It's spring again, apricot blossoms blooming in the drizzle, willows drooping in the wind. At the foot of Jingshan Mountain, a suburb of the capital, lies a flat, open expanse, facing the Yongding River and nestled against the foot of Jingshan Mountain. It's a blessed spot, blessed with good winds and water, and thus, people have built homes here since the Qing Dynasty. Over time, the area grew larger and larger, forming a sizable village.
Because there are many apricot trees growing naturally inside and outside the village, the apricot blossoms bloom every spring and the fragrance spreads for miles, so this village is called Xinghua Village.
At the back of the village lies a spacious quadrangle. The first courtyard houses the back house and the narrow courtyard with the gatehouse. Passing through a hanging flower gate leads to the main hall and side rooms for public use, totaling twelve rooms, forming the second courtyard. Passing through another hanging flower gate leads to the main house, veranda, and east and west side rooms, forming the third courtyard, also with twelve rooms. A door in the side room east of the main house connects the third and fourth courtyards. The fourth courtyard houses the back courtyard, also with twelve rooms.
The four courtyards were surrounded by a tall wall, with white glazed tiles and red doors with copper nails, creating a secluded yet dignified atmosphere. A plaque hung high above the lintel of the main gate, inscribed in bold, gold-painted characters: "Ciyimen Medical Clinic." The brushstrokes were powerful and imposing.
The courtyard is far from the other houses in the village, but it's quite close to the hillside. A short walk out the backyard leads to a peak on Jingshan Mountain. Apricot trees grow in a patchwork pattern around the courtyard and on the hillside. It's apricot blossom season, their vibrant pinks and rosy hues dotting the landscape, capturing the spring breeze. From afar, the courtyard's glazed tiles appear faintly amidst the sea of flowers and clouds, making one feel that the bustling city, with its hustle and bustle of fame and fortune, pales in comparison to this serene haven.
At daybreak, Xinghua Village welcomed its first visitors: four young men in their early twenties, backpacks on their backs, wandering the village, curious about everything. Walking in front was the only male among the group. He was thin, wore glasses, and looked refined and scholarly.
The boy looked at the map in his hand over and over again, as if he was a little unsure. Just then, a villager who had gotten up early passed by them, carrying two buckets of water. The boy quickly shouted and stopped the man to ask for directions.
"Hey, young man, do you know there is a clinic here?"
The man carrying water was a young man in his mid-twenties, stocky and dark-skinned, a farmer who had been digging in the soil for years. As soon as the young men across from him were dressed, he knew they must be from the capital. He put down his load and smiled at the boy with glasses:
"Little brother, are you here to look for the Ciyimen Clinic?"
Another girl with a ponytail and many pimples on her face said happily, "Yes, yes, yes! Brother, are we in the right place?"
The young man wiped his sweat off his face and nodded, saying, "Yes, it's in this village! Follow this road all the way to the end, then turn right and go straight. When you pass the third big locust tree, go to the southwest fork in the road. When you see the house with two old apricot trees at the door, go north from the road in front of their house and keep going until you see it! Go!"
The boy with glasses looked at the hand-drawn route map in his hand, then thought about what the young man said. His mind went blank and he became even more confused.
"Uh, little brother, could you please say it again? I, I don't remember..."
The young man carrying water was happy. He picked up his load and said, "Why don't you wait here for me? I'll take the water home first and then I'll take you there later!"
The four of them were overjoyed, thanked the young man, and waited there. About ten minutes later, the young man carrying water reappeared, holding a bamboo basket full of eggs. The four of them followed the young man and walked towards the clinic.
