Rebirth in '82: The Foolish Village Guardian's Mountain Life

Every village would have one or two "village guardians." They were often simple-minded and foolish, yet kind-hearted.

The older generation often said that village guardians came to th...

Chapter 230 The miserable Qiao Zhijie

After the Waking of Insects, spring ploughing officially begins.

After breakfast, Chen Wang and his wife strolled along the way and came to their own fields.

Since someone would be delivering a batch of building materials today, I agreed with Chen Dazhuang yesterday to take a day off at home.

Land is the foundation of farmers' survival.

Especially after the implementation of the policy of dividing land to households, farmers' enthusiasm for work has been greatly improved.

It was just past seven in the morning and the sun was rising slowly in the east, but many villagers were already working in the fields.

There were also quite a few people who had just arrived. They walked past them in a hurry and took the initiative to greet the two of them.

"Hey, Awang, are you taking your wife for a walk in the fields?"

An old man in his fifties or sixties walked by carrying a hoe and said with a smile.

"Well, come and take a look."

Chen Wang smiled and nodded.

"The air here is good. It's nice to take a walk here in the morning."

The old man glanced at Lin Xiuqin's already visibly pregnant belly, smiled and said, "By the way, your wife's belly is getting bigger too, what are your plans for the family's farmland this year?"

"I have already made an appointment with Old Joe and asked him to help farm our fields."

Chen Wang replied with a smile.

"Is that so? Well, I also said that I want to contract your family's fields this year!"

The old man had a regretful expression on his face and quickened his pace towards his fields.

His family's fields are not far from Chen Wang's. He hasn't seen anyone from Chen Wang's family come to tidy up the land in the past few days, so he came up with this idea.

Many people in the village also had similar thoughts because they knew that Chen Wang’s family might not be able to farm today.

"Wife, you have been busy working on our fields for the past two years. Thank you for your hard work."

Chen Wang looked at the old man's hurried back and suddenly said something.

Lin Xiuqin tilted her head to look at him, her eyebrows curved as she tightened her clenched hands.

For her, being able to wait for the life she has now, let alone two years, even if she could hold on for ten years, is worth it.

Soon they arrived at their own fields and saw Old Joe busying around with a hoe.

The first step in spring ploughing is definitely to prepare the land, including but not limited to clearing debris and weeds in the field, and then loosening the soil and plowing the land.

What surprised Chen Wang was that Qiao Zhijie was actually captured and forced to work in the field next door that belonged to Old Qiao's family.

He just looked listless, as if he had not woken up yet. He had no strength to swing the hoe and looked like he might fall down at any time.

"Old Joe, you're here so early!"

Chen Wang greeted him.

Old Joe stopped what he was doing, turned sideways and looked at him, grinning and saying, "It's not early at all. The sun has already come out. We've been here for more than half an hour. Look, we've already made such a big patch."

Rural life is relatively monotonous and boring. People don’t have many entertainment activities these days, and going to bed early and getting up early is the norm.

Especially during the busy farming seasons in spring and autumn, people basically get up before dawn and start the day's work.

“Thank you for your hard work!”

Chen Wang smiled and said.

"Oh! How can this be considered hard work!"

Old Joe smiled and shook his head, then continued to swing the hoe to weed.

Chen Wang looked towards the fields of the old Qiao family, and Qiao Zhijie happened to be lazy and looked at him.

When their eyes met, Chen Wang clearly felt the resentment in Qiao Zhijie's eyes.

If Chen Wang hadn't paid Old Qiao to help with farming, Qiao Zhijie wouldn't have needed to work in the fields.

He hadn't gotten up so early in a long time. Yesterday he played cards with a bunch of friends until midnight and went home. He was sleeping soundly in the morning when Old Joe pulled the quilt off him.

He originally said he didn't want to come at all, but his old mother handed him a belt. Old Qiao took it and whipped him twice, making Qiao Zhijie scream and follow him obediently to the field.

"Brother Jie, good morning!"

Chen Wang greeted him with a smile and called him brother after a long time.

Qiao Zhijie, however, could not be happy at all, and asked loudly and angrily: "Awang, are you setting a trap for me again?"

"What are you talking about?"

Chen Wang pretended not to understand.

"Don't pretend, you did it on purpose. Why did you ask my dad to help you farm? You paid too much money, you deliberately cheated me, right?"

"Come on, you are asking me to help you farm. Isn't it good to give your family an extra income? Believe me, if I shout in the village, many people will rush to take this job!"

"I don't believe you have such good intentions."

Qiao Zhijie curled his lips.

"You bastard!"

Old Qiao cursed and glared at him, "What are you talking about? There is nothing wrong with what Awang said. If you keep on turning your back on me, I will beat you to death when I get back."

Qiao Zhijie shrank his head and muttered something under his breath.

"What are you still mumbling about? Hurry up and work. I tell you, finish at least half of the land over there today, or you won't have any food to eat at home, you lazy bastard!"

Old Joe cursed and threatened.

Qiao Zhijie didn't dare to say anything else and buried his head in his work.

Lin Xiuqin glanced at Chen Wang standing beside her and saw a gloating smile on his face, with a smile on the corner of his lips.

He is the pillar of the family. He is in his twenties, but why does he sometimes still act like a child?

"Why are you still standing here, acting like landlords? If it were a few years ago, you would have definitely gotten into trouble for your behavior."
