It was winter, and the midday sun was blazing, but it was anything but warm.

The blinding white sunlight seemed to carry a chill as Wanqi Fuze pulled He Lingling out and shoved her into his car.

Because he was angry, his movements were somewhat forceful.

He Lingling was "thrown" into the car, letting out a soft groan of pain. Wan Qifuze didn't look at her; his face and body were cold, but he still helped her fasten her seatbelt before leaving.

Lingling tried to grab him. She felt inexplicably flustered, but still lost her grip.

So all they could do was watch as his tall figure approached the car again.

He seems to have... lost some weight.

Wanqi Fuze was unwilling to say much to Guan Kai, even though Guan Kai had gone too far yesterday and today. He tried to negotiate with him with the intention of resolving the matter.

The aftereffects of his illness in Y province had not yet subsided, and his voice was somewhat hoarse.

"I'm willing to protect you and Guan Yue, on the condition that you never see He Lingling again."

Guan Kai, however, acted as if he hadn't heard him and spoke on his own, as if asking him a question, but more like talking to himself.

"I once wondered, who is Shen Yan to the Wan family that you would go to such lengths to protect him, risking to ruin the relationship between the two families."

“I investigated for a long time but couldn’t find anything. I was too naive back then, only thinking about revenge, but you were too cautious, and I was weak and powerless. Later, it was a blessing in disguise that I saw that you also had a weakness.”

Guan Kai paused slightly at this point, observing Wanqi Fuze's reaction.

To his surprise, his expression remained unchanged, though his face was somewhat pale, as if he had been ill.

From this perspective, even a normally tall and imposing man can appear somewhat vulnerable.

He sighed, seemingly somewhat relieved, but they all knew otherwise.

"I did have ulterior motives for getting into the Normal University. I wanted to know how close you two were and how much she meant to you."

"But the more I look at it, the more something seems off. You two rarely appear at the same time, and even when you do, your attitude towards each other isn't as good as I imagined."

“This isn’t right. I even discovered that He Lingling’s relationship with that person named Shen Yan was much closer than with you. To be honest, I was very discouraged during that time, extremely discouraged, as if all my previous great hopes had been shattered. But what discouraged me even more was that I couldn’t understand why you would help a stranger and send him… Guan Yue to prison.”

Guan Kai stopped abruptly there. He lit a cigarette and tossed one to Wan Qifuze. Wan Qifuze caught it and put it in his mouth.

"It's been so many years, Brother Fuze. When I first came to B City, I went to your house for dinner with my grandfather, and my second aunt always gave me candy to eat."

“We were so close back then. The person I respected most was Grandpa Wan, with all those medals. My favorite peer was you. You never looked at me the same way as others because of my background… That day, when I saw the way Shen Yan looked at He Lingling, I suddenly seemed to understand.”

Wanqi Fuze pressed the lighter, and the sound of it striking someone's heart resonated deeply.

"He Lingling loves him, doesn't she?"

Wanqi Fuze didn't reply, and Guan Kai didn't need him to reply either.

"You must avenge the person she loves."

There was still silence, but he knew he was right.

He chuckled softly.

The car was soon filled with smoke, making it even harder for him to see Wanqi Fuze's expression.

“You said you wanted to protect Guan Yue, brother, I don’t believe you. You said the same thing seven years ago.”

Guan Kai suddenly locked the car. "Get out of the car. Let's have a race. The winner goes."

“There is a better way to solve this,” Wanqi Fuze said calmly.

"No," Guan Kai insisted.

Wanqi Fuze deliberately stalled for time: "I have a house in Europe, I'll send you abroad."

Guan Kai chuckled: "If you leave now, you still have a chance to win."

Wan Qifuze paused for two seconds before finally pushing open the car door. He walked back to his car step by step. Being isolated and helpless, competing with a desperate criminal was not a good decision, but allowing someone to press him further would arouse suspicion.

He was calculating how long it would take for reinforcements to arrive, and how long it would take to get Lingling home safely.

As for him, all the days he had were stolen; he never valued his life.

Both cars stepped on the gas at the same time, speeding along the deserted road. He Lingling was sweating bullets, but she didn't let this distract Wan Qifuze.

As long as she followed him, she would definitely be safe. For some reason, this thought popped into her head.

But Guan Kai wasn't interested in racing at all; his repeated close approaches clearly showed his intention to push them down the hillside.

The road is uphill, with railings on both sides.

Guan Kai suddenly turned the steering wheel and drove in their direction. He Lingling's heart jumped. The two cars collided several times and then drove away, as if they had just missed each other. The atmosphere was as tense as a crossbow bolt.

He Lingling noticed that Wan Qifuze's hair was blown up by the wind, and the veins on his arms were bulging from the exertion. Beads of cold sweat hung on his face, and his lips were bloodless. Her heart tightened; she knew he wasn't in good condition, perhaps his old ailment had flared up again.

Lingling gripped the handle above the carriage: "Wan Fuze, stop the car quickly, this is too dangerous..."

Almost as soon as he finished speaking, a gunshot rang out, hitting the rear window with a "bang," shattering the glass and letting in a gust of wind.

The sudden turn of events caused the car to swerve violently. He Lingling screamed as the car and she were about to crash into the railing. At that speed, she would be seriously injured or killed. But Wan Qifuze opened the window and shouted, "Zheng Long!"

A black Jeep came speeding up from behind and crashed into Guan Kai's car.

Zheng Longxian shouted, "He has a gun!"

He Lingling's face paled, and Wan Qifuze replied in a deep voice, "It wasn't him."

Only then did the group notice another car approaching, and a hand holding a gun sticking out of the window. Five shots were fired at the tires, two of which hit.

Wanqi Fuze lost control of the car, and the two crashed into the roadside railing.

Zheng Long cursed under his breath and chased after the man's car, ramming it into it.

He Lingling only felt that the car they were in was shaking violently and out of control, and was no longer under anyone's control.

The screeching sound of tires pierced their ears as the two of them hurtled towards the roadside railing. At that critical moment, Wanqi Fuze released the steering wheel and threw himself on top of her, wrapping her completely in his body.

The immense force made He Lingling feel as if she had crashed into his arms. In a flash, his familiar scent filled her nostrils, and she was completely enveloped by him.

Just before entering the darkness, I saw that hand holding the gun pointed at me... and then it turned and pointed at him.

Blood dripped from her body, and her mind went blank. Before the overwhelming panic could strike, she shouted, "Wanqi Fuze!"

But it was too late.

The next moment, she felt a huge impact—from the person who was holding her tightly.

The moment the bullet entered his body, he thought it might be better if they fell together, so that they could be together forever in this life.

But that was his Lingling.

He may disappear and no one will care, but Lingling must live happily forever.

So he held her tightly in his arms, clinging to her close.
