Chapter 102
Lei Tingjun walked to the entrance of the corridor, tore open the band-aid, and carefully applied it to the wound.
Then he raised his hand, tilted his head back, and silently watched for a while.
His expression and those bright, dark eyes made it seem as if he was showing off some incredible treasure, leaving everyone around him completely bewildered.
It's just a band-aid.
It's just a five-cent thing; anyone can afford it.
But they didn't know that it was given to him by the person Lei Tingjun cherished most in his heart.
A few stops later, the elderly couple sitting opposite Ji Wanmei and her friends got off at their stop.
The seats became available briefly, and because it was a very small station and it was past 8 p.m., there weren't many new passengers boarding.
So only one passenger arrived at the two seats opposite them, leaving one empty seat.
Ji Wanmei told Lei Tingjun to sit down for a while, and then get up to let others get on at the next stop.
After Lei Tingjun sat down, he squeezed the passenger who had just gotten off the bus into the window seat.
He was tall and strong, with long arms and legs. The two-person seats were narrower than the three-person seats. Lei Tingjun's long legs were cramped under the small table, which was uncomfortable, and he would also squeeze Ji Wanmei across from him.
So he could only bend over and face the aisle.
Ji Wanmei glanced at his legs; they were far too long.
No wonder he's so strong and walks so fast.
For every step he takes, it's the same as two steps she takes.
Luo Chunyan sat inside by the window, and since she had nothing to do, she started chatting: "Lei Tingjun, are your parents both very tall? How come you're so tall?"
Lei Tingjun doesn't like talking about his parents, and simply replied, "So-so."
Ji Wanmei frowned slightly and nudged Luo Chunyan with her elbow, using this gesture to tell her that talking about other people's deceased parents was very impolite.
There were still some braised dishes left over from the meal.
It's already past eight o'clock. If it's left out for a few more hours, the sauce will start to lose its flavor.
Ji Wanmei opened the bag of braised peanuts, duck carcasses, and chicken feet, placed it on the small table, and said, "These things were bought as snacks anyway. Let's finish them off since we each have a little."
Luo Chunyan picked up a chicken foot and started gnawing on it, her mouth dripping with oil. She said, "I must say, of all the braised dishes at this place, these chicken feet are the best."
Ji Wanmei also offered some to the female passenger who had just boarded the bus across from her. The woman was flattered and thanked her repeatedly. She carefully took a duck carcass and then quietly ate it by the window.
The female passenger was a woman in her thirties, carrying a large black cloth bag, looking travel-worn and exhausted.
I wonder where they're going, catching the train so late.
However, since they were just strangers who had met by chance and were not familiar with each other, Ji Wanmei did not ask.
Everyone has their own life.
Lei Tingjun only peeled a few peanuts. He placed the peeled peanuts on the opposite side of the small table, just within Ji Wanmei's reach.
Lei Tingjun noticed that Ji Wanmei was very clean; she would wipe her hands with a handkerchief every time she ate a little something.
For example, when peeling peanuts, she couldn't stand the brown sap getting into her fingernails, so she always had to wipe it clean before peeling a single peanut.
Lei Tingjun watched silently and found her earnestness somewhat endearing.
He peeled the peanuts for her and placed them beside her.
Ji Wanmei glanced at him with a slight upturn of her lips, then picked up the peanuts he had peeled and put them in her mouth, so she wouldn't have to keep wiping her hands anymore.
Luo Chunyan, munching on a chicken foot, glanced at the two of them in between her busy work, as if she had already gotten used to it, and rolled her eyes as she looked out the window.
The taciturn woman opposite him, after watching Lei Tingjun's rough yet meticulous actions for a while, sighed softly, "Your boyfriend is so good to you."
Ji Wanmei was a little embarrassed.
This is the second passenger sitting next to her who has mistaken Lei Tingjun for her boyfriend.
But actually, the two of them have no relationship at all.
This time, however, Ji Wanmei and Lei Tingjun tacitly refrained from offering any explanation.
Perhaps it was that hug, which was devoid of any ulterior motives, that made their relationship clean and open;
Perhaps it was the woman's expression of despair and sorrow that made Ji Wanmei swallow back the words she was about to say.
The woman looked to be only in her thirties, but her hair was already covered with a dense patch of white hair.
Her hands were very haggard and old, covered with scars, and her eyes had lost the light of hope for life, yet her whole being exuded a kind of tension and vitality, like a final burst of energy before death.
She is a woman whose story is full of complexity.
She simply murmured a sigh to herself, then turned around and stared intently at the scenery passing by outside the window.
Ji Wanmei invited her to eat some more braised food, but the woman kindly shook her head: "Thank you, young lady, I'm not hungry anymore."
Ji Wanmei bought two jin of everything, including braised pork intestines, which she had already shared with rice.
There were still quite a few duck carcasses and braised chicken feet left.
Luo Chunyan couldn't finish all of it by herself. Ji Wanmei and Lei Tingjun didn't really like those two dishes, but they peeled and ate almost all of the braised peanuts.
Ji Wanmei then planned to take these to Officer Li and ask him if he wanted some.
Half an hour later, the train stopped at the next station.
It was a small county station where they stopped along the way, so Ji Wanmei prepared to get up and go find Officer Li.
Since Luo Chunyan was sitting inside by the window, Ji Wanmei, who was sitting near the aisle, took over the task of walking around.
