The apocalypse arrived, but there were no zombies. Only unpredictable extreme weather and daily squabbles forced humans to survive on instinct alone to avoid being eliminated.
Yun Qi struggle...
Si Cheng swung his pickaxe and tried to dig a deep hole on the side.
Yuntao suggested, "It's still frozen really thick here, it might take a little while. Why don't we take turns digging?"
"Alright, everyone, give it a try." Si Cheng said, putting the pickaxe on the ground and stepping aside.
The monkey went forward first, picked up a pickaxe, and tried to knock a hole in the ice, but it only managed to make a small round hole, which made the people around it burst into laughter.
"Brother Monkey, have you been staying at home so much that your strength has become rusty?"
"No way, it's probably because Monkey King was afraid that if he hit too hard, he would fall into a big pit, so he didn't dare to use his full strength."
The monkey wasn't angry at all. It simply handed the pickaxe to Yun Tao, who was laughing happily beside it, and said, "Here, you give it a try."
"Give it a try, it'll definitely be bigger than your pinhole."
After saying that, he gripped the pickaxe tightly and struck downwards with all his might, but to his surprise, the pickaxe bounced back. Only a small white mark appeared on the ice, without even a dent.
"Why is it so hard?"
The monkey pointed at him and said with a smile, "You said it would be bigger than the eye of my needle, but I can't even see the eye of the needle."
"Brother, I was wrong. The ground was just too hard. I used all my strength, but it still turned out like this."
"Let's give it a try." After saying that, several people took turns trying it out.
Apart from Big Bear, who could actually crack a hole, everyone else was just scratching an itch.
Si Cheng watched them try, realizing that if he hadn't still had some strength, he really wouldn't have been able to break through the ice.
"Brother Cheng, please continue. We really can't beat it."
Si Cheng didn't say much. He took the pickaxe and swung it around. The ice under his pickaxe fell out one piece after another like clods of soil. Soon he had swung it out in a circle with a diameter of one and a half meters, signaling everyone to take steel shovels and clear out the ice inside.
After clearing away the ice, he continued to dig deeper with his pickaxe, doing this four times before he finally saw water bubbling up from below.
"This ice is too thick. Luckily, Brother Cheng is here, otherwise we definitely wouldn't be able to beat it."
Si Cheng put the pickaxe aside, took the steel shovel from the monkey's hand, and gently tapped along the bubbling area. Soon, the ice in the middle rose a little. "Everyone be careful, shovel away the ice on the sides."
After everyone finished shoveling the ice, they discussed how to set up the net.
Big Bear looked at the water in the pit: "We brought it here, but we definitely can't put the net in. The water isn't flowing right now, so we can't even move the net. We can only try to put a fish trap in it."
Everyone tidied up the traps they had brought, and just as the monkey took out the bait and was about to mix it, Si Cheng suddenly spoke up.
"Everyone, step back a bit. There seems to be some movement in the lake."
Everyone consciously took a few steps back, and after a while, they all heard a splashing sound coming from the water.
Yun Tao, with a wild imagination, asked, "Could it be some kind of behemoth that's coming?"
Even that idiot Zhao Dongwei replied, "What if a kingfish comes? Can we beat it?"
Everyone rolled their eyes. Do you think you can just run into a fish king or a giant like that so easily?
"They're here!" Recently, several fish heads slowly surfaced, their mouths wide open, breathing in the air.
Then one after another, large fish heads surfaced, and slowly the entire pond was filled with them.
Yun Xun unconsciously touched his arm; it was covered in a dense rash, and goosebumps rose all over his body.
The more they crowded together, the denser they became. At this point, several fish even jumped out of the puddle, bounced a few times on the ice, and then stopped moving.
"So there really are such stupid fish. This is a gift delivered to our door."
Seeing that everyone was stunned, Si Cheng quickly said, "Pick up that net and try to scoop out the biggest ones."
At this point, everyone came to their senses, but there were only two nets, so they had to take turns.
The monkey and the bear originally wanted to teach everyone how to use a landing net, but the fish in the lake didn't resist at all, so they could just scoop them out. In this way, there was no skill involved at all.
What else is there to say? Let's just get to it. The two men's hands moved incessantly, and one after another, large fish flew out.
At this point, no one bothered to distinguish what kind of fish it was; they just kept scooping it out.
Soon, everyone had filled all the bags they brought. The only thing left to do was let them freeze directly on the ice.
When the monkeys got tired of scooping, they took turns going up, until the net broke, and everyone was still not satisfied. They even picked up steel shovels and swung them outwards, and surprisingly, they didn't miss every time.
Despite the cold weather, everyone was sweating profusely.
Seeing that everyone's faces were already sweating, it's not a good thing to sweat at this time. If you get cold later, you'll get sick.
"Alright, that's enough. Let's carry these bags back first, and you all should hurry back and change into dry clothes. The rest can be collected by the other villagers."
It was only then that everyone realized they were sweating, so they stopped and threw the ice they had shoveled off into the puddle, where a thin layer of ice quickly formed.
The bags we brought were just enough for each person to carry a sack of fish back home.
Si Cheng carried fish on his shoulder and dragged a fishing net in his hand.
"Wait a minute, you go back and have someone else go and inform them. I'll come back later to guard this entrance, make sure no one falls in."
"Let's see what they have to say when we get back. They started pouring cold water on us before we even left, saying we'd definitely come back empty-handed. Is that what you call coming back empty-handed?" Zhao Dongwei thought of the mocking laughter from his family before he left, and the sack of fish on his shoulder. This was a real slap in the face.
When they arrived at his doorstep, Si Cheng told Monkey and the others to come back to his place at a different time to fetch the fishing nets, and then he went straight inside.
"Why are you back so soon? Did you not have any fish?" Mr. Yun asked hurriedly upon hearing the commotion.
When Si Cheng opened the door and walked in, a strong fishy smell wafted towards them.
"You caught some fish? Don't tell me this whole sack is full of them?"
"There's a whole sack of fish, and a lot more on the lake. I'll notify the other villagers to catch them later. I need to go out for a bit; the water in that puddle isn't frozen solid yet, so I have to keep watch over it. It wouldn't be good if someone accidentally fell in."
At this moment, Yun's mother and Yun Qi also opened the bag. "My goodness! So big, so many fish. Are fish really that easy to catch now?"
Si Cheng took the ginger soup handed to him by his father-in-law and drank it while answering, "Those fish must have been lacking oxygen down there. As soon as we broke the ice, they swarmed together and even jumped out of the water on their own."
"Are there really fish this stupid? I should have gone with you guys to take a look."
