King of Fighters*. So, when adapting these two games, please have the screenwriters put in extra effort to make the stories better and the logic more coherent. If possible in the future, we'll also make live-action movies! By the way, you can take a look at DC Comics and Marvel Comics for reference. These two comics have created many superhero characters, such as Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and so on. A few years ago, *Superman* was even adapted into a movie by Warner Bros.! I hope that one day, these game characters of ours can also be made into movies!"

Upon hearing this, Xu Xiangming immediately understood the significant value of these game adaptations. He nodded solemnly to Zhao Ye and said, "Boss, don't worry, I will have the screenwriters work hard to write a good story that will definitely satisfy you!"

"Hmm. By the way, how's the animation production for 'Dragon Quest,' 'The Legend of Zelda,' and 'Final Fantasy' going?"

"The first season of all three animated series has been completed, and each has only sixteen episodes."

"Yes, send them to Japanese TV stations now and have them broadcast them as soon as possible. This month, we'll try to unleash the potential of 'Dragon Quest,' 'The Legend of Zelda,' and 'Final Fantasy.' Next month, fighting games will be released, which will likely affect the sales of other games..."

"Okay, boss, I'll do as you say right away!"

...

From the Japanese side

The manga series "Dragon Quest", "The Legend of Zelda", and "Final Fantasy" have been very popular in Japan since their release.

Sales of these three games surged overnight, which also boosted overall sales.

To date, Wujiang Group has sold 5.2 million units, but weekly sales have dropped to around 10,000 units.

The main reason for such "sluggish" sales is that there are too few games on the platform.

Third-party game developers have already extended olive branches to Wujiang Group.

At this time, Wujiang Group embraced third-party game developers with an open attitude. As long as a game is developed on the platform, it must abide by these three rules:

1. The platform takes 80% of the revenue from game cartridges, including the production cost of the game cartridges.

2. All game cartridges are produced, promoted, and sold by Wujiang Group.

3. Exclusive ownership; the game is not allowed to be released on other gaming platforms.

This requirement doesn't actually seem that demanding.

Once the third-party game developer has finished developing the game, they don't have to worry about anything else, which greatly reduces the pressure on game developers.

Unlike Nintendo, game developers have to pay for the production of game cartridges themselves. If the game cartridges don't sell, the game developers will lose a lot of money.

By doing this, Nintendo is essentially shifting the risk to game developers. Regardless of whether your game cartridges sell or not, Nintendo will never lose money; on the contrary, it can profit from the production costs of your game cartridges.

Wujiang Group, however, takes on the risks and pressures themselves, which is far more ethical than Nintendo.

If Nintendo hadn't threatened game developers that their games would be removed from the platform if they joined, there would probably be hundreds of game companies on the platform by now.

Some major game companies would never dare to sever their partnership with Nintendo now, as their interests are too intertwined. Moreover, the FC has tens of millions of users, and it's only available in Japan. Its scale is incomparable.
