Chapter Ninety-Six: Comparing People

"Don't you remember?" Qi Huan smiled again. "You fainted back then, and if someone hadn't shouted 'You might be a college student from the university up ahead,' I would have missed you. Later, I called an ambulance and brought you to the hospital."

After hearing Qi Huan's words, Sima Chu's expression suddenly darkened again. Qi Huan didn't know what she had said wrong, and so, the two fell into a brief silence once more.

"Sister Huan." Sima Chu looked up at Qi Huan and called her name softly.

"Hmm?" Qi Huan responded with a smile.

"Does an ambulance cost money? When my brother was sick before, my parents took him to a big city for treatment, and they called an ambulance once in the city. My parents said that calling an ambulance is particularly expensive, is that right?" Sima Chu's voice trembled slightly as he said these words.

Qi Huan finally understood the anxiety and unease in Sima Chu's expression; it all boiled down to money. It made sense; how could a girl who couldn't even afford a proper meal not worry about these expenses?

"And another thing." Before Qi Huan could answer, Sima Chu continued with his questions. "Is hospitalization very expensive? How much does a bottle of this glucose you mentioned cost?" Sima Chu's voice grew softer and softer, and he even lowered his head silently at the end.

Qi Huan didn't know how to answer her questions. Because Qi Huan genuinely didn't know how much these fees amounted to. In Qi Huan's opinion, this money shouldn't be something that caused her to waste her time considering.

"Sister Huan, I'm sorry, I've never been to a hospital before." Seeing Qi Huan fall silent, Sima Chu apologized to Qi Huan by counting on his fingers.

"Xiao Chu, have you ever fainted before?" Qi Huan came to her senses and asked Sima Chu.

Sima Chu nodded upon hearing Qi Huan's question. "It happened before, mostly on my way to school. Sometimes I'd wake up on my own, and sometimes someone would find me and help me home." After saying this, Sima Chu looked up at Qi Huan and smiled.

"Don't you ever go to the hospital when you faint?" Qi Huan asked, somewhat surprised, after Sima Chu finished speaking.

Sima Chu smiled and shook his head. "There are no hospitals in our area, only clinics. Besides, I've never been to a clinic."

"Aren't your parents worried about your health?" Qi Huan frowned slightly and continued to ask.

Upon hearing Qi Huan's question, Sima Chu was momentarily at a loss for words. He first shook his head, then nodded. "They were worried. But as time went on, they realized that this ailment didn't have any particular impact on me, so they were relieved." After saying this, Sima Chu looked up at Qi Huan and gave a forced smile.

"Besides, my brother has never been in good health. My parents are always busy taking care of him, so I don't want them to worry about my little ailment." Seeing that Qi Huan didn't answer, Sima Chu added to himself.

Sima Chu's life was far removed from Qi Huan's understanding. There were many things about him that Qi Huan couldn't comprehend: his obsession with money, his neglect of his health, and the love parents have for their children. Only now was Qi Huan gradually realizing that many people and things in this society are filled with helplessness. Qi Huan was dissatisfied with her life, but she still had the right to change it. But some people rarely even have that right.

"It's alright, I know the doctors at this hospital, it won't cost you anything," Qi Huan replied with a smile, looking at Sima Chu. But as soon as the words left her mouth, even Qi Huan herself couldn't believe such a clumsy excuse.

Sima Chu stared at Qi Huan for a while, then said thank you again.

"Actually, I know perfectly well how they see me," Sima Chu said with a smile, uttering a seemingly nonsensical statement.

"Them?" Qi Huan sighed silently. "You don't need to worry about them too much, they don't mean any harm."

“I know,” Sima Chu nodded. “I was really surprised to see you guys at the hot pot restaurant. I was also taken aback when Xiao Ye asked me if there were any discounts. Because there really weren’t any discounts unless I paid out of my own pocket. But…” Sima Chu paused for a moment and then continued, “But I really don’t have any money, so I’m very grateful to you for helping me out. I feel like I owe you a lot.”

Qi Huan shook her head after hearing Sima Chu's words. "No, it was nothing at all."

Upon hearing the words "it was just a small favor," Sima Chu looked up at Qi Huan for a long time, his envy impossible to conceal. That night, both Qi Huan and Sima Chu were deeply moved. Later, Qi Huan received a phone call and hurriedly left, leaving Sima Chu alone, staring blankly at the glucose drip above his head.

"Hey, Xiao Chu, why didn't you go back to the dorm last night? Is something wrong?" As soon as Sima Chu opened the dorm door early in the morning, Xiao Ye looked at him with surprise and asked a question full of gossip.

"No," Sima Chu replied simply, without offering any further explanation.

Just as the roommates were still enjoying themselves, their phones all received a mass text message.

"Our university recently launched a career planning competition. Each department submitted outstanding entries, which, after a university-level selection process, will participate in the National College Student Career Planning Competition. The university-level selection process will last for two weeks. Please prepare actively for the competition..."

"A career planning competition," Xiao Ye said, staring at her phone.

"It's pointless to participate in this kind of competition; we'll just be cannon fodder." The one speaking now is Xiaoqing, Qi Huan's fourth roommate.

"What?!" Xiao Ye exclaimed indignantly. "Look closely at the end. There's a prize money for winning the national first prize, and it's not a small amount. They'll also support your entrepreneurial plans based on your career development. Look, look, the school is encouraging us to participate. If you win the school-level first prize, you get a prize!"

"Xiao Ye, come here." Xiao Qing waved to Xiao Ye from in front of the mirror.

Xiao Ye didn't understand what Xiao Qing wanted to do, but she still went over.

Xiaoqing hugged Xiaoye tightly and turned Xiaoye's face towards the mirror. "Yezi, do you look beautiful in the mirror?" Xiaoqing asked with a smile, looking at Xiaoye in the mirror.

"It's alright, a little less beautiful than Xi Shi. If I were to put on some makeup..." Xiao Ye replied shyly, touching her face with one hand.

"My God, you really dare to say that." After hearing Xiao Ye's words, Xiao Qing shook her head like a rattle drum.

"What's wrong? What college students lack these days is confidence." Xiao Ye glanced at Xiao Qing defiantly, then continued to admire her own beauty in the mirror.

"Honey, that's not confidence, that's a complete lack of self-awareness," Xiaoqing bluntly poured cold water on your enthusiasm. "Then let me ask you again, who's prettier, you or Qi Huan?"

“Her,” Xiao Ye replied, pouting.

"Who's richer, you or Qi Huan?"

"she!"

"Who is more popular, you or Qi Huan?"

"It's her again! But so what?" Xiao Ye looked at Xiao Qing angrily.

"So, it's hopeless!" Xiaoqing shook her head and went into the bathroom.
