Chapter 17 Century-Old Tea Tree

I enjoyed a bunch of grapes while sitting under a big tree. The grapes were very sweet, with no sourness at all, and perfectly ripe. Apart from being a little small, they were perfect.

After resting for a while, Chen Hong continued walking forward. After crossing a hill, Chen Hong suddenly discovered more than a dozen tea trees. The tea trees grew on a small hillside, backed by the mountain wall. From a distance, their leaves were glossy blackish-green and very vigorous.

Chen Hong walked over, plucked a tender leaf, and chewed it. It was fragrant and rich with a long-lasting sweet aftertaste. It was a good tea variety. She would transplant two trees. She never let a good one go. Chen Hong's greedy nature kicked in.

While I was observing which tree to dig up, I suddenly looked up and noticed two tea trees, each as thick as a calf, growing on a rock face four meters above the ground. To grow that thick, they must be at least a hundred years old.

Judging from the situation, the dozen or so tea trees under the stone wall should be the descendants of those two old tea trees. It is said that the tea leaves from the old trees are the best and most fragrant. Chen Hong's greed was aroused again.

Putting the hoe and machete into her spatial storage and re-tying her trouser legs, Chen Hong quickly climbed towards the tea tree. She kicked down any loose rocks along the way, steadily reaching the vicinity of the tea tree. Just as she was about to approach, she noticed a pair of eyes staring at her, and a cold sweat immediately broke out all over her body.

Upon closer inspection, lo and behold! It turned out to be a pheasant neck snake, scientifically known as the tiger keelback snake. It is highly venomous, with a bluish-green body and red spots on its neck, and it loves to perch on trees.

Chen Hong breathed a sigh of relief, broke off a tree branch next to him, picked up the snake and slammed it against the stone wall. After a few slams and flicks, the snake was no longer moving.

He used a branch to pry the snake close, grabbed its tail, and shook it vigorously. He then pulled out a machete and flattened the snake's head. The snake was thoroughly dead. With a forceful flick, he sent it flying far away.

"You scared me half to death! In broad daylight, instead of finding a shady place to hide, you come out here to die. It's disgusting!" Chen Hong wiped her hands with moss from the stone wall and stepped onto the small platform where the tea trees grow.

After checking to see if there were any more snakes or insects, I observed how to dig out the two tea trees in the least strenuous way.

These two old tea trees are as thick as a calf, with a crown diameter of two meters and a distance of one meter between them. Because they grow on a rock face, there is only a little soil around their roots, which are directly embedded in the rock.

After a century of growth, the roots had carved wide gaps into the stone wall. These gaps were filled with solid soil and gravel. To move these two tea trees, the gaps would have to be widened so that the roots could be pulled out.

Chen Hong stomped hard on the stone platform beneath her feet and could feel it shake slightly. It seemed that breaking the stone should work.

First, use a machete to hollow out the gravel and soil under the tree roots along the cracks in the rocks. Then, insert a hoe and pry it open with force, and a large amount of rock will fall down with a crash.

Seeing that the tree roots were still very deep, Chen Hong continued to dig the soil with a machete. When he couldn't dig any further, he pried it open. When he couldn't pry it open anymore, he found a cone-shaped granite stone to stuff into the gap, picked up a large rock and smashed it up. With a crash, another large piece of rock cracked and rolled down the rock wall.

After working like this for two hours, Chen Hong was exhausted and covered in sweat. She shook the tea tree and said, "Hehe, it finally moved. You little brat, I've flattened the mountain for you, and you still can't be moved?"

Chen Hong gripped the tree trunk tightly with both hands and shook and pulled with all her might. The gravel and soil under the roots rolled down, and finally Chen Hong pulled out a tree.

The tree roots are so long that the lower half of the main root extends all the way into the small tea grove below the rock wall. "No wonder you can survive for so many years even without soil here. So that's how you transport nutrients over long distances."

Chen Hong threw the tea tree off the stone wall, first leaving 30 centimeters of secondary roots and hairy roots, then cutting off the rest, and cutting the main root later.

Once one tree was dug out, digging out the one right next to it was much easier. The cracks in the rocks had already been opened and loosened, and the loose stones and soil had been cleared away. After soaking it in the same way, it took another half hour to dig out the second tree.

After throwing the tea tree off the rock face, Chen Hong put away her tools, grabbed a main root of the tea tree with one hand, and climbed down while pulling it out, safely reaching the ground amidst the clattering and rolling of loose stones.

He took out a machete, left about a meter of the main root, cut it off, and put the two tea trees into his space. He then went into the space, lay down on the grass, and rested for a while, panting heavily.

After resting, I quickly left the space. "No, there's still work to be done. I have to pick such good tea leaves, stir-fry them, and taste them to compare with the tea leaves produced on the mother tree."

"Little woman, love to work. Labor is the most glorious thing, and happiness is in your heart. Being able to work is very useful. Whether you become a dragon or a worm in the future depends on whether you work hard in your daily life."

Deep in the mountains, Chen Hong's hands flew as she quickly picked tea leaves, singing loudly. For some reason, Chen Hong felt that only this children's song was most appropriate for the moment.

After spending more than an hour picking three baskets of tea leaves, each basket weighing at least forty pounds, Chen Hong sat on a rock and rubbed her fingers vigorously. "I can't do this anymore, my fingers are going to cramp!"

Seeing that there were still three saplings left to be picked, Chen Hong said reluctantly, "I'll let you go!"

After storing the tea leaves in her spatial storage and filling a basket with half a basket of mushrooms and half a basket of daylilies, Chen Hong took out a machete and a hoe and descended the mountain. She made her way back along the familiar mountain path, tapping and banging her way through the trees, and then ran home.
