Take a Bite of the Widow (GB)

In the spring of the third year of the Shangwu era, Zhang Chunfeng was promoted to the position of Chancellor of the Court. Wearing a red robe, he rode a horse swiftly, enjoying all the sights of C...

There has always been a mistake between us.

There has always been a mistake between us.

Madam Li hurriedly bowed to Zhou Zhengdu, "Young Master Zhou, what brings you here?" After asking, Madam Li immediately went to call Zhang Chunfeng.

Zhang Chunfeng emerged from the house, looking impatient. She glanced at Li Xiuman, who had been avoiding her for the past few days, and Li Xiuman quickly turned away. Zhang Chunfeng then looked at Zhou Zhengdu, also puzzled, and asked, "What are you doing here?"

Zhou Zhengdu quickly smiled, and the guards behind him immediately began carrying boxes of things into the courtyard.

“I heard that Chunfeng’s elder brother is ill, so I found some medicinal herbs. Oh, and I also found a doctor.” An old man stepped out from behind Zhou Zhengdu.

“His ancestors were imperial physicians in the palace, and their medical skills were superb. Let him take a look at my brother as well,” Zhou Zhengdu said.

When Li heard that the doctor's ancestors had treated the emperor, she was overjoyed and thanked Zhou Zhengdu profusely, then asked Li Xiuman to lead the doctor inside.

Li Xiuman quickly led the doctor into the house, when he suddenly noticed the jade pendant hanging from Zhou Zhengdu's belt. His Qilin jade pendant was exactly the same as Zhang Chunfeng's, and the two pendants together made a pair.

Zhou Zhengdu noticed Li Xiuman at this moment and raised an eyebrow slightly. Li Xiuman hurriedly entered the house, and Zhou Zhengdu didn't speak to anyone.

Only Zhou Zhengdu and Zhang Chunfeng remained in the courtyard, so the two went into Zhang Chunfeng's room and sat down.

Having known each other for so long, this was the first time Zhou Zhengdu had come to Zhang Chunfeng's place. In his mind, Zhang Chunfeng was unparalleled in the world and should have been born to be rich and powerful, not to live in such a place.

"Spring Breeze, I've wanted you to move to the house in the south of the city for ages, why did you insist on living here!"

Zhang Chunfeng sneered, "I only teach you to read, and I've already moved into your private residence. If people find out, they'll think we have some improper relationship."

Zhou Zhengdu nodded slightly, but in his heart he thought that it would be good if there was some improper relationship between them, so that he wouldn't have to wait for her day and night.

"Chunfeng is right, I didn't think it through." Zhou Zhengdu quickly apologized, his eyes, as deep as a dark well, didn't dare to look directly at Zhang Chunfeng, but instead pretended to look around as if scanning Zhang Chunfeng's face.

“I’ve calculated that you haven’t been to my residence for eight days, and after hearing about your brother’s affairs, you’ve come uninvited.”

"Didn't I already tell you what to read and write?"

“I… I’ve completed all my homework as you instructed, but… since you’re not here, I…” Zhou Zhengdu lowered his voice, “I miss you a little.”

Li Shi realized that she was alone in the room, so she asked Li Xiuman to make tea, one cup for the doctor and one cup for Young Master Zhou.

After receiving the order, Li Xiuman brewed tea and took it to Zhang Chunfeng's door.

Before he could even knock, Zhang Chunfeng retorted, "What do you want me to do? Just focus on your studies."

"But I just miss you! I don't know why!"

Lee Soo-man froze on the spot, the hot tea in his hand suddenly feeling a chill; he was caught between a rock and a hard place.

"Don't say such nonsense." Zhang Chunfeng frowned in annoyance. She had been really annoyed these past few days because of Li Xiuman.

“Spring Breeze, are you in a bad mood? How about we go to Zuixianlou again? We had so much fun that day! We’ll order all your favorite dishes again. If you don’t like that, we can go horseback riding and archery. My father saw how hard I was learning and specially gave me a fine horse. I’ll give it to you. Tell me, I’ll give you whatever you want. Don’t be unhappy.” Zhou Zhengdu’s voice was loud and clear.

