Shen Heng, the village bully of Shili Village, has a fierce and intimidating persona.
To everyone's surprise, his newly wedded little wife is not afraid of him at all. In fact, she keeps ...
Bai Jiaojiao only spends time with Huang Meijuan and has forgotten about Chen Jiancheng.
The two sisters went to the field where Chen Jiancheng was working. Bai Shihai was also working in the same group. They were tidying up the wheat field, preparing to plant a crop of sweet potatoes, which would be everyone's food for the winter this year.
"Why are you two here?" When Bai Shihai saw Bai Jiaojiao and Bai Shiqing coming together, he thought something had happened to his family.
“We’re looking for Jiancheng. Zhuangzhuang has heatstroke, and his wife twisted her ankle while walking. We need him to go back and check on her.”
Bai Shihai felt relieved at the same time, but his heart started to clench again. He shouted to Chen Jiancheng, "Jiancheng, hurry home! Zhuangzhuang has heatstroke!"
Upon hearing this, Chen Jiancheng immediately dropped his hoe and ran home.
Bai Jiaojiao watched Chen Jiancheng's hurried back and thought that since his father had gone back, everything should be alright now.
"Tell me, even we adults can't stand this weather, how can the children not get heatstroke?"
Bai Shihai muttered a few words and told his two younger sisters to hurry back to work.
Because Shen Heng didn't come today, Bai Jiaojiao couldn't finish all the work by herself.
But Chen Hong, unusually, didn't say anything: "If you can't do it, so be it." She'll leave it for her husband to do tomorrow.
Bai Jiaojiao was preoccupied with Zhuangzhuang, so her mind wasn't on the land, and she didn't get a single inch of work done all morning.
Bai Jiaojiao put down what she was holding and went straight to the Chen family to see how Xiao Zhuangzhuang was doing.
Before she even reached the Chen family home, she saw Huang Meijuan carrying a child in her arms, limping along the roadside, her complexion even worse than when she had just seen her.
"Sister Meijuan!"
Everyone is still at work, and Huang Meijuan hasn't met a single person along the way. Her sprained ankle is swollen like a steamed bun, and no one knows how she got through all this.
"Jiaojiao, help! Help me!"
Huang Meijuan's shouts were frightening, and Bai Jiaojiao was startled. She quickly ran over and asked, "What's wrong? Is Zhuangzhuang still not better?"
“My father-in-law won’t give us money to go to the clinic. He insists on using some kind of folk remedy on Zhuangzhuang. He made him drink a bowl of herbal medicine and he stopped crying... Look at him, look at him now, he’s not moving at all! I just went to the health center, and they said he fainted and needs to go to the big clinic in town. What are we going to do…”
Huang Meijuan's hands were trembling as she held Zhuangzhuang.
Bai Jiaojiao quickly said, "Sister Meijuan, don't be afraid. I have a bicycle at home. I'll ride it and give you a ride there."
Zhuangzhuang's body temperature was very high; Bai Jiaojiao could feel the heat even through the swaddling clothes.
Huang Meijuan asked in a tearful voice, "Can you carry us?"
"It's alright, I'm calling for my second sister, please don't worry."
Now Zhuangzhuang is being supported by Huang Meijuan alone.
Bai Shiqing's field was on the way, and Bai Jiaojiao called out to him, so Bai Shiqing came over.
Bai Shiqing's expression darkened as soon as she hugged Zhuangzhuang.
Bai Jiaojiao went home and got five yuan. She handed the car and the money to Bai Shiqing and said, "Second sister, you take them there first. I'll walk there in a bit."
Although this matter had nothing to do with Bai Jiaojiao, since she had run into it, she couldn't just sit idly by. If she didn't go over, she was afraid she would get upset at home.
Chen insisted on giving Zhuangzhuang, who was suffering from heatstroke, a folk remedy. Zhuangzhuang showed no signs of illness, and Chen insisted that the medicine was working and that he just didn't want to spend the money.
Huang Meijuan limped to the health station alone, carrying her child, only to be told that the child had fainted.
Chen Jiancheng was an overly honest man; his father insisted that nothing was wrong, and he believed him.
Huang Meijuan carried Zhuangzhuang out, hoping that whoever she ran into could lend her a few cents to register at the town hospital.
Before she could even open her mouth to Bai Jiaojiao, the other person had already taken out the money.
"Jiaojiao, I really don't know how to thank you."
Huang Meijuan was completely disoriented and kept thanking Bai Jiaojiao and Bai Shiqing.
"You should leave now. Listen to the doctor whether it's medicine or injections. Don't worry about the cost of the child's treatment. You can pay me back later, Sister Meijuan."
Bai Shiqing rode away on her bicycle with Huang Meijuan in tow, while Bai Jiaojiao sighed repeatedly behind them, "What kind of mess is this?"
Bai Jiaojiao only blamed Chen Jiancheng, who, as a father, didn't care about his son at all.
Poor Zhuangzhuang, such a young child, can't even speak yet, so he can't express how much he's suffering.
Bai Jiaojiao thought for a moment, then took another five yuan and put it in her pocket, along with a glass bottle full of water, and hurried towards the town.
It would take several hours to walk to town. Bai Jiaojiao had only gone halfway when she saw Bai Shiqing riding back on his bicycle.
"What's wrong, Second Sister?"
Bai Jiaojiao instinctively felt something was wrong, and when she heard Huang Meijuan crying behind her, her heart skipped a beat.
"The child stopped breathing halfway there, and now..."
As soon as they left the village, Huang Meijuan said that the baby seemed to have stopped breathing. Bai Shiqing rode desperately towards the town. After a while, Huang Meijuan suddenly fell off the bike. Bai Shiqing went over to help her up and touched the baby, which was already hard.
Bai Jiaojiao never expected things to develop this way.
"Let's go back first."
Zhuangzhuang was only two months old, with such a bright future ahead of him, how could he suddenly leave like this?
Not to mention Huang Meijuan, even Bai Jiaojiao found it hard to accept.
Bai Shiqing carried Huang Meijuan and the child back to the village. As they passed Chen Jiancheng's field, she cursed loudly, "Chen Jiancheng, come and see your son!"
Bai Shiqing cried out to herself, tears streaming down her face.
The atmosphere was unsettling to everyone. Bai Shihai ran even faster than Chen Jiancheng. When he reached Bai Shiqing, he confirmed his suspicions with a look in his eyes.
Heatstroke in children is indeed a serious condition, but since the famine a few years ago, in the surrounding villages, unless there are congenital defects, very few healthy children have died young.
