Chapter 505 Fratricide

"So you're admitting it?" Pei Tai then asked.

Deng Yuankai's face was extremely ugly. He was silent for a moment, then looked at Pei Tai and said coldly, "I am not Qi Jingwu. I am not as good as him. Otherwise, I would have killed that bastard Cui Guangqi long ago to avenge my brothers. I would not have let him live for so long."

Pei Tai was speechless for a long time before slowly saying, "I also admire Qi Jingwu. When we were in the action team, we had a pretty good relationship. He was usually quiet, but I never expected that he would be able to sacrifice himself for others. He was truly remarkable. It's a pity that I couldn't do that."

The two remained silent for a long time, neither of them speaking, and it was unclear what they were thinking. Finally, Deng Yuankai asked, "Did Cui Guangqi send you to arrest me? He should have come himself."

Pei Tai's eyes dimmed, and he shook his head, saying, "The section chief doesn't know about these things."

Seeing Deng Yuankai's puzzled look, Pei Tai continued to explain, "When the director asked me to investigate your situation at the shooting scene, I didn't tell him about your unusual behavior. At the time, I only suspected you, but I didn't want the director to know. Later, I secretly followed you to the pharmacy without telling him either."

Hearing this, Deng Yuankai couldn't help but feel puzzled and asked, "You didn't tell him? Then why did he insist that I eat that bowl of wontons last night? Everyone can see that he suspects me. I'm afraid the brothers all know that Cui Guangqi is testing me!"

Pei Tai hesitated for a moment, then said in a deep voice, "You can't blame the section chief. He doesn't trust anyone now. Even when I was on night duty, he pointed his gun at me when I entered the room once. Besides, you still have some weaknesses!"

Deng Yuankai's heart sank, and he asked, "Last night, did you deliberately interrupt my poisoning?"

Pei Tai nodded and said, "I knew you were going to poison them. You would definitely tamper with those bowls of wontons when you took them, so I've been watching you closely. You would definitely try to get the last bowl to the director, so I..."

"Then why didn't you expose me back then?" Deng Yuankai asked curiously.

Pei Tai glared at him and growled in a low voice, "Why did I expose you! I was afraid you might do something foolish if you became suspicious, so I even insisted on eating that bowl of wontons for you!"

Hearing this, Deng Yuankai was relieved. Pei Tai had come with good intentions and did not want to expose him; he even tried to cover for himself.

Thinking of this, Deng Yuankai slowly lowered his raised hands and said calmly, "So what exactly do you want by pointing a gun at me now?"

Pei Tai paused for a moment, then said, "Brother Deng, I'm all alone. I have no parents to care for me, no wife or children to worry about. I can only follow the director for the rest of my life, down this dark path! But you're different. You don't want to be a traitor. You can leave. The world is so big, where can't you go? You can secretly go back and pick up your wife and children, go somewhere where the headquarters agents can't find you. Wouldn't that be better? The director is my elder brother, and you're my mentor. I don't want to see you kill each other. You should leave this place far away. It'll be better for everyone!"

Deng Yuankai looked at his younger brother quietly, feeling a surge of gratitude in his heart. Pei Tai wanted to fulfill both brotherly and teacher-student relationships, but there's no such thing as a free lunch.

If I were to escape back alone, would I leave my entire family to live a precarious existence, constantly on the run, hiding from MI6 agents? Besides, given MI6's capabilities, even if I fled to any part of China with my family, it would be difficult to escape their search. Once caught, would my family even survive?

But now he had to leave. Pei Tai already knew about his plan to assassinate Cui Guangqi. Just because he didn't say anything now didn't mean he wouldn't later. If he stayed in Shanghai, he would be putting his life in Pei Tai's hands, facing the constant threat of death. Who knew if he would wake up one day to find himself at gunpoint and brought before Cui Guangqi?

It must be said that Cui Guangqi betrayed all his comrades this time. Some comrades fought to the death and refused to surrender, while others would rather commit suicide than betray their country. However, some others bowed down and became traitors in order to save their lives. These changes made the persistence of the remaining agents a joke.

Deng Yuankai will no longer entrust his fate to others. He trusts no one now, not even Pei Tai, who looks so sincere in front of him!

It seems he has to leave, but he can't leave empty-handed. Even if he escapes back, the headquarters agents won't let him go, and he'll die anyway.

A smile appeared on Deng Yuankai's face. He nodded and said softly, "Alright then, Xiao Tai, you're right. There's no place in the world we can't go. I'll listen to you and leave tomorrow. But you have to cover for me, otherwise I'm afraid Cui Guangqi won't let me off the hook!"

Pei Tai was overjoyed to hear Deng Yuankai nod in agreement. He had been torn about this matter for the past two days, and finally came up with this solution, which would be good for everyone.

“Great, I’ll cover for you. You find a chance to leave. You have the Detective Department’s credentials, so you can freely enter and leave Shanghai. No one will stop you. Here at the Detective Department, I’ll just say you’re sick again. That’ll buy you a day, which is enough time for you to leave Shanghai. How about that?”

"It's settled then. Let's part ways amicably, brothers!" Deng Yuankai sighed softly and raised his hand in acknowledgment.

Pei Tai hesitated for a moment before putting away the short gun in his hand, raising his hand to meet Deng Yuankai's hand, gripping it tightly before slowly releasing it.
