Chapter Thirteen: Only You Can Help Me With This (2/2)

Lin Jin smiled slightly and said: It tastes even better. You can eat it yourself. There's still some porridge in the pot. I'll serve you some more when you're done.

After finishing their meal, Lin Jin cleaned up and changed Gong Moze's dressing. It was alright since Gong Moze was unconscious yesterday, but changing the dressing today while he was awake was a bit awkward. Lin Jin tried to untie the gauze as gently as possible, but Gong Moze still couldn't help but gasp in pain.

"I'm sorry," Lin Jin said softly.

"It's okay, you feel much better than yesterday," Gong Moze comforted her.

After changing the dressing, Gong Moze became even more curious about Lin Jin's medical skills: "Your medical skills are so amazing, who did you learn them from?"

Lin Jin paused for a moment, then made up a reason: "When I lived in the countryside, there was an old traditional Chinese medicine doctor living next door. I liked to follow him around, and since he saw that I liked it, he gave me a few medical books and occasionally gave me some guidance."

Gong Moze nodded, seemingly believing but not quite. Then he asked, "We've known each other for two days, and I still don't know your name." Just call me Lin Jin, or like the villagers, call me Lin Zhiqing.

Gong Moze silently recited Lin Jin's name in his heart, and then said:

"Can you do me a favor?" Lin Jin refused without hesitation, "Food and drink are no problem, but I can't do anything else."

"I haven't even said anything yet," Gong Moze said in surprise.

"There's nothing I can do to help. The medicine has been changed, so you should get some rest!" With that, she turned to leave.

“Lin Zhiqing, only you can help me with this. I’m a soldier stationed in the Lvjiang garrison, and this matter is of great importance.” Lin Jin said helplessly. “Tell me,” Gong Moze quickly said, “make a call to the garrison and tell them the time is right to release the animals.” Lin Jin asked again, “Will the people in the garrison believe what I say?” “Just make that call,” Gong Moze replied. “Okay, I’ll make the call!” Lin Jin reluctantly walked towards the supply and marketing cooperative. Only the supply and marketing cooperative in each brigade had a telephone, and it was more than forty minutes away from Yangliu Village.

Oh dear! What a mess this is!

In the days that followed, Lin Jin took meticulous care of Gong Moze, and his injuries gradually improved. One day, a jeep arrived in the village, and several men in military uniforms got out. The captain led them directly towards Lin Jin's courtyard. Hearing the commotion, Gong Moze struggled to his feet to greet them. The leading soldier saluted Gong Moze, "Captain Gong, it's so good you're alright." They were Gong Moze's subordinates. Gong Moze briefly explained the situation and introduced Lin Jin to them. "Comrade Lin, thank you so much for taking care of our captain. Please feel free to ask if you need anything," the officer said gratefully. Lin Jin waved her hand, indicating it was nothing. Afterwards, Gong Moze decided to return to his unit. He looked at Lin Jin, a hint of reluctance in his eyes, "Lin, thank you for taking care of me during this time. If you need anything in the future, you can come to the unit to find me." Lin Jin smiled and replied, "I hope everything goes well for you back in the unit." After Gong Moze got into the car, it slowly drove away. Watching the departing car, Lin Jin felt a strange sense of loss. But she quickly adjusted her mindset; after all, life had to go on. She turned and went back into the house, intending to catch up on the herb-gathering work she had missed and continue her medical research. Perhaps soon she could leave this small village and go out into the wider world to display her talents. Gong Moze announced his departure, as he had other matters to attend to. Although Lin Jin was reluctant to part with him, she still saw him off to the village entrance.
