An Moxue carried a basket of sticky rice cakes given to her by Aunt Guo back home. She had been out early and back late for several days and hadn't been able to clean properly, so she looked at the whole house with disdain.

After the last few pieces of wood were put into the stove, she carried half a basin of water into the house and wiped the kang (a heated brick bed), the table, and the cabinets. She wiped everything, and seeing the house clean and tidy, she finally felt comfortable.
