A daughter from a prominent family is desired by many, yet the daughter of the Yong family is sought by none. Noble families consider her nouveau riche and vulgar, while scholarly houses pride them...
When Zhao Shu arrived at Chensong Courtyard, Prince Yong was already waiting.
Upon seeing Zhao Shu, Prince Yong immediately pulled his daughter aside and muttered, "Why did you let them come?"
“Father, this is the rule.” Zhao Shu smiled and stopped Yong Wang from saying what he was about to say, and personally served him food. “This is the Feathered Immortal Sparrow made by Aunt Xin. Father, please try it.”
Prince Yong took a bite with unease, his expression remaining calm, though he was clearly displeased.
Seeing that Prince Yong was unhappy, Zhao Shu slammed her chopsticks down on the table. "Aunt Xin, is this how you serve my father? What are you up to by feeding him this kind of food?"
Concubine Xin, one of the concubines in the group, knelt down with a thud, saying, "This lowly concubine dares not."
"What else are you afraid of? Can't you see my father is unhappy?" Zhao Shu asked sharply, not giving her time to explain. As the only child in the household, she was always unreasonable.
In the past, she was arrogant because of others' provocations; now she will use that arrogance to get rid of those who are waiting to seize Yongwang Mansion's faults.
It's all because these people always mention our princess to outsiders whenever they go out and meet someone. Our princess has always been spoiled and arrogant.
"You lowly concubine, you lowly concubine..."
"Shut up." She interrupted Aunt Xin and beckoned Green Ivy over. "Go and call Steward Fu here."
Aunt Xin, trembling and frail, cautiously glanced at Prince Yong, who stared blankly at Zhao Shu.
"Your Highness, this lowly concubine dares not be negligent, and hopes Your Highness will investigate thoroughly." Concubine Xin knew that in this palace, only Prince Yong's status was higher than Zhao Shu's, and she dared not offend Zhao Shu, but now she had to save herself.
Upon hearing her words, Prince Yong turned his head, as if seeing her for the first time, glanced at her, and then turned to ask Zhao Shu, "Who is this?"
After asking, she seemed to remember something and suddenly realized that it was Aunt Xin, who was a fairy bird that had ascended to immortality.
Which is more important, the aunt or the daughter?
"It's naturally my daughter," Prince Yong said, ignoring the celestial sparrow and picking up a piece of braised pork trotters made by Aunt Yue. "This is good."
Concubine Yue, one of the concubines, was so surprised she almost shouted out loud. However, she remembered to maintain her ladylike image at all times, so she simply curtsied and said humbly and shyly, "Thank you for your praise, Your Highness. It is my blessing that your cooking skills can make Your Highness happy."
Zhao Shu glared coldly at Aunt Yue, who was all smiles. "Aunt Yue, who taught you manners? I didn't tell you to speak, so why are you spouting nonsense? Did my father give you permission to speak?"
Aunt Yue was stunned, staring blankly at Zhao Shu. What was wrong with the princess today? Why was everything she did wrong?
For no apparent reason, all the concubines were summoned to Chensong Courtyard to serve the prince his meals. Seventy or eighty concubines stood in two long rows, stretching out of Chensong Courtyard and almost reaching the Plum Garden.
"Aunt Yue, kneel down!" Bi Qiao was also startled. She had just returned from outside and was thinking that she should serve the prince his meal soon. But she didn't expect to see a group of alluring concubines standing in two rows in the distance.
A maidservant immediately reported the cause of this phenomenon to her. She suddenly realized that it was the princess. But why was this happening?
Aunt Yue reluctantly twisted the handkerchief in her hand. She glared at Bi Qiao hatefully. "Even the princess didn't make me kneel. What is this lowly servant girl?"
“Aunt Yue has defied her superiors and shown no respect for me or my father. Someone, go and fetch the matchmaker.” As she spoke, Zhao Shu did not forget to serve food to Prince Yong.
"Princess, spare me! Princess, spare me! I will never dare to do it again! I know I was wrong!" When Aunt Yue heard that Zhao Shu was going to find the matchmaker, she panicked immediately, but the prince didn't even glance at her.
At this moment, Aunt Yue felt that her heart had been misplaced. She had thought that entering the Prince's mansion would be like becoming a phoenix on a branch, but little did she know that the Prince was the kind of person who would not recognize someone after sleeping with them.
It doesn't matter who you offend in this Prince's mansion, but you must never anger the Princess, because apart from the Empress Dowager, the Emperor, and the Empress, no one can persuade her, not even the Prince sometimes.
How could she forget? How could she not forget it? How could she have thought that as long as she served the prince well, everything would be fine?
"What are you howling about? If you keep making noise, I'll cut out your tongue and feed it to the dogs." Zhao Shu, who used to need others to provoke her temper before she would explode, took the initiative to say such vicious and domineering words.
Prince Yong ate another bite of food, and upon hearing Zhao Shu's words, he unconsciously frowned. This subtle expression was undoubtedly noticed by Aunt Yue, who hurriedly crawled over on her knees, hugged Prince Yong's leg, and wept bitterly.
"Your Highness, I truly dare not disrespect you and the Princess. All I ever think about is serving you and the Princess well. Heaven and earth can bear witness to my sincerity, Your Highness."
Prince Yong glanced at his daughter, sighed almost imperceptibly, then looked at Aunt Yue, who was crying miserably and wearing a strange name tag. "Ah Jun, let's eat first."
“Okay, but Ah Jun doesn’t like any of these.” Zhao Shu glanced disdainfully at the eighty-nine dishes on the table, each representing a different concubine.
Today, Zhao Shu ordered that each of the concubines must personally cook a dish to express their deep affection for Prince Yong. In order to use the kitchen at the right time, the concubines used all their ingenuity.
This truly gave Zhao Shu a good show, and made her realize that those concubines were the most influential in the household.
Prince Yong asked worriedly, "Is it not to your liking?"
"Ah Jun wants to cook for herself, like the aunties, and be self-sufficient." Zhao Shu looked up, her face full of innocence.
Like many noble ladies of the imperial family, Zhao Shu was arrogant and domineering in front of servants, but she was obedient in front of her elders.
This skill is thanks to the caregivers.
People say that the governesses from the palace are in high demand, and the girls they teach are all dignified, virtuous, chaste, and generous. But they don't know that there is another type of governess in the palace who has a unique trick—praise to death.
