Propelled headlong into the relentless currents of history, Ji Yu finds himself transplanted to the tumultuous prelude to WWII.
Once an ordinary civil servant in his modern existence, Ji Yu i...
Xu Yongchang was startled when Wang Hanmin suddenly called out to him. He stopped in his tracks, turned around, and looked at Wang Hanmin.
"Yongchang, Director Li and the others have other important business to attend to, so they won't be returning to Shanghai today. There are plenty of empty seats on this plane, so you can sit with us on this one!"
Wang Hanmin didn't have many capable men under his command. Based on what he had learned from various sources, Xu Yongchang stood out among his many subordinates for his calm and steady demeanor. In terms of background, experience, and ability, Xu Yongchang seemed reliable to Wang Hanmin. After observing him for some time, Wang Hanmin finally decided to give him an important position.
Today, there happened to be a few empty seats on the plane, so he allowed Xu Yongchang to ride with him, which also showed his concern and his intention to gradually bring him into his inner circle and use him for his own purposes.
Upon hearing this, Xu Yongchang was immediately alarmed. Huang Lin had already been placed in the plane. If he boarded the plane now, it would be like walking into the gates of hell, with no chance of survival. He never expected that things would go wrong at the last moment. How should he deal with this?
However, this thought only flashed through his mind for a moment. Upon hearing Wang Hanmin's words, a simple and honest smile immediately appeared on his face, and he readily agreed, "Yes, thank you for your concern, Director!"
He certainly couldn't refuse outright, otherwise, given Wang Hanmin's vigilance, he would immediately sense something was wrong, and the operation would fail.
Without a moment's hesitation, Xu Yongchang turned around and followed Wang Hanmin up the steps, boarding the plane once again.
The plane didn't have many seats, only a dozen or so. With Wang Hanmin and his wife Fu Shengyuan, who were Li Zhiqun and Wang Hanmin's trusted bodyguards, and now with Xu Yongchang added, it seemed quite spacious.
Wang Hanmin and his wife Fu Shengyuan sat in the front section with the best view, while the other guards sat behind them in order, with Xu Yongchang sitting behind Wang Hanmin.
The pilot gave the takeoff notice, everyone fastened their seatbelts, the plane started moving, slowly entered the runway, the speed gradually increased, the scenery outside the window rushed past, and finally it left the ground, took off, and flew into the air!
The plane flew rapidly through the air, and the people on board were all lost in their own thoughts. Some gazed at the scenery outside the window, while others whispered and talked to each other, completely unaware that this was the last moment of their lives.
Only Xu Yongchang knew this clearly. He raised his hand to check the time. It was already 9:30 in the morning, and there were still 20 minutes left before the designed time for the yellow phosphorus to burn.
He was becoming increasingly nervous. Although he had been prepared for this moment, how many people in the world could face it calmly when they knew that their life was coming to an end?
He couldn't quite describe the feeling in his heart! Was it fear, helplessness, or regret...? A mix of emotions swirled together, and he couldn't make sense of it all.
However, one thing he was very clear about was that he would never regret it. If he had to make the choice again, he would still choose the same path without hesitation.
He did not regret putting on the uniform and joining the Jiangzhe Special Operations Team, nor did he regret fighting alongside his comrades on the battlefield, nor did he regret rejoining the anti-Japanese forces. Now, he did not regret boarding this plane that was flying step by step toward the end of his life. His primary goal was to witness the death and end of the traitor with his own eyes and to confirm the completion of the mission.
Turning to look out the window, I gazed down at the azure sea below. The water was full and shimmering in the sunlight, like a flawless piece of jade, sparkling with a beautiful luster, as clear as a mirror. What a beautiful sight!
Xu Yongchang reluctantly withdrew his gaze, closed his eyes, and slowly let out a long sigh, trying to clear his mind and wait quietly…
To everyone's surprise, as time went by, no abnormalities were found in the cabin. Xu Yongchang looked at the time again. It was already 10:00 a.m., and the plane had been flying over the Yellow Sea for nearly 50 minutes.
Xu Yongchang felt a pang of anxiety. This timeframe was already past the design deadline. Had he missed something? Could the suitcase be too airtight, preventing air from entering? Or was the temperature inside the luggage compartment insufficient…?
Just as he was feeling uneasy and anxious, a burnt smell began to waft from the middle of the cabin, which startled everyone.
Xu Yongchang had been observing intently and immediately smelled the odor. He was relieved, knowing that once the yellow phosphorus ignited, it would be impossible to extinguish it given the current conditions on the plane. The operation had been a success.
Wang Hanmin immediately realized what was happening and quickly said, "The smell is so strong, everyone hurry up and look for it. We're all on the plane now, if something goes wrong, no one can escape responsibility!"
Wang Hanmin's words terrified everyone. They unbuckled their seatbelts and began searching for the source of the burning smell. They quickly discovered that the smell was coming from the baggage compartment in the middle. An agent stepped forward and flung open the compartment door, and a burst of flames rushed towards him.
It turned out that there wasn't enough oxygen in the luggage compartment. The yellow phosphorus in the suitcase was only in the early stages of combustion, having just burned through the kerosene. The flames weren't very big yet. But as soon as the luggage compartment door opened, fresh oxygen rushed in, and the yellow phosphorus ignited completely, bursting into a huge ball of flame that instantly engulfed the spy, turning him into a human-shaped fireball as he tumbled and screamed in agony!
Yellow phosphorus sprayed out from the hatch and immediately burst into flames in the middle of the cabin, spreading rapidly.
Everyone was terrified by the scene, some even screaming in panic. They were now in the air, in this confined space, and the sudden burst of flames left them completely bewildered.
