Small Town Rebirth: Starting From Birth

On the internet, people often commemorate their childhoods. Chen Bing, a young man from a small town who was one of them, found himself back 24 years ago, in the small town of his birth, after his ...

Chapter 19 The Little Ostrich

Chen Bing observed the scene with great interest. He had never seen so many children crammed into one room and crying together before.

If I had to describe my feelings, it would be novelty, and then it would be noisy.

However, not all children were crying.

Chen Bing noticed a little girl next to her with her hair down, her face obscured. Unlike the others, she didn't "shout to the sky" or express "heroic sentiments."

She simply kept her head down and sat upright.

Just as he was thinking this, the teacher, as if discovering an oasis hidden in the desert, spotted Chen Bing with a calm expression and his quiet deskmate.

Of all the crying children, only the two of them remained calm. According to the kindergarten's "Children's Coping Handbook, Part Seven," she could easily use them as a model example.

As the teacher thought this, she walked up to Chen Bing and the other person.

"Children, what are your names?"

"My name is Chen Bing."

The teacher smiled and nodded. She remembered this adorable child; he was the one who had cheerfully struck up a conversation with her at the school gate.

She then looked at the equally adorable little girl beside her.

The other person acted as if they hadn't heard her and kept their head down.

The teacher leaned down with some confusion and asked the same question again.

Chen Bing followed her movements and curiously looked at the girl who had her head down.

Upon hearing the teacher's question, the little girl was visibly startled, and then she shakily raised her head.

What kind of face was that?

She is cute and pretty.

But compared to those, it was her tearful face, snot and bubbles streaming down her cheeks, her pitiful and frightened expression practically radiating despair throughout the classroom—that was what truly left a deep impression on Chen Bing.

...

My mom told me yesterday that if I'm scared, I should let my hair down so no one can see my face.

But why is it that some people still noticed me?

After a brief glance at the teacher, Shang Yunmiao's doe-like eyes disappeared into the forest of her beautiful hair.

Don't look at me, don't look at me, waaaaah...

"Well……"

This teacher had taught many classes of children and was quite experienced. But she had never seen anyone as introverted as her, so shy that she didn't even dare to cry loudly, but instead buried her face in her hair.

After calming herself down, she apologized to Shang Yunmiao. Then, after getting Chen Bing's permission, she led him to the podium.

After the two people who had been staring at her left, Shang Yunmiao finally dared to slightly raise her head and peek over.

"Hello everyone, my name is Chen Bing. I will be four years old in a little over three months. I usually like to play with toys, such as puzzles, Rubik's cubes, building blocks and the like. I hope to become good friends with you all."

At the teacher's request, Chen Bing gave a brief self-introduction to the crying children below.

After Chen Bing finished speaking, the teacher was a little surprised by his excellent language organization and expression skills, but she quickly recovered and took over the conversation at the right time, continuing, "Children, look at this little Chen Bing. He is very good and did not cry. As a reward for being a good boy, the teacher will give him a little red flower."

As she spoke, she took out a small sticker from her pocket, bent down, and stuck it on Chen Bing's chest.

Although rewarding children with little red flowers is childish, it's still very appealing to a group of three-year-olds. Many of them looked up, their tearful faces fading, and looked at Chen Bing with envy.

"Does anyone else want to be a good child? Children who aren't crying can raise their hands so the teacher can see them."

After setting an example, everyone stopped crying and raised their hands high.

The teacher put little red flowers on each child in turn, and after putting one on each child, she would say, "If you get a little red flower, you're a good child. If you're a good child, you can't cry."

What Chen Bing admired most was that this teacher not only gave little red flowers to those who weren't crying, but also gave them to those who were crying as a comforting gesture.

Gradually, the crying in the classroom subsided and eventually returned to complete silence.

That solved the problem. In just over ten minutes, the first lesson in the lives of these children finally came to an end amidst their cries.

To calm the children down, the teacher turned on the television set high up in the classroom and showed them a movie called "Calabash Brothers" on DVD.

Everyone quickly became engrossed in the exciting plot, and no one cried out or called for their mothers anymore.

Chen Bing had watched the animated series Calabash Brothers many times, but because the TV was set up quite high, it was uncomfortable to look up, so she didn't watch it like others.

He glanced around and noticed that there was someone else besides himself who wasn't watching TV.

This person is my deskmate, that introverted little girl.

That's true. She doesn't even dare to cry loudly, so how could she possibly look up to watch TV?

This little ostrich has a rather extreme personality.

Without giving it much thought, Chen Bing glanced at the teacher, who was busy talking to the children and didn't seem to have the energy to pay attention to them. So, he got up, went to the back of the classroom, picked up the children's books from the reading corner, and flipped through them.

The content consisted of very childish stories, which didn't interest Chen Bing. However, it was quite interesting to compare the English and Chinese versions side-by-side and read the translations.

After selecting two books, Chen Bing returned to her seat and began to read them slowly.

Although the content is quite childish, the translation is still quite good, and Chen Bing has never been exposed to this kind of juvenile translation language before, so it is still quite interesting to read.

After reading two lines, he turned his head slightly and looked at the little ostrich that was peeking at him.

The moment their eyes met, the other person abruptly pulled their head back and never looked up again.

The little girl was quite shy.

Chen Bing turned her gaze away from her and continued reading her book.

Just as he was engrossed in watching, Shang Yunmiao turned her head back. However, her movement was so subtle that Chen Bing didn't notice it.

What he didn't realize was that this timid rabbit girl was looking at him with adoration.

I want to be like him and not cry, I want to stand in front and introduce myself to everyone like him, I want to talk to the teacher and be praised by the teacher like him, I want to get the things I like like him... Waaah... I really want to cry, but the teacher said I am a good child, and good children can't cry.

Just as she was thinking this, the teacher came up to them.

Shang Yunmiao quickly averted her gaze, like a fawn hiding in the forest.

"Can little Chen Bing understand English?"

After noticing what book Chen Bing was reading, the teacher asked with considerable surprise.

She majored in early childhood education, so she knew how remarkable it was for a child under three to understand English. Children that age are usually just learning to recognize characters; they don't even know much Chinese, let alone English.

To be able to recognize English at this age, one must have been exposed to English for a long time from a very young age.

"Sure, you can understand anything that isn't too difficult."

Although Chen Bing speaks fluent English like a native speaker, speaking and writing/recognizing are two different things. Therefore, if it involves English books in a professional field, Chen Bing will have a hard time understanding them because she doesn't know the proper nouns and obscure vocabulary.

The young female teacher was of course unaware of these things, but that did not diminish her admiration for the child in front of her.

Although, according to her knowledge, she should have praised him wholeheartedly at this moment, the teacher couldn't resist the urge and pointed to a line of English in the book, asking Chen Bing, "Could you help me translate this sentence?"

Chen Bing looked in the direction the teacher pointed, then read the sentence fluently, and then translated it: "So, the little animals came to the forest at the lion's invitation."

The teacher smiled, clapped at Chen Bing, and said many words of praise.

After patting the cute little boy's clever head, she looked at Shang Yunmiao, who was quietly pretending to be an ostrich.
