A tragic childhood under the shadow of a stepfather, a desolate love that could never be, a clown-masked man in a late-night alley, the crisp moonlight, and the cold blade.
Oh, and the waiter...
"Captain Li, what brings you to the scene today?" Wang Shen smiled and shook hands with the traffic police captain.
"Hey!" Captain Li sighed, frowning as he looked at the dead man on the ground, then at the truck not far away, and then surveyed the intersection. "Brother, you really don't know, this place has the highest traffic accident rate in the whole city. Every now and then, some accidents, big or small, happen. Even I find it weird."
"Are there frequent traffic accidents at this intersection?" Wang Shen didn't come to this road often, but after hearing what Captain Li said, he turned around and looked around the intersection, carefully observing the surrounding terrain. Before long, Wang Shen had a clue why traffic accidents were so frequent here. "Captain Li, it's probably because the angle of view wasn't well considered when this road was designed."
“Who says otherwise? You truly are a legend in the police force, you saw right through it. When this intersection was built, the curve was too sharp, and there are dense buildings on both sides, which obstructs the view of drivers on both sides. When a car is traveling at high speed, it is very easy to cause an accident.”
"Once this problem was discovered, didn't you try to find a way to improve it?"
“We have indeed come up with some solutions. Look over there.” Team Leader Li stepped out of the crowd and pointed to the large convex mirror standing at the intersection. This mirror, also known as a wide-angle mirror, is designed to increase the driver’s field of vision, making it easier for them to observe pedestrians and vehicles on the other side when turning.
"Even with this wide-angle lens, there's no way to improve the high incidence of traffic accidents?" Wang Shen looked at the wide-angle lens. Sunlight shone on the mirror, making the surface reflect a faint silver light.
"This mirror has been installed for a while now, and its effect is quite obvious. Although there are still occasional minor traffic accidents, the accident rate and severity have decreased significantly compared to before. I never expected that someone would die again today." Captain Li sighed again, glanced at the man squatting on the ground, then looked at the large characters "Wuxianda Transportation Company" on the truck next to him, and frowned heavily.
"By the way, Captain Li, may I go and see the person who was hit?" Wang Shen asked, pointing to the dead man lying on the ground.
"Captain Wang, you're still handling this?" Captain Li looked at Wang Shen in surprise. "Sure, but the doctor just concluded that the person is beyond saving." After saying that, Captain Li led Wang Shen to the deceased's side. A staff member nearby brought a white sheet, intending to cover the deceased. Wang Shen waved his hand at the staff member and squatted down beside the deceased himself.
Wang Shen noticed his footing and took a half-step to the side to avoid stepping into the pool of blood. The deceased was a woman, reportedly struck head-on by a freight truck, suffering internal organ damage and massive bleeding, as well as severe bruising to her skin. The front of the truck was still stained with her blood. The woman was wearing a long, strappy dress; she must have been quite attractive when she was alive. But none of this was what Wang Shen wanted to investigate. Wang Shen had come in to examine the body because he had glanced at the deceased from the outside and thought she resembled someone. Wang Shen shifted his position and asked the doctor for a pair of medical gloves. The woman's face was covered in blood, and her hair was scattered across her cheeks. Wang Shen looked closely, and as he had guessed, the deceased was indeed "Sang," the hostess who worked with Zheng Wu!
Wang Shen stared at the deceased's face for a while, his expression gradually becoming solemn. For a detective who had handled numerous major cases, the first reaction to death was "suspicion." Suspicion of what? Suspicion of all possibilities of homicide, then ruling them out, and finally arriving at an accurate conclusion. Wang Shen shifted his gaze from Sang's face and turned it to the driver who caused the accident.
Wang Shen stood up from beside Sang, slowly walked to the driver who caused the accident, squatted down, and patted the driver on the shoulder. The driver hugged his shoulders, his body trembled slightly, and looked up at Wang Shen, his eyes bloodshot.
"Don't be nervous. Do you want a cigarette?" Wang Shen reassured him, took a cigarette out of his pocket, handed it to the driver, and lit it for him.
The driver shakily brought the cigarette to his lips, took a few deep drags, and then suddenly coughed violently. Holding the cigarette between his fingers, he tore at his hair with both hands, tears welling in his eyes, his expression even more pained than before. "Officer, how many years will I get? Officer, I can't go to jail, my whole family depends on me for food. Officer, I didn't mean it, I really didn't mean it, please, please spare me!" Suddenly, the driver grabbed Wang Shen's sleeve, crying and pleading.
“I can’t guarantee anything to you right now. The verdict depends on the on-site investigation. However…” Wang Shen glanced at the driver’s haggard face and paused. “How long has it been since you’ve had a good night’s sleep?”
The driver looked at Wang Shen, released his grip, stopped coughing and pleading, and took a few more deep drags on his cigarette. "I've been transporting goods these past two days, so I haven't had much rest," the driver admitted honestly, explaining his situation over the past two days. Team Leader Li was also listening nearby, taking basic notes in his notebook.
"You're driving while fatigued," Wang Shen said softly, sounding a bit helpless.
"I have no choice," the grown man cried on the roadside. After crying for a while, the driver wiped away his tears and continued, "My child is seriously ill, and my wife has run off with someone else. If I don't work hard to earn money, my child's life will be in danger. You city people with respectable jobs would never know how hard it is for us migrant workers."
