Oh, and the waiter...

Chapter Twenty-One: Flaws in the Data

“Alright, now answer a few simple questions. Let’s start with Sang’s accusations against you.” Wang Shen gestured to the policeman standing next to Zheng Wu, asking him to pour Zheng Wu a glass of water. “Did Sang know about your rape of Han Mo and the murder of Han Shuang? Did you tell her these things yourself?”

Zheng Wu frowned, the straight scar on his face curving slightly. He lowered his head, his expression somewhat dejected. "To be honest, I don't know why she treated me like this. To be honest, I was really good to her. Yes, what man isn't lustful? But I treated her with sincerity, so how could she..." Zheng Wu didn't answer Wang Shen's question, but instead expressed his resentment towards Sang's behavior.

“Please answer my question directly. I’m asking if you told Sang those two accusations against you yourself?” Wang Shen immediately stopped Zheng’s emotional outburst.

“I already said it back then, that thing about Han Mo, I did tell her. But I don’t remember saying anything about killing Han Shuang. You know, when it involves my life, how could I just make things up?” Zheng Wu picked up the glass on the table and took a big gulp of water. “But, to be honest, I like to drink. When I’m drunk, I do talk nonsense, so I can’t be sure what I actually said to her.”

"How much do you know about Sang's background?" Wang Shen had already picked up his notebook and pen.

"Her?" Zheng Wu frowned and thought for a while, then shook his head. "Now that you mention it, I really don't know anything about her. I met her at that bar; she sold alcohol there. Well, that's all I know."

Wang Shen nodded, tapped his pen on the notebook, and closed it. "Okay, that's enough for today. I'll come back if I need anything." With that, Wang Shen got up and left the interrogation room.

"Um, you have to plead with the judge for me!" Zheng Wu shouted hoarsely from his chair.

Wang Shen sat in the car, his mind replaying every detail of Sang's traffic accident. Since the accident occurred so close to Zheng Wu's arrest, Wang Shen instinctively suspected it wasn't an accident. However, in every murder case, regardless of the plausibility of the motive, the killer always has a motive. Wang Shen's visit to Zheng Wu was to find the motive behind Sang's murder. Assuming Zheng Wu hadn't mentioned killing Han Shuang to Sang, how did Sang learn of this information? The person who provided this information clearly aimed to ensure Zheng Wu received his due punishment. And this person, to prevent Sang from exposing them later, chose the most direct method. Many criminals with similar motives firmly believe that only the dead don't speak. Following this line of reasoning, who most wanted Zheng Wu to receive his due punishment? And who would have revealed that crucial information to Sang, thus setting the stage for Zheng Wu's demise?

"No way." Thinking this, Wang Shen muttered to himself and shook his head. He started the car and picked up his phone while driving.

"Yes, yes, I need the files of these two people. I'll send you their basic information shortly, and I'll check it out. Thank you so much. Okay, okay." Wang Shen contacted the records center, hoping to find the basic files of the driver who caused the accident and Sang there.

Before long, the car pulled into the archives center. Wang Shen headed straight for the archives section.

"Team Leader Wang, I've prepared everything you asked for." As soon as Wang Shen pushed open the door to the archives department office, Section Chief Xu stood up and handed Wang Shen two file folders.

Wang Shen thanked them, found a table in the archives office, and began to look through the files of the driver who caused the accident and Sang.

The driver, surnamed Wu, is an outsider temporarily residing in the city and owns no property. His family structure is simple; his parents are alive and live in a remote rural area. His marital status is listed as married, and he has one daughter. His employer is indeed Wuxianda Transportation Company. These details are consistent with the driver's account.

Sang's file was even simpler. Sang was a local resident, but owned no property, both parents were deceased, and she had no other social connections. The occupation field was also blank.

Wang Shen looked at the files, gently rubbing his temples, but still had no clue.

"What's wrong, Captain Wang? You've run into another tricky case?" Section Chief Xu poured Wang Shen a cup of tea and asked with a smile.

Wang Shen took the teacup and gave a wry smile.

"It's alright, what case can't Captain Wang solve?"

"Alright, Section Chief Xu, thank you for your help this time. I have other things to attend to, so I won't stay any longer." Wang Shen put down his tea and handed the file folder back to Section Chief Xu.

"Okay, okay, you're busy." Section Chief Xu smiled and watched Wang Shen leave.

Wang Shen suddenly remembered what the driver had said. The driver had driven so recklessly mainly because his daughter was seriously ill and he urgently needed money for her treatment. If that were the case… Wang Shen picked up his phone and called the colleague in charge of data tracking, requesting that they find the hospital where the driver's daughter had been treated and her medical records. Furthermore, Wang Shen also requested that they find all financial transaction records between the driver and Sang.

After finishing the call, Wang Shen sat in his car, rolled down the window, and lit a cigarette. Wang Shen rarely smoked, but with so many cases he handled, he inevitably came into contact with some of the darker aspects of humanity and society. Cigarettes became the best way for him to regulate his emotions.

Wang Shen took a nap and felt much better. He picked up his phone and saw a missed call. He immediately called back. "Okay, thanks for your help. Send these things to my email."
