Transmigrated to the 1960s, Li Chu only wanted to lay low and live a safe, peaceful life.
...After Ding Qiunan woke up, Li Chu tried his best to control his expression. He only breathed a sigh of relief after she left. He was really worried that he would blurt it out.
After Nurse Wang arrived at work, he remembered that she came from the obstetrics and gynecology department, so he asked, "Sister Wang, how are prenatal checkups conducted in our obstetrics and gynecology department?"
Nurse Wang looked at Li Chu blankly: "Dr. Li, I didn't quite understand what you were saying. What are prenatal checkups?"
"It's just that when a woman is pregnant, she needs to come to the hospital for regular checkups." Li Chu looked at Nurse Wang with a strange glint in her eyes. "No way, are you sure you're an OB/GYN nurse? You're kidding."
"Do I need to have regular checkups during pregnancy? I didn't know that. I've never heard of that." After hearing Li Chu's explanation, Nurse Wang seemed even more confused.
“I’ve worked in obstetrics and gynecology for ten years and I’ve never seen a pregnant woman come for a check-up. I didn’t have a check-up when I was pregnant before either.”
Li Chu then realized that there were no prenatal checkups or records for pregnant women these days.
Nowadays, not many people come to the hospital to give birth, let alone for check-ups. As long as there are no problems during pregnancy, they won't go to the hospital until after giving birth.
Seeing Li Chu standing there in a daze, Nurse Wang asked, "Dr. Li, where did you hear that you have to come to the hospital for check-ups during pregnancy?"
"No, I haven't heard of that. It's just that my wife is pregnant, and I was wondering if we should do any tests, so I asked you."
"Dr. Li, you're too nervous. It's alright. You're a doctor too, you must know Ding Qiunan's condition. Don't worry," Nurse Wang said with a smile. She felt that Li Chu was making a mountain out of a molehill. Isn't this how it is for women when they're pregnant and giving birth? Who would come to the hospital for a checkup for no reason? They're really just wasting their time.
"Hehe, I don't have much experience this time, so I'm a little worried."
After hearing Li Chu's words, Nurse Wang chuckled and said nothing more, then lowered her head to read her book.
Li Chu smacked his lips. "Sigh, we're talking past each other. Even the hospital staff don't think tests are necessary, let alone ordinary people."
Sitting in his chair, Li Chu pondered. Since the obstetrics and gynecology department didn't offer prenatal checkups, there was no need to think about having an ultrasound to monitor the fetal heartbeat; the doctors in the ultrasound room probably hadn't even heard of it.
Take your pulse again at home tonight. If the pulse is the same as at noon, then you can be sure.
Li Chu let out a heavy sigh. If his wife was indeed pregnant with twins, then the care he needed to give her would have to be changed. Twins require much more attention than a single pregnancy.
Li Chu was in a state of panic, as he had absolutely no experience in taking care of a pregnant woman.
I remember when Qin Huairu was pregnant, she didn't receive much care, but she still gave birth smoothly at home.
No, no, I have to cherish my own wife, especially since she's carrying twins.
After we finalize things tonight, I must call my sister to ask her; she has experience. I'll also consult my mother-in-law during my break this week.
My mind was racing with chaotic thoughts, while another voice kept reminding me to stay calm.
I really need to calm down right now. No wonder they say a doctor can't heal himself; concern really does lead to confusion.
The afternoon passed amidst this commotion. Before leaving get off work, Li Chu went to the internal medicine department to borrow a stethoscope, hoping to try and hear the fetal heartbeat.
I vaguely remember hearing in my previous life that some doctors could hear a fetal heartbeat with a stethoscope.
On the way home with Ding Qiunan, Li Chu had returned to normal. Although he was still very excited, he was at least able to keep a straight face.
After returning home and having dinner, Li Chu pulled Ding Qiunan to sit on the sofa, took out a stethoscope, and asked her to lift her clothes.
"What are you doing?" the girl asked curiously. Li Chu was wearing a stethoscope in one ear, with the other end pressed against her stomach.
He gestured for the girl to be quiet, then listened carefully.
Well, I don't have that skill. Li Chu reluctantly took the stethoscope off.
What did you hear?
"I heard from others that you can hear the fetal heartbeat with a stethoscope, so I wanted to try it, but I couldn't hear anything," Li Chu explained awkwardly.
The girl looked at him and laughed: "How could you possibly hear that?"
"Hey, don't you believe me? You should be able to hear the fetal heartbeat after two months of pregnancy. Maybe I'm just not good enough."
After saying that, he pulled Ding Qiunan into the study and told her that he was going to take her pulse.
"Why do you want to take my pulse again? Li Chu, you're acting a bit strange today," Ding Qiunan said, puzzled.
"Oh dear, I just wanted to check on your health. You're pregnant, and I'm worried about any changes in your body."
Li Chu did not tell his wife that he had secretly checked Ding Qiunan's pulse at noon, because he was worried that Ding Qiunan would be too excited if she heard it, which would cause her pulse to become unstable.
After taking her pulse with both hands, Li Chu gave her a big smile.
"Honey, I have some good news to tell you."
"What other good news? Can you tell a man from a woman's gender just by looking at his pulse?"
"How is that possible? Your man is a human, not a god. Who can tell a man's gender from his pulse?" Li Chu felt utterly exasperated.
"What other good news could there be?"
"Honey, you're having twins. Isn't that good news?"
"What did you say?" Ding Qiunan's voice rose sharply upon hearing Li Chu's words.
Li Chu walked to Ding Qiunan's side, cupped her face in his hands, and made her look up at him.
"You heard right, you have two babies in your belly."
"How is this possible? Li Chu, are you sure you're not mistaken?" Ding Qiunan felt a little incredulous.
After she finished speaking, she lowered her head and touched her stomach, then looked up at her husband again.
“I took your pulse when you were sleeping at noon. At the time, I didn’t quite believe it, but now I can tell you with certainty that I didn’t make a mistake.”
Ding Qiunan suddenly felt a little short of breath and opened her mouth to breathe heavily. Li Chu quickly reached out and patted her back.
The girl was still a little incredulous. She lifted her clothes, looked at her slightly protruding belly, and gently stroked it back and forth, as if she could touch her baby.
"Li Chu, are you saying there are two babies inside?" Ding Qiunan lowered her head and pointed to her stomach.
"That's right."
"Then what should I do?" Ding Qiunan looked a little flustered.
"Wife, you don't need to do anything. Just make sure you eat well and sleep well every day, and leave the rest to me. Okay? Trust me, I will take good care of you." Li Chu looked at the girl with firm eyes.
Seeing Li Chu's determined gaze, Ding Qiunan's panicked heart gradually calmed down, and she slowly nodded.
