Chapter Nine Conflict

As the sun set, the unfamiliar sunlight of this strange world cast long, long shadows of the two of them.

Luckily, Wu Yu and Jack managed to reach a nearby human settlement—the Wasteland City—just before the last rays of the sunset faded away.

Despite being called a city, according to Jack, it was just an ordinary small town. A city wall over ten meters high surrounded the entire town, with only one gate for entry and exit. Thus, a small town became what is called a city.

Moreover, the population of the desolate city is extremely monotonous, consisting only of soldiers, adventurers, innkeepers, traveling merchants, and the relatives of miners.

This place was originally an outpost between the human and demon realms, serving as a beacon tower. Those who came here were either truly loyal patriots or unwelcome exiled soldiers, but regardless of their background, Wu Yu had already labeled them as cannon fodder.

Just kidding. Even if the power system in this world hasn't reached the point where one person can form an army, the demons wouldn't just send one person to invade, would they? With such a small force deployment, they probably don't intend to delay the enemy.

Coincidentally, not far from the desolate city, there was an underground mine. Those big shots, with the attitude that it would be a waste not to use it, gathered a group of slaves and some fearless gold prospectors and started a large-scale desert development project.

As for those relatives who had nowhere to go, they were all stuffed into the desolate city. Although they couldn't participate in economic development, they could provide logistical support for adventurers who liked to venture into the demon realm.

The military was quite pleased with the fact that the military camp had inexplicably turned into a small town. It not only enriched the daily lives of the soldiers, but also gave them a better chance of a strategic retreat should the demons really attack.

Wu Yu was quite interested in this strange city, but unfortunately it was not a place suitable for him to live in, so he should leave as soon as possible.

Looking at the historically significant city wall, Wu Yu was filled with emotion.

As for where Wu Yu, who is illiterate in archaeology, gets the sense of history, just look at the pitted walls, the various strange children's graffiti, and the striking blue moss in the desert. With so many things bearing the marks of time, if you don't use "sense of history" to describe them, do you think Wu Yu can come up with any other adjectives?

Caught up in the atmosphere, Wu Yu thought that it would be quite sophisticated to copy a frontier poem from his previous life. Come to think of it, he had never shown off since he transmigrated. Now that the opportunity was presented to him, he felt uncomfortable if he let it slip by.

Of course, showing off is for others to see. If you just admire yourself in isolation, it becomes a sign of adolescent delusions, and Wu Yu is not one of those delusional people.

As Wu Yu approached the guards at the city gate, he was about to recite a poem when suddenly one of the guards pointed his spear at him, ruining his mood.

"It's past six o'clock, and the city gates are no longer open. Please come back tomorrow," the soldier said with a stern face.

"No, soldier, we've been wandering outside for many days. Putting aside the terrible living conditions, the main problem is that we've run out of supplies. We haven't eaten for a whole day. I see it's not even dark yet. Could you please make an exception and let us in today?"

Upon hearing the guard's words, Wu Yu was unwilling to agree and abandoned any pretense of bravado, quickly pleading pitifully.

Wu Yu wasn't lying. After breakfast today, Jack told him that the food was all gone, so they hadn't even had lunch. This couldn't be blamed on Jack; he must have only prepared enough food for one person. Wu Yu was grateful to Jack for his thorough preparation in order to have food to eat these past few days.

"Get out of here! This is a military stronghold. We don't allow unauthorized personnel to act recklessly. If you don't leave, don't blame us for using force!" the soldier shouted fiercely, showing no sympathy for Wu Yu whatsoever.

Having grown up in a civilized society, Wu Yu was terrified at the sight of such barbaric people. He dared not utter a word in response and could only inwardly complain that he would have to spend another night in the sand.

"Wait, Brother Bing, I wonder if these little gadgets can help me open the door to convenience?" Jack's voice rang out behind Wu Yu.

Wu Yu turned around and saw Jack stretching out his hand, his fingers gleaming with a golden light. That was the color of a tycoon! The eight quiet gold coins spoke of its extraordinary nature and Wu Yu's ordinariness.

Wu Yu suddenly felt a pang in his heart. He remembered that he seemed to owe Jack three gold coins. He hadn't felt anything before because it was just a verbal promise, but now that he saw the real thing, Wu Yu suddenly doubted whether he could pay off the debt. It was like the numbers on Alipay were not as tempting as physical banknotes.

Look, those soldiers who were just acting all unyielding are now staring intently at Jack's palm. The moment the palm moves, their eyes follow it.

"Ahem, sir, protecting our country is the duty of us soldiers. As a citizen of our empire, how can we allow you to be in danger? Please come in quickly, and we will certainly provide you with the best protection." The soldier coughed and then spoke righteously.

Why is there such a big difference between people? But considering that he was also a beneficiary and a partner of justice, Wu Yu didn't plan to jump out and denounce this dirty deal.

But what followed was not what was expected.

"Heh." Jack sneered, his previously somewhat friendly smile vanishing instantly, replaced by a coldness and ruthlessness that Wu Yu had never seen before.
