In the spring of 1987, Li Zheng, a world-class surgical titan, unexpectedly reborn as a useless doctor at Guang'an County People's Hospital, was publicly announced to be dismissed by the de...
3 pm, small conference room on the 5th floor of Guang'an County People's Hospital outpatient department.
The faded mahogany conference table was covered with dark green velvet. Dean Zhang Dehai sat in the main seat, holding a Hero brand fountain pen in his hand, writing something on a notebook with the lettering "Guang'an County People's Hospital" printed on it.
Hospital executives sat on both sides of the conference table, each with an enamel pot in front of them, wafting the aroma of tea.
"Is everyone here?" Zhang Dehai cleared his throat and put down his pen. "Comrades, we've gathered you all here today to discuss reinstating Dr. Li Zheng."
A murmur suddenly broke out in the conference room. Vice President Wang Jinsong frowned, his fingers unconsciously stroking the cuffs of his gray jacket.
"As everyone knows, a patient with a ruptured spleen came in this morning in critical condition," Zhang Dehai said in a steady, powerful voice. "Based on our hospital's conditions, it was impossible to save him. But Dr. Li Zheng overcame the difficulties, remained calm, and with his superb skills, successfully saved him. And then there's the child with the chopstick stuck in his jaw. Dr. Li Zheng was brave and careful, astutely determining it was a short chopstick, thus avoiding the trouble of transferring the patient to another hospital."
He paused, his eyes sweeping over everyone present. "I was involved in the entire treatment of both patients, and the process was truly remarkable! Li Zheng's performance today was completely different from before! He's back to being a proper doctor. In my opinion, he's a very capable doctor, and our hospital must keep him and give him another chance. Now, everyone, please express your opinions!"
Zhou Donglai nodded slightly and put down the enamel pot. The tea stains left a circle of brown marks on the rim of the cup. "I agree! Li Zheng's condition today reminds me of when he first came to the hospital. He can definitely continue to work in the hospital!"
"Old Zhou, isn't it too early to speak?" Wang Jinsong frowned, tapping his fingers on the table. "Dean Zhang, Li Zheng's alcoholism was a serious problem before. Can we just change a drunk and gambler? The decision to expel him was passed collectively by the Academy Committee. If we change our mindset every day, where will our credibility be?"
Vice President He Jianjun chimed in, "President Wang is right. Once someone starts to act badly, how can they change? Li Zheng has had a lot of medical malpractice experiences before." He flipped open the notebook in front of him. "Last March, he drunkenly prescribed the wrong medication for a patient, causing blood in his stool. In May, he dozed off during surgery and nearly caused a liver rupture. In June... Never mind, I can't finish. If he stays in the hospital any longer, there's no guarantee he'll get into trouble again!"
Vice President and Director of the Nursing Department Liu Xuejuan listened quietly to everyone's speeches.
She wore a lavender sweater, her hair tied up in a bun, looking dignified and elegant. She thought to herself, "Li Zheng is quite a handsome young man. Even though he had acted badly before, many nurses in the hospital still liked him, especially her niece, Lin Xiaomei."
An hour ago, Xiaomei came to me, saying she wanted to work in the emergency room, but I flatly refused. Now it seems that Director Zhang deliberately wanted Li Zheng to go to the emergency room, and Xiaomei should have known it all along. This girl is really devoted. She came back from the city hospital for further training and was supposed to go to the operating room, but ended up going to the surgery department, and now she wants to go to the emergency room again. Is Li Zheng really worth pursuing!
Thinking of this, Liu Xuejuan spoke up, "I think Li Zheng's current condition needs to be observed, and it's not suitable for him to return to clinical duties right away. How about having him go to the supply room first to do the work of sterilizing and packing instruments, and then transfer him back to the clinic once he's completely stable."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Donglai quickly waved his hand in protest: "Director Liu, I know the work of the supply department is important, but once a clinical doctor leaves the clinic, it's difficult to regain their previous state. Besides, with Li Zheng's temper, he definitely doesn't want to go!"
Wang Jinsong frowned. His cousin, Wang Jiancheng, was the head of surgery. If Li Zheng truly became powerful, it would undoubtedly be a threat to his cousin's position. So, he said firmly, "Li Zheng is a very unstable factor. I still insist on expelling him!"
He Jianjun nodded again, agreeing with Wang Jinsong's point of view.
For a moment, the meeting room was in a stalemate. Everyone was silent, with only the ticking of the wall clock. There were two people each in favor and against the proposal, with Liu Xuejuan remaining neutral.
Zhang Dehai watched the scene unfold, feeling somewhat helpless. Each of these men had their own selfish agenda. He took a deep breath and spoke slowly, "I suggest this: send Li Zheng to the emergency room for a three-month observation period. If he performs well, he'll stay; if not, he'll be fired!"
Wang Jinsong frowned at this and was the first to question it. "Director Zhang, is this feasible? This will definitely affect the prestige of the hospital's top management! Besides, shouldn't we consult Director Tang in the emergency department? She might not accept it! And whether Li Zheng is willing to go is still a question."
Zhang Dehai smiled slightly. "I've already done some work on Li Zheng, and he's willing to go. As for Director Tang, I suggest that she attend the meeting and listen to her opinions. If she doesn't want to accept Li Zheng, I won't force her!"
At this moment, Tang Jingqiu was sitting in her office, thinking about discussing Li Zheng's matter with Director Zhang. Suddenly, the phone at the emergency room nurse station rang, and Tang Jingqiu's heart instinctively tightened: Could it be a patient who came to be rescued?
The nurse picked up the phone, hummed and ahed twice, and came to the office door: "Director Tang, Director Zhang wants you to come over for a meeting!"
Tang Jingqiu was delighted and ran upstairs quickly. Pushing open the door of the conference room, she simply greeted everyone.
"Director Tang, please sit down." Zhang Dehai said with a faint smile, "It's like this..."
After hearing Zhang Dehai's proposal, Tang Jingqiu was a bit bewildered at first, then pleasantly surprised. She was still trying to figure out how to convince the hospital leaders to keep Li Zheng, but she hadn't expected them to already have such an idea.
