Once an ordinary civil servant in his modern existence, Ji Yu i...
Ren Manshan breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing Li Zhiqun's words. As long as people are alive, there is hope. As for persuading Wang Hanmin, that was not a problem. He couldn't just watch Wang Hanmin be tortured to death. He knew that the No. 76 Special Agent Headquarters was known as a den of iniquity by the citizens of Shanghai, and few who entered there came out alive.
Without further hesitation, he got up, changed his clothes, and went out with Li Zhiqun. They arrived at the Special Agent Headquarters, where Li Zhiqun led him to the interrogation room where Wang Hanmin was being held. They arrived at the door of a separate cell and he signaled to the guards to open the cell door.
Li Zhiqun said to Ren Manshan, "Brother Manshan, I'm counting on you. If he remains obstinate, I'll have to resort to more severe torture. I don't think he can hold on much longer, so don't blame me then."
Ren Manshan didn't speak, just nodded and pushed the door open. But as soon as he entered the cell and saw Wang Hanmin's miserable state, he couldn't help but let out a gasp!
Li Zhiqun seemed not to hear, signaled the guards to close the cell door, turned around and went outside, took out a cigarette, lit it, and quietly waited for the outcome.
Time passed slowly, and Ren Manshan and Wang Hanmin talked inside for nearly three hours before finally ending their conversation and stepping out.
Li Zhiqun had been waiting anxiously outside. When he saw Ren Manshan come out, he quickly went up to her and asked, "How did the talks go?"
Ren Manshan nodded slowly, let out a soft breath, and said, "He agreed!"
"Really!" Li Zhiqun threw his unfinished cigarette on the ground, grabbed Ren Manshan's arm, and asked urgently.
“However, there’s a condition!” Ren Manshan said softly, his eyes fixed on Li Zhiqun, his expression extremely serious.
Li Zhiqun immediately nodded and said, "Don't worry, as long as he's willing to cooperate, we can agree to any conditions."
"First, rescue his family. My sister and my nephew are in Chongqing. If you can agree to rescue them, he will cooperate and tell us everything he knows."
Wang Hanmin's wife is Ren Manshan's sister, so he naturally has to take that into consideration.
“Once Han Chinese defect, the Military Intelligence Bureau will not let his family off the hook. The reason he refuses to speak is because he is afraid that his family will be implicated. If you can rescue them, everything will be fine.”
Li Zhiqun naturally knew that the Military Intelligence Bureau had strict rules, and Wang Hanmin's request was reasonable. Besides, it was difficult to refuse Ren Manshan's request. He thought for a moment and nodded, saying, "Okay, I will go and talk to the Japanese right away. With their strength, it shouldn't be a problem to bring two people out of Chongqing."
When Ren Manshan saw Li Zhiqun nod in agreement, he felt relieved. In this way, his brother-in-law's family could be saved.
Li Zhiqun immediately ordered Wang Hanmin to be taken out of prison and placed in an apartment building specifically allocated to high-ranking officials. He assigned a doctor on duty to take good care of him and personally arranged for security.
With everything arranged, Li Zhiqun sat down in front of Wang Hanmin's bed and said first, "Brother Hanmin, I apologize for the inconvenience. With your help this time, the situation in Shanghai can finally be stabilized."
Wang Hanmin, who had just finished treating his wounds, was wrapped up tightly. His face was terribly pale, and his lips and the corners of his eyes were swollen. He looked at Li Zhiqun helplessly and sighed.
In the end, we still have to take this step! Wang Hanmin was exhausted, both physically and mentally. The torture and electric shocks that lasted all night had severely damaged his body. There was hardly a part of his body that was intact. He really dared not recall that endless hellish torment. Just thinking about it would cause his muscles to spasm and tremble from time to time, causing a piercing pain.
Although he persevered and survived this ordeal, he knew that unless he spoke up, the pain would continue indefinitely until his death.
What kept him going was the safety of his family. He knew that if he dared to defect to the enemy, his wife and son, who were left in Chongqing, would be immediately dealt with by the Military Intelligence Bureau. He would never allow that to happen.
Wang Hanmin said in a low, hoarse voice, "Director Li, as long as you keep your word, I'm willing to cooperate, but I want to see my family first!"
Li Zhiqun was taken aback and said with difficulty, "Brother Hanmin, it is not an easy task to rescue him from Chongqing, which is thousands of miles away. Even if everything goes smoothly, we must first get him to Wuhan before we can arrange a special plane to bring him back. This takes too long. If you are missing for too long and people find out, many things will be delayed."
Wang Hanmin shook his head and said, "The reason I left Shanghai this time is to go to southern Jiangsu. They won't notice if I disappear for a few days."
Li Zhiqun, however, was unwilling to delay. He knew all too well that things could go wrong if he waited too long, especially since intelligence work was constantly changing. Wang Hanmin was now a rare commodity, but if things dragged on, there was a risk of leaks. He didn't want to lose what he had in his grasp.
But Wang Hanmin's attitude was firm. They had finally gotten him to speak, and they couldn't afford to turn against him again over these matters, could they? Thinking of this, Li Zhiqun pondered for a moment and then said, "Brother Hanmin, you're going to southern Jiangsu to find your troops, right?"
"Yes, I'm going to select some operatives and handle some other matters."
"If you don't show up soon, won't they get suspicious? Logically speaking, you should have contacted them last night, right?"
Wang Hanmin shook his head and said, "For safety reasons, I did not notify the troops in advance. I only had the liaison officer notify them after I arrived at the liaison point, so they did not know my specific whereabouts."
Upon hearing this, Li Zhiqun couldn't help but feel secretly fortunate. This arrest was in his favor in terms of both timing and opportunity. Now that no one knew that Wang Hanmin was in his hands, he could take advantage of the time difference to make some good moves.
