Medical doctor Su Wan transmigrated to the Great Jin Dynasty. She initially thought she was in for a typical palace maid/harem drama, but soon she was married off as a bride to bring good luck by h...
Su Wan and Meng Ruliu did not treat patients in the capital, but instead left the capital and went to a village outside the capital.
In Su Wan's words, those who could live in the capital were either rich or noble, and there were several large pharmacies and clinics there, so she didn't need to get involved. She hoped to go to villages where ordinary people lived to provide free medical care to the poor.
The two set up a stall in a nearby village, but no one came to see it for the first few days. People didn't trust them because they were women and didn't even have a shop.
Meng Ruliu was anxious, but Su Wan wasn't bothered at all. In her words, good wine needs no bush.
Later, a passerby fell seriously ill, and Su Wan stopped him, curing him in no time. Her reputation spread, and people began to come to her for treatment in twos and threes. Su Wan's medicine was infallible; everyone who came recovered, and two people at a time recovered. What the people praised most was that Dr. Su's medical consultations were free.
After seeing more than a dozen patients, the village chief was grateful for her act of kindness and specially arranged for them to stay in a small courtyard for free. During this time, family members of the patients would also come to their door from time to time to bring them eggs, vegetables, meat and other things.
One morning, the two got up before dawn. Su Wan packed her things, and Meng Ruliu helped her.
Meng Ruliu said to Su Wan, "Sister-in-law, are you really not taking any money? Please take at least a little."
Su Wan said, "The war just ended not long ago, and everyone is dirt poor. As the empress, I have no worries about money, and the village chief gave us houses to live in for free. We also received gifts of gratitude from patients. I am quite content."
Seeing Su Wan packing her things, Meng Ruliu asked, "What's wrong? Are we leaving?"
Su Wan slung her pack over her shoulder and said, "I don't plan to stay here long. We're itinerant doctors, doctors who travel all over the place. Let's leave quietly before everyone gets up this morning."
Meng Ruliu nodded in agreement and packed her belongings. The two of them left with only their own things.
Before dawn, the village was quiet. Only an old man with failing eyesight, leaning on his cane, coughed at the door. As the two walked past him, the old man looked up but couldn't see them clearly, and then greeted them.
As the two arrived at the village entrance and were about to walk onto the main road, a weak, hoarse voice suddenly rang out from the roadside.
"Dr. Su... Dr. Su, please save me."
It was still dark, and Su Wan and Meng Ruliu hadn't noticed anyone by the roadside at all, so they were both startled. Su Wan looked closely and saw a ragged beggar lying by a rock by the roadside, struggling to stand up with his hands on the rock. His walking stick was made of bamboo, and the end of it was split, lying to the side.
Meng Ruliu was about to step forward to help the beggar when Su Wan stopped her, saying, "Sister, wait a minute, he has an infectious disease."
Upon hearing Su Wan's reminder, Meng Ruliu looked at the beggar's exposed arm and noticed that the beggar's arm seemed to have many large bumps, one here and one there. Although it was not very clear, it was still quite frightening.
The beggar, his hair disheveled and covering his face, gasped, "Dr. Su, I rushed here overnight. Please, I beg you, treat my illness."
Su Wan took a mask and handed it, along with the package, to Meng Ruliu, saying, "Sister-in-law, step back. I'll handle this."
Then she took out a pair of gloves and put them on.
The beggar struggled to his feet, barely managing to stand against the rock. He reached up and brushed aside the tangled hair covering his face, revealing dirty pieces of cloth stuck all over it. As he swayed, the cloth above his eye fell down, revealing a huge, concealed lump.
Meng Ruliu was horrified by what she saw and said with a disgusted expression, "This person has so many tumors."
Su Wan said, "This is not a simple tumor; he has a sexually transmitted disease."
"What are sexually transmitted diseases?" Meng Ruliu asked.
Su Wan said, "It's a cough... a very scary disease that you get from frequenting brothels."
The beggar trembled and cried out, "Dr. Su, can my illness still be cured?"
Su Wan looked you up and down and said, "Judging from your symptoms... it's obviously in the late stage, and your internal organs have probably been affected."
The beggar lowered his head in shame and said, "Alas, it's all my own fault..."
Meng Ruliu felt that the voice sounded somewhat familiar. Since it was dark and she couldn't see clearly, she stepped forward to take a closer look and said, "Why does your voice sound somewhat familiar?"
The beggar raised his head, his cloudy eyes, filled with eye boogers, and looked at Meng Ruliu. Suddenly, he cried out in surprise and turned to run away.
Without crutches, his legs were stiff, and he tripped and fell after only two steps, struggling to stay upright.
Meng Ruliu's eyes widened, and she exclaimed, "So it's you, you stinky man! I never expected to run into you here."
Su Wan didn't react for a moment, and quickly stopped Meng Ruliu, saying, "Sister-in-law, don't roll up your sleeves, who is this person?"
The beggar covered his face with his hands and cried out, "Don't tell, don't tell!"
Meng Ruliu was stopped by Su Wan and said angrily, "Who else could it be but this heartless man?"
Su Wan immediately understood that Meng Ruliu had only ever talked to one man, and there was only one man who could make her mention unfaithful men.
She turned to look at the filthy beggar, her gaze complex.
This man was the one she was originally going to marry, the man who deceived Meng Ruliu's feelings, and the man who cheated Su Yue'e—Zhao Rongzhang.
She had just transmigrated, and if Su Heng and his wife hadn't forced her into a marriage of convenience, she would have been married to a man like this. Life is truly unpredictable. She never imagined this guy would have fallen to such a miserable state, not only becoming a beggar but also suffering from a late-stage sexually transmitted disease that was difficult to cure.
There's always a reason why someone is pitiful. Zhao Rongzhang's lack of self-discipline led to this tragic end.
However, Su Wan thought that she only had a few months to live. Seeing Zhao Rongzhang barely clinging to life, covered in filth and utterly undignified, she had no desire to kick him while he was down. She stopped Meng Ruliu and said, "Sister-in-law, look at him now."
