Medical doctor Su Wan transmigrated to the Great Jin Dynasty. She initially thought she was in for a typical palace maid/harem drama, but soon she was married off as a bride to bring good luck by h...
"Take a look! I am a disciple of a legendary doctor, with superb medical skills, efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine, and miraculous healing abilities. My medicine can cure any disease instantly."
As soon as she entered Xiping Pass, Su Wan started shouting at the top of her lungs, attracting the attention of passersby.
Wei Jingzhuo carried a large medicine box on his left shoulder and an oilcloth umbrella on his right, holding a sign that read "Miraculous Healers" beside her.
They shouted all the way, but no one paid any attention to them despite the large number of people coming and going.
Su Wan was a little puzzled and whispered to Wei Jingzhuo, "Little Zhuozi, why is no one paying attention to me?"
To conceal their true identities, the two agreed that in Xiping Pass, Wei Jingzhuo would call her "Doctor Su," and she would call Wei Jingzhuo "Little Zhuozi."
For servants, just call them by their nicknames.
Wei Jingzhuo said in a serious tone, "Dr. Su, the way you address me makes me feel like one of those itinerant street performers, not a doctor at all."
Su Wan said, "Then what should we do? We need to find business quickly, otherwise who will notice us?"
The Fifth Prince is preparing his army to attack the Northwest. She doesn't have time to wait for customers to come to her. Although shouting and yelling might seem a bit low-class, someone might have a sudden illness and come looking for her.
Wei Jingzhuo said, "Dr. Su is right, then let's shout again."
Su Wan called out again. A man with his sleeves rolled up walked past her, glanced at her from head to toe, and laughed, "A miracle doctor, huh? You should examine yourself first. Look at your frail body, you'd probably fly away in a gust of wind."
Su Wan angrily waved her little fist at the man's back and said, "What do you know? The filling of a steamed bun isn't on the pleats."
Wei Jingzhuo asked, "Doctor, should we continue calling?"
Su Wan rolled her eyes at him: "I'm tired of calling out, it's your turn."
Wei Jingzhuo said, "I'm sorry to call out to you."
Su Wan said with her hands behind her back, "You're really something, making the doctor call out instead of the servants. Who's the doctor between us?"
Wei Jingzhuo had no choice but to call out, "Take a look! Doctor Su is a disciple of a legendary physician, his medical skills are superb, his methods are effective, he can bring the dead back to life, and his medicine can cure any illness. Is anyone here for a checkup?"
Just as they finished shouting, several people came out from around the corner. Two of them were carrying a stretcher with an old man lying on it. They hurried over. The leader pointed at Su Wan and exclaimed, "You, you, you!"
Su Wan was overjoyed and stepped forward, saying, "This old gentleman..."
Before she could finish speaking, the man waved his hand and said, "Don't block the way, don't block the way," driving her and Wei Jingzhuo to the side of the road.
Su Wan's mouth had barely opened in a grin, and before the smile was even fully formed, a group of people had already carried the stretcher over.
Wei Jingzhuo chuckled behind her.
Su Wan turned around and gave Wei Jingzhuo a flick on the forehead: "What are you laughing at?"
Wei Jingzhuo rubbed his head and said, "Dr. Su, don't be in such a hurry. Haste makes waste."
Su Wan ignored him, and seeing a restaurant ahead, she turned around and said, "Xiao Zhuozi, it's already noon, let's go have some food first."
"Didn't you just finish eating before you entered the country?"
"You're so verbose. My throat is sore from shouting too much; I need some hot soup."
It was lunchtime, and the restaurant was packed with people from all walks of life. Most were eating noodles, and some were eating beef sandwiches. The whole place was filled with the aroma of beef and the sound of slurping noodles.
"You two are here," the waiter said, stepping forward. "Would you like to eat or just grab a bite?"
To avoid attracting attention, Su Wan and Wei Jingzhuo dressed quite plainly. The waiter assumed they were poor and didn't smile very enthusiastically.
"Let's eat," Su Wan said, standing in front of the counter. "What are some of your signature dishes?"
The waiter said, "Sir, you've come to the right place. Our shop is most famous for its large bowl of beef noodles. You can see what everyone is eating."
Su Wan turned to look at the people eating in the lobby and said to the waiter, "The beef in your noodles isn't as thin as paper, is it?"
The waiter said, "Sir, you must be joking. The beef chunks in our beef noodles are huge. They're as big as a child's fist..."
Despite the waiter's boasting, Su Wan still wasn't really interested in eating. It was her first time in Xipingguan, and she wanted to see if they had any local specialties, so she asked, "A restaurant this big, do you only sell noodles?"
"This is how it is on the first floor. If you're in a hurry, how about some noodles or a roujiamo (Chinese hamburger)?" The waiter immediately put on a smile, draped a towel over his shoulder, and led them to the stairs. "The private rooms on the second floor are all stir-fries. Shall I take you two upstairs?"
Su Wan gave Wei Jingzhuo a look and went upstairs first.
The second floor was indeed different. The kitchen was filled with the sounds of knives and spoons, and a rich aroma wafted out from behind the curtain, making Su Wan's appetite soar.
She chose a private room by the window, sat down facing Wei Jingzhuo, and asked the waiter, "What's your best dish?"
"Our restaurant is most famous for its braised pork hock," the waiter said. "Even General Meng's servants often come here to buy it. Would you like to try some, sir?"
Su Wan's heart skipped a beat, and she said to the waiter, "General Meng?"
The waiter smiled and said, "Sir, you've just arrived at Xiping Pass, haven't you? General Meng is the commander of Xiping Pass. He loves our braised pork hock the most and always sends his servants to buy it."
Su Wan said, "Okay, cut us two catties of braised pork hock, and two cold dishes and two hot dishes, that's four dishes in total."
The waiter said, "Alright, please wait a moment, sir. Your food will be here soon."
After the waiter left, Wei Jingzhuo whispered, "Ah Wan, you're quite skilled at taking orders."
Su Wan thought to herself, "That's right, I've eaten out with Luna and Chu Yi quite a few times." She smiled and said, "It's nice to splurge a little now and then, but when you come here, you have to try the local specialties. This braised pork knuckle is for you."
Wei Jingzhuo said in a low voice, "It's a good time to come. If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known that Meng Tao, the garrison commander of Xiping Pass, likes to eat braised pork knuckle here."
