Chapter Eighteen

Chen Ningsheng lowered his gaze to her face, a hint of disgust flashing in his eyes. "Get away!" He shoved her aside and walked firmly toward the next shop.

"You really don't want to marry me?" Chen Bailing bit her lip and cried out in despair.

These past few days, she'd seen how much he cared for that woman. She'd grown up with him and had never seen him care for anyone like this before. She admitted it, she was just jealous, insanely jealous.

She hoped he would never find that woman, yet she also longed to see her, to know what kind of woman had captivated him so completely.

Tears blurred her vision, and the scene before her gradually became indistinct. Chen Bailing's tears slowly slid down her cheeks as she watched the person's figure gradually disappear into the distance.

"Girl, what's wrong?"

Chen Ningsheng walked a few meters away when he heard a series of exclamations around him. His heart skipped a beat, and he turned around. Behind him, a few meters away, Chen Bailing lay quietly on the ground like a lifeless doll.

Passersby gradually gathered around.

He ran at full speed, pushing through the crowd to reach her. He put one hand behind her neck and the other under her knees, then lifted her up in his arms.

Chen Bailing lay quietly in his arms, her lips devoid of color.

A pang of guilt gripped his heart. Chen Bailing had grown up with him, and he knew her hypoglycemia all too well. He shouldn't have said such harsh words to upset her.

He carried him all the way back to the hotel, then used his elbow to force open the door and rushed into the room.

Ji Bei, who was sitting at the front desk idly reading comics, felt a gust of wind blow past him. Before he could even see the person clearly, he heard a loud bang as the door slammed shut.

He casually looked away, and in the blink of an eye, he saw Xu Xinchen walking down the stairs opposite.

The two were still in a cold war, and he was still angry, so he awkwardly turned his head away and refused to look at her.

Xu Xinchen came to his side, checked the room records of the guests who came in the morning, and checked the accounts before turning her gaze to Ji Bei, "What do you want to eat for lunch?"

Ji Bei didn't speak; the comic book covered his face, making it impossible to discern any expression.

Xu Xinchen found it amusing; he really was just a child, so quick to anger.

She reached out and pushed aside the comic book, revealing Ji Bei's dark eyes, which stared at her intently.

"If you won't say anything, then I'll make you your favorite food?"

Xu Xinchen tentatively asked.

Ji Bei frowned, but stubbornly looked away, his voice tense, "Do you know what kind of food I like to eat?"

"Garlic eggplant, spiced vegetarian chicken slices, almond tofu..." Xu Xinchen rattled off each dish with ease, while Ji Bei's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you a god? How do you know all this?"

"Observational skills, huh?" Xu Xinchen shrugged. "I can guess roughly what you're going to do just by looking at your usual dietary preferences."

Ji Bei's lips unconsciously curved into a smile, and he felt a sweet warmth in his heart. It turned out that she wasn't completely indifferent to him after all. She could guess so many of his preferences, so she really did understand him. But then he thought again, he had already caused a misunderstanding last time, and maybe he would do the same again this time.

A slight pang of sadness welled up in his heart as he gazed at her gentle, warm face.

Is she this kind to everyone?

Does she feel anything special about me?

A lump rose in his throat, and he was about to ask the question when suddenly the table tilted and a man rushed to it. He looked up and saw the man who had checked in just yesterday. Although his face was still calm, a hint of panic was clearly visible in his eyes.

"Where can you find a good doctor around here?"

Chen Ningsheng clenched his fists, already filled with regret. He had thought Chen Bailing just had a normal case of low blood sugar, so he carried her back to the hotel. But who knew that when he put her on the bed, he would find that her temperature was frighteningly high. She was now in a daze, but she was clinging tightly to his clothes, begging him not to take her to the hospital.

She spent several years of her childhood in the hospital, and she has a great fear and aversion to hospitals, so Chen Ningsheng plans to invite a doctor to have a face-to-face consultation.

Ji Bei noticed his anxiety and, without hesitation, put down his comic book. "There's an old man with good medical skills on the west side of the county town. He treated my mother before. I'll take you there."

Only after the two of them rushed out of the hotel did Xu Xinchen emerge from under the front desk, clutching her chest.

Her heart was still pounding. Just moments ago, she saw him immediately crouch down and hide under the table, thus avoiding being discovered.

She felt a sense of relief, but also a faint sense of loss.

He was in such a hurry just now because of that girl, right? That girl is sick, which is why he panicked.

She also felt incredibly ridiculous, going to such lengths to avoid him. Perhaps even if she stood right in front of him, he wouldn't recognize her.

For him, that fleeting affair was utterly insignificant.

........

In the dimly lit room, the white-bearded old man sat on the edge of the bed, looking at Chen Bailing lying weakly on the bed, and pondered for a long time.

"Doctor, how is he/she?"

When Chen Ningsheng saw him get up, he immediately went up to him and asked him what was wrong.

“It’s nothing serious, just a cold. I’ve prescribed some medicine, and she’ll be fine in less than three days. But,” he turned to Chen Ningsheng with a serious expression, “she’s been overthinking things, which has caused liver and spleen imbalances. Plus, she has a weak constitution. We mustn’t upset her during this time.”

Chen Ningsheng was taken aback, remained silent for a long time, and then nodded solemnly, "I understand, doctor."

After seeing the doctor off, Chen Ningsheng pushed open the door and saw Chen Bailing struggling to peek out from under the covers, trying to reach the water in the cup on the table.

He quickened his pace, taking her hand before she could, supporting her body, pulling her close, and bringing the water to her lips. "Drink."

Bar. "

Chen Bailing stared at him without blinking, obediently took two sips, and Chen Ningsheng put her back on the bed and covered her with the blanket.

"You can rest here for the next few days."

He sat down on the chair by the bed.

Chen Bailing stared intently at him with her dark eyes. After a long while, a sweet smile appeared on her lips. "Asheng, this is the first time you've been so kind to me since you went abroad and we separated. It seems I'll have to get sick more often from now on."

"What nonsense are you talking about!" Chen Ningsheng frowned, tucked the blanket up a bit more, and patted her shoulder. "Go to sleep. I'm right next to you. We're not going anywhere."

"You said it yourself. I don't want to go anywhere; the first thing I see when I wake up is you."

After Chen Bailing finished speaking, she blinked and waited for his reply.
