A tragic childhood under the shadow of a stepfather, a desolate love that could never be, a clown-masked man in a late-night alley, the crisp moonlight, and the cold blade.
Oh, and the waiter...
"You mean someone is backing him up?" Wang Shen saw through Liang Zichen's thoughts at a glance.
Liang Zichen nodded. "I think it's true that having something to rely on makes one fearless. However, I also heard from the manager that Acheng and the chef in the restaurant seem to be having a bit of a falling out recently. That chef even threatened to teach him a lesson."
"The chef?" Wang Shen went over the information Liang Zichen had given him in his mind. "Regardless of whether the chef is problematic or not, now that we have this clue, we should investigate him."
Just as Wang Shen finished speaking, the sound of an ambulance siren rang out outside. Soon, a group of people in white coats rushed into the store. Wang Shen waved to Liang Zichen, and the two of them walked over to the injured person.
The attending physician in the crowd squatted down next to the injured person, and after examining the basic injuries, he frowned.
"Should we put the injured person on a stretcher?" a young doctor standing to the side asked the doctor in charge.
"With burns this severe, how can you move it without basic treatment? Is this how your professors taught you in college?" The lead doctor seemed to have a bad temper, scolding the young doctor. Then, the lead doctor waved his hand, and the young doctor immediately understood, bringing over a first-aid kit and some first-aid tools.
Acheng lay on the ground, still conscious, his eyes still open. His gaze was dull, staring blankly at the ceiling, his body covered in red and black welts. During the emergency treatment, Acheng seemed to sense the pain in his body, his body trembling intermittently.
Liang Zichen took a step forward, perhaps intending to ask the doctor about the injured person's condition. However, Wang Shen stopped him from doing so.
"Don't interfere with the rescue, let's see what happens first," Wang Shen reminded Liang Zichen, who finally suppressed his impulse.
Shortly after, the sound of police sirens rang out again outside the restaurant. Several police officers jumped out of their vehicles and rushed to the injured man's side. Seeing Wang Shen standing to one side, they went over to him and greeted him. At this moment, the crowd saw the police, and a sense of unease began to spread through them again. They pointed at the injured man on the ground, then looked at the police, and began to whisper among themselves.
"Clear the area, set up a cordon," Wang Shen instructed Liang Zichen with a serious expression. Liang Zichen nodded and divided the police officers into two groups. One group was responsible for clearing out irrelevant people from the restaurant, while the other group was responsible for setting up a cordon and securing the scene. In no time, apart from the man and two women who witnessed the entire fire, all the diners in the restaurant had been cleared out.
"Officer Wang, how am I supposed to do business now that you've done this?" Restaurant manager Han Lin ran up to Wang Shen and complained with a worried look on his face.
"Manager Han, I'm truly sorry, but I was just doing my job. Who told this to happen in your store? Nobody wants something like this to happen, right?" Wang Shen forced a smile at Han Lin. Hearing Wang Shen's words, Han Lin knew there was no room for negotiation and could only stand quietly to the side.
At this moment, the lead doctor stood up from the ground. He glanced at the people around him, waved his hand, and signaled them to gently lift the injured person onto the support frame.
"Hello doctor, I'm Wang Shen. Our police station should have contacted your hospital, so I'd like to know the basic situation of this injured person." Wang Shen blocked the way of the doctor in charge.
The lead doctor frowned, glanced at Wang Shen, and said, "My time is the patient's life; I can't waste it here with you."
"Hey, how dare you talk like that?" Liang Zichen, standing to the side, felt his anger rise upon hearing the doctor's rude words.
Wang Shen waved his hand, immediately stopping Liang Zichen from saying anything more. The lead doctor glanced at Liang Zichen, then at Wang Shen, and turned to walk towards the ambulance.
Wang Shen followed behind the lead doctor and asked, "My question won't take up much of your time. Is the patient's injury serious?"
"It's serious," the lead doctor replied hastily, then jumped into the ambulance and left with it.
"Zichen, have the bureau contact the hospital to collect and preserve the remaining clothing of the injured person as evidence. You take care of this."
After listening to Wang Shen's words, Liang Zichen nodded and left Wang Shen's side. Wang Shen watched the ambulance speed away in silence for a while, then returned to the accident scene. Wang Shen crossed the police line and walked straight towards the private room where the accident had occurred.
"Captain Wang." The police officer in charge of handling the scene greeted Wang Shen as he approached.
"What about the other three people?"
"They've already been taken to the police station to give a statement."
Wang Shen nodded.
"Manager Han, please come here for a moment." Wang Shen took a half step back and waved to Han Lin, who was not far away. When Han Lin saw Wang Shen beckoning to him, he jogged over to Wang Shen's side.
Wang Shen put on the plastic gloves and took the sealed glove from the policeman beside him. "Manager Han, do you recognize this glove?" Wang Shen held the glove up in the air and placed it in front of Han Lin.
Han Lin adjusted his black-rimmed glasses, leaned closer, and bent down to examine the gloves carefully. "I recognize them. These are the gloves used when serving the flaming chicken." He then tried to straighten up. But he bent down again halfway, bringing his glasses close to the gloves for a closer look.
"No, these gloves seem a bit different from the gloves we use in our store," Han Lin said, shaking his head with a puzzled look on his face.
"Are you sure these gloves are different from the ones you use in your store?" Wang Shen was surprised by Han Lin's words; this outcome was unexpected. Wang Shen had initially thought the gloves had been doused with gasoline, but he hadn't realized that the gloves themselves were actually damaged.
"Hmm, I think I can confirm it." Han Lin stared at the gloves in Wang Shen's hand for a couple more seconds. "Officer Wang, wait here, I have spare gloves in my shop. I'll go get them and show them to you." After saying this, Han Lin dashed out of the private room.
Wang Shen waited in the private room for quite a while before Han Lin finally ran back, panting. "Manager Han, it took you a while to get this pair of gloves."
Han Lin stopped in front of Wang Shen, took a breath, and said, "Officer Wang, I'm so sorry. This dish is now being prepared by A-Cheng alone. So no one else needs these gloves. Over time, these gloves were just carelessly discarded in the storage room. That's why I searched for quite a while before finding this pair." Han Lin swallowed and handed the gloves to Wang Shen.
"These gloves... are a little different."
