In the spring of 1987, Li Zheng, a world-class surgical titan, unexpectedly reborn as a useless doctor at Guang'an County People's Hospital, was publicly announced to be dismissed by the de...
In the inpatient department, inside the surgical office.
Ding Bo, director of Lingnan Township Health Center, found his daughter's attending physician and explained the situation.
"What? You want to transfer your daughter to the emergency room? Dean Ding, did I hear you correctly?"
The attending physician, Guo Weiqiang, was surprised and looked at Ding Bo in disbelief.
Ding Bo nodded slightly and said apologetically, "I'm so sorry. Doctor Li in the emergency department and I are old acquaintances. I'm familiar with his skills. If I had known he was in the emergency department, I would have gone straight to him!"
"Is it necessary to go through so much trouble for an appendectomy? It doesn't matter who does it. Can he make a flower?" Guo Weiqiang curled his lips with a hint of disdain in his tone. He casually put the pen on the medical record and leaned back in his chair.
Ding Bo chuckled, his eyes full of recognition for Li Zheng's medical skills, and said, "I saw the emergency surgery performed by Dr. Li Zheng. It was a beautiful operation, beyond my imagination. I'm sure no doctor in the city hospital could do such a good job!"
Guo Weiqiang couldn't help but laugh and muttered softly: "That's because you haven't seen the world!"
Although the voice was small, Ding Bo still heard it. However, Ding Bo did not care about it, but just frowned slightly.
"Doctor Guo, please quickly complete the transfer procedures!" Ding Bo urged again, with a hint of urgency in his eyes.
Guo Weiqiang snorted coldly, his face somewhat displeased, and said, "There is no precedent for transferring patients from the inpatient department to the emergency department. I have to ask the director first." After that, he stood up and walked towards the director's office.
"Then please hurry up." Ding Bo did not leave the office, but waited there, glancing at the wall clock from time to time.
…
The decoration in the chief surgeon's office is more exquisite than other places in the inpatient department. The solid wooden desk is spotlessly clean and there are several medical charts hanging on the wall.
Wang Jiancheng was sitting behind his desk. When he heard the report from the attending physician Guo Weiqiang, he suddenly sat up straight in his chair, his face full of disbelief.
"What? Did Dean Ding get kicked in the head by a donkey?" Wang Jiancheng stared at Guo Weiqiang.
"He thinks Li Zheng's surgery is much better than yours, so he insisted on transferring!" Guo Weiqiang said truthfully.
Wang Jiancheng was furious, his face flushing red. "Appendectomy is an entry-level surgical procedure. For simple appendicitis without perforation, there's no question of who's superior. It's just a matter of speed!"
"I think Li Zheng promised him two hundred yuan to get it done, so he was determined to go!" Guo Weiqiang added.
Wang Jiancheng took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and said, "Tell him there's no legitimate reason to transfer him to the emergency department, and it's inconvenient. If he insists on transferring, then let him be discharged!"
Guo Weiqiang nodded, turned around and prepared to go out to convey Wang Jiancheng's meaning.
"How many machines did he do this morning?" Wang Jiancheng suddenly asked.
"3! It is said that one more operation will be done in the afternoon because the patient had breakfast and the fasting time for drinking water is not enough!" Guo Weiqiang answered while standing at the door.
"Four appendectomies a day, he's not afraid of being overeating!" Wang Jiancheng snorted coldly, his face full of resentment.
"There are more than four. Ding Bo's daughter will also be operating this afternoon!" Guo Weiqiang thought for a moment and continued, "The emergency department sees about ten patients with appendectomy every day, and there are at least two or three with surgical indications. We used to admit them directly to our department, but today we haven't seen a single one!"
The more Wang Jiancheng listened, the tighter his teeth clenched. His hands were clenched into fists, and his joints turned white from the force.
"I'll go find the dean!" Wang Jiancheng's face was so gloomy that it seemed like water could drip out of it. He stood up and left the office.
…
In the dean's office.
Dean Zhang was sitting at his desk, concentrating on reading the Teachers' Anthology. When he heard a knock on the door, he put down his book, took off his reading glasses, and looked toward the door.
"Come in."
Wang Jiancheng got straight to the point and said urgently, "Director Zhang, Li Zheng is disrupting the normal diagnosis and treatment order of our hospital. You must take care of it, otherwise the hospital will be in chaos!"
Dean Zhang looked at Wang Jiancheng calmly and said, "Oh? Why is he disrupting order?"
Wang Jiancheng was stunned. He wanted to say that emergency rooms shouldn't perform surgeries, but there wasn't any rule prohibiting them. He thought for a moment and said, "Director Zhang, if the emergency room even performs appendectomies, how can we, the surgical department, perform surgeries? And if the emergency room only charges 200 yuan for a surgery, while the inpatient department charges 400 yuan, isn't that putting the hospital at a loss?"
Dean Zhang said earnestly, "Jiancheng, first and foremost, we are doctors and must prioritize our patients. If we can get patients discharged satisfied with our hospital for just 200 yuan, it will greatly enhance our hospital's image. Secondly, if we lower our emergency department costs, we'll see fewer patients. They can do 5 or 8 operations a day, but the inpatient department only does 2 or 3 at most. So, the emergency department creates higher profits."
Dean Zhang took his time, picked up the enamel teacup on the table, unscrewed the lid, and took a sip of Pu'er tea soaked in goji berries. Then he continued, "Third, the surgery department can perform many other surgeries besides the appendix. You can leave the appendix surgery to the emergency department. This will free up more resources for liver and gallbladder, gastrointestinal, and fracture surgeries. These surgeries are more valuable!"
Wang Jiancheng pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses and said coldly, "Director Zhang, can you guarantee that Li Zheng won't get involved in these surgeries?"
Dean Zhang frowned, his expression darkening slightly. He said, "Director Wang, a good blacksmith must be strong himself. Only if you perform surgeries well, cure patients, and keep them satisfied, will you have a steady stream of patients. Your department's treatment level has stagnated over the years, and isn't even as good as when I was director. You need a sense of urgency! Think carefully about how you're going to compete with Li Zheng!"
