On the internet, people often commemorate their childhoods. Chen Bing, a young man from a small town who was one of them, found himself back 24 years ago, in the small town of his birth, after his ...
In late spring, a warm breeze accompanied by a light drizzle made the weather quite pleasant.
The students of Class 1, Grade 8, leaned against the windowsill in front of the classroom, pointing and whispering at the junior high students walking by below the teaching building.
It's already April 2019, and the annual junior high school entrance examination is less than two months away. Unlike the college entrance examination, which has explicit regulations, the junior high school entrance examination is considered an "illegal" examination, and its procedures vary greatly depending on the prefecture-level city.
In some prefecture-level cities, the total score for the high school entrance examination can reach 800 or 900 points, while in others it is only 600 points, such as Chaojin City where Chen Bing is located.
The scores for the Asahi City Junior High School Entrance Examination are distributed as follows: Chinese 100, Mathematics 100, English 100, Physics 60, Chemistry 50, Moral Education and Law 60, History 50, Experiment Operation 10, Information Technology 20, Physical Education 60, for a total of 610 points.
In addition, geography and biology are not included in the high school entrance examination. Instead, they are completed early in the second semester of the second year of junior high school and presented in the student's file as four grades: a, b, c, and d. I don't know what their purpose is.
With so many subjects, it's impossible to finish all the exams in just a few days. Therefore, aside from the seven core subjects of Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Politics, and History, other miscellaneous exams will be taken two months before the high school entrance exam.
And this score of 90 is the goal that the ninth graders are aiming for today.
Judging from the smiles on their faces, they must have done quite well on the exam.
From a distance, Ma Shaolong spotted a boy he often played basketball with and was fairly familiar with. So he called out the boy's name from afar and asked, "Hey, Wei-ge! How did the exam go?"
The guy called "Viagra" immediately looked up and replied when Ma Shaolong called him, "Not bad, not bad! Three points were deducted from the computer science section and two from the experiment!"
"What about sports!"
"Perfect score!"
"Wow~" A chorus of exclamations came from the surroundings. Although the three subjects mentioned above were easy and it was easy to get high scores, it was still quite remarkable to score 85 points.
Just as everyone was marveling at this, the geography teacher's voice came from behind them urging them on.
"Stop playing around, no matter how well others do on the test, you won't get any points. Hurry up and go into the classroom, let's have a quick quiz before class starts."
The old geography teacher herded the reluctant students back to the classroom like ducks, then closed the door and handed out the geography test papers.
This behavior clearly shows that he is a very responsible teacher. However, when this sense of responsibility is applied to a playful eighth-grade student, it inevitably becomes a bit frustrating for everyone.
The geography teacher didn't care, sitting upright by the podium playing with his newly acquired ruler. The brown paint was adorned with Confucius's classical phrases in golden hues; a simple pinch of one end of the ruler, a light tap on a student's palm or calf, was enough to make them wince in pain.
So everyone fell silent. Unlike other teachers who used rulers to demonstrate on the blackboard, the geography teacher would actually hit people's hands, even the girls!
He dared to defy the Education Bureau's ban on corporal punishment before, but now that the policy has been relaxed and rulers have been issued, he is even more at ease.
In such a large class, there were very few people who hadn't been punished by him, and even fewer who weren't afraid of him. So, he only played with the ruler a couple of times, and the class became exceptionally disciplined.
However, there are always exceptions.
Five or six minutes into the exam, just as the bell rang for the start of the third period, Chen Bing and Shang Yunmiao pushed open the classroom door.
"Report."
"Come in." The geography teacher nodded to the two of them with a smile, and then called out to Chen Bing as she passed by.
"I just made a few questions, can you do them and give me some advice?"
Chen Bing readily agreed, moved his own stool and sat down in front of the teacher, picking up his pen and quickly writing down the questions.
This geography teacher was officially transferred to Baishi No.1 Middle School when Chen Bing was in the second year of junior high school.
I heard from other teachers that the person in question was originally a top-level teacher who taught at a junior high school in the provincial capital. If it weren't for his advanced age, which made it harder for him to handle the high-intensity teaching at his original school, and his homesickness, he would have voluntarily requested a transfer. Otherwise, he would never have come to work at a junior high school in a rural town.
In short, the other party is a capable person who not only won numerous awards and professional titles in his youth, but also frequently participates in the creation of exam questions for large-scale examinations.
"How about it?"
"The knowledge points are all in the textbook, and they seem simple, but they are very comprehensive. You have to learn them thoroughly and form a system in your mind to answer them comprehensively. If you only remember some fragments, you can only get half the points at most. The teacher's questions are very good, but if the last sub-question is changed like this, wouldn't it be less suitable for junior high school students?"
Chen Bing wrote down her changes on the side and handed them to the geography teacher.
After taking a look and pondering it for a while, Xie Guanghui smiled gently and explained, "You're oversimplifying things. This last question is based on an extension in the textbook. Turn to page 78 of the first semester of eighth grade and see if reading that extension makes it much easier."
When Chen Bing saw that it was true, she immediately showered the geography teacher with compliments, making the teacher beam with joy.
"This question was asked to me by a tutoring institution based on the knowledge points. Take their tutoring materials back and take a look; there are many similar ones in there."
As Xie Guanghui spoke, he handed Chen Bing a white-covered study guide, which touched Chen Bing a little.
"Thank you, teacher."
"Go back and finish your test before get out of class ends."
When he returned to his seat, there were only about twenty minutes left in the class. But it wasn't a big problem; Chen Bing could finish these simple questions in just over ten minutes. The main limitation was his typing speed.
After a frantic rush, I finally finished the test paper before the end of get out of class and had several minutes to review the supplementary materials the teacher had just given me.
To be honest, since geography and biology are not included in the high school entrance examination, related teaching materials are not very popular, and those that can improve students' academic performance in a way that is particularly outstanding are even rarer.
Chen Bing only flipped through a dozen pages before discovering two or three points of knowledge that she didn't know or was only vaguely familiar with.
All I can say is that I'm just learning it one more time. No matter how solid my foundation is, how can I compare to those who make a living from this?
After a few moments of reflection, get out of class was almost over.
After tidying up, it's time to head to the lecture hall on the first floor.
This doesn't mean we'll be taking any classes there, but rather that the biology teacher wants to use the next class and a short self-study period to bring together Class 1 and Class 2 for a test.
After handing in their geography papers, the students packed up their paper pads, pens, and other supplies to continue their work.
After an afternoon of quizzes, everyone was left feeling dizzy and their stomachs were rumbling, needing to replenish their energy.
After stretching her back, Chen Bing led Shang Yunmiao out of the school, chatting with her about the questions from the two exams while also thinking about what to eat later...
