A tragic childhood under the shadow of a stepfather, a desolate love that could never be, a clown-masked man in a late-night alley, the crisp moonlight, and the cold blade.
Oh, and the waiter...
"I'm afraid Qi Huan just can't get used to these things," another roommate said sourly.
Qi Huan smiled and said, "I don't have anything planned for tonight, and I'd like to relax a bit. Let's go together."
"Okay, let's get ready and head out quickly, or we'll be waiting in line forever." Qi Huan's roommate clapped lightly, and then the girls busied themselves in the dorm. Even though it was just going out for hot pot, they still had to dress themselves up in a way that made them at least satisfied.
The hot pot restaurant they chose was indeed very popular; even before nightfall, there were already several people waiting outside. Qi Huan took a number at the door, and it wasn't long before it was their turn.
Qi Huan and her friends chose a seat at a window and sat down. As soon as they sat down, a waitress placed the menu in front of them.
"This is our menu, you can take a look first," the waitress said.
Qi Huan and the others felt the voice was very familiar. They looked up and were surprised to see Sima Chu standing in front of them. At this moment, Sima Chu hadn't realized that the person he was serving was his roommate; he was engrossed in writing what he was doing.
"Eighteen, it's you!" A roommate exclaimed without hesitation, his face showing a mixture of surprise and joy.
At this moment, Sima Chu stopped what he was doing and looked up at his three roommates sitting in front of him. Sima Chu's expression was a little awkward, but soon a smile appeared on his face. "Yes, I work here."
"What a coincidence," another roommate remarked. "You've been turning down our invitations all along, so you've been working here all along."
"No, not exactly." Sima Chu lowered his head silently and replied softly.
"Alright, let's order first. Xiao Chu, why don't you recommend some of our specialties?" Qi Huan interrupted their conversation, smiling at Sima Chu.
"Okay," Sima Chu replied, immediately flipping through the menu on the table. "This beef is good, this lamb is good too, and this one as well." Qi Huan saw Sima Chu looking serious as he flipped through the menu, his finger gliding over each dish name.
"Hey, Xiao Chu, since you work at this store, could you give us a discount?" Sima Chu was halfway through his recommendation when one of his roommates interrupted him with a smile.
"This is not available." Sima Chu stopped flipping through the menu, lowered his head again, and spoke in an even softer voice.
"Xiao Ye, you're joking with Xiao Chu again." Qi Huan pretended to be angry and glanced at her roommate beside her, then looked at Sima Chu jokingly. "Xiao Chu, your recommendation must be right. Let's order the dishes you recommended earlier. As for the hot pot base, we'll have a half-and-half pot." Qi Huan closed the menu in front of her, handed it back to Sima Chu, and smiled at him.
Sima Chu nodded, then turned and left their table.
"You guys went a bit too far. She's your roommate, after all, and she didn't do anything to wrong you." Qi Huan had never really approved of her roommates' treatment of Sima Chu, but she had always held back. This time, however, Qi Huan couldn't hold back any longer.
"If she were a little more clean and sociable, we wouldn't be in this situation." Qi Huan's roommate, sitting opposite her, shrugged and chuckled, expressing her helplessness.
"You guys are really talking without understanding the situation. If you could live more comfortably, who would want to scrimp and save and grovel?" Qi Huan sighed, looking at her two roommates.
"Sigh, we should be the ones saying that to you." Qi Huan's roommate, sitting opposite him, pouted and exchanged a glance with another roommate before sighing.
Qi Huan smiled and shook his head.
Before long, all the dishes Qi Huan and her friends had ordered were served. Sima Chu was responsible for serving tea and water throughout the meal. After the food arrived, Sima Chu's demeanor seemed to change drastically. She had been noticeably shy when ordering, but after the food was served, her expression was much more relaxed. Everyone enjoyed the meal. After the meal, Qi Huan parted ways with her two roommates because she needed to go to a nearby bookstore to buy books.
Qi Huan was always envied by many. Some envied her beauty, some envied her wealth, and some envied her excellence. In short, the envious gazes were all the same, only the reasons differed. But in Qi Huan's heart, she still couldn't feel the happiness these people spoke of. Qi Huan walked out of the bookstore, a book on advanced interpreting in her hand, and walked alone along the tree-lined path. She had walked this path many times, always alone. Perhaps only the moonlight on a clear day, an umbrella in the rain, the chirping of insects in summer, and the falling leaves in autumn could accompany her. Qi Huan carried too much on her shoulders. Every time she heard praise or saw envious glances, it was a pressure for her. This invisible pressure forced Qi Huan to constantly move forward, and she could never lose.
Qi Huan gazed at the moon as she walked alone back to her school. At that moment, the road ahead began to bustle. A large crowd had formed a circle, seemingly concealing some alluring secret. However, none of this piqued Qi Huan's interest. She approached the circle, then slowly moved away.
"It looks like a female college student from that university up ahead," someone shouted from the crowd.
Qi Huan stopped and turned to look at the crowd. Then, he walked to the edge of the crowd, apologizing as he slipped into the throng. A female college student was lying on the ground, wearing clothes that Qi Huan recognized. Qi Huan took two more steps forward, then knelt down and turned the student's face towards him.
"Xiao Chu, what's wrong?" The person lying on the ground was actually Sima Chu. Qi Huan half-squatted down and helped Sima Chu up, calling his name twice. But Sima Chu didn't respond. Qi Huan checked Sima Chu's breathing, then took out her phone and dialed the emergency number. Soon after, an ambulance with its colored lights on arrived beside Sima Chu. Two doctors jumped out, lifted Sima Chu onto a stretcher, and then put him in the ambulance.
Qi Huan got into the ambulance and stayed by Sima Chu's side. The ambulance drove smoothly and arrived at the hospital in no time. Soon after, Sima Chu finally regained some strength and slowly opened his eyes.
"Where is this?" Sima Chu glanced around at the surroundings and then asked Qi Huan in a low voice.
"This is a hospital." Qi Huan sat by the bed and happily replied when she saw that Sima Chu had woken up.
"Hospital? How did I get here? I remember I was just about to go back to school." Sima Chu patted his head lightly, seemingly suffering from a temporary amnesia.