Every word pierced Li Xiuman's heart, leaving him heartbroken. Zhou Zhengdu could give him so much, but what could he give Zhang Chunfeng? Zhang Chunfeng shouldn't be in this remote village, indulging in pleasure with him, but rather in a drunken stupor with someone like Zhou Zhengdu at the Drunken Immortal Pavilion.

Li Xiuman, steadying his trembling body, was about to leave when Zhang Chunfeng's door suddenly opened.

Upon seeing those peach blossom eyes again, Lee Soo-man hurriedly lowered his head.

"How long have you been here, sister-in-law? Why haven't you said anything?"

Lee Soo-man quickly placed the tea he was holding on the table.

"Mother was afraid that Young Master Zhou would be thirsty, so she sent me to bring him tea," he said, his head bowed. But out of the corner of his eye, he noticed that not only were their jade pendants a pair, but even their shoes and jade belts were identical. His light blue silk robe, paired with her light blue brocade, made them a perfect match, a golden couple indeed.

Zhou Zhengdu didn't stand on ceremony, drank the tea, and immediately exclaimed, "Spring Breeze, it's actually my favorite Baihao Yinzhen tea! Is this the jar I gave you for your birthday last year?"

"But you now love drinking Lu'an Melon Seed tea, and you haven't thrown this can away yet."

Zhou Zhengdu smiled, but Li Xiuman wanted to escape. The two were so familiar with each other; Zhou Zhengdu seemed to know everything about Zhang Chunfeng, while Li Xiuman knew nothing.

He drank plain water all the time and knew nothing about Baihao Yinzhen or Liuan Guapian tea. He knew nothing about tea, what Zhang Chunfeng liked to drink, or even when Zhang Chunfeng's birthday was. For a moment, Li Xiuman doubted whether his previous relationship with Zhang Chunfeng was truly real. Had they really gotten together after only a few encounters? But he truly knew nothing about Zhang Chunfeng.

"Chunfeng, you drink too." Zhou Zhengdu smiled and actually reached out to take Zhang Chunfeng's hand!

Lee Soo-man immediately turned around and said, "I'll go check on the doctor." His voice was barely audible as he spoke, and he quickly left.

Once Li Xiuman left, Zhou Zhengdu withdrew his hand that had been trying to pull Zhang Chunfeng. He wouldn't actually pull Zhang Chunfeng, because he knew that Zhang Chunfeng had never liked him.

Zhou Zhengdu still had a smile on his face, but his hands, hidden in his sleeves, were clenched tightly into his palms.

"Spring Breeze, I had no idea you had such a beautiful sister-in-law," he said sourly.

"It's been over a month," Zhang Chunfeng said frankly.

"Oh? He looks familiar. You were there for him at Zuixianlou that day."

Zhang Chunfeng nodded, "Not bad."

Zhou Zhengdu sighed again, "How could such a beautiful woman become a man's wife? What a pity."

Zhang Chunfeng sneered, "What's there to regret? He and my brother are incompatible according to their birth charts and fates. Nine out of ten will die or be injured. They will be separated sooner or later."

"Ah, if he becomes a male wife, it might be difficult for him to remarry."

"Remarry?" Zhang Chunfeng sneered even more, Li Xiuman could never dream of remarrying.

Zhou Zhengdu smiled and said, "It's nothing. I just wanted to see you before I went back."

Just then, the doctor that Zhou Zhengdu had summoned also came out of the house.

"He's fine, he should wake up in a few days," the doctor said.

Li asked anxiously, "How many days is 'wait a few days'? My son has been unconscious for five days!"

"Sleeping is a form of rest for him. I can't say exactly how many more days he'll need to sleep. Three or four days is possible, but seven or eight days is also possible." After saying this, the doctor stopped answering.

“Spring Breeze, since that’s the case, go and see Young Master Zhou off,” said Madam Li.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Chunfeng only escorted Zhou Zhengdu to the door. Just then, a petal fell on Zhang Chunfeng's head. Zhou Zhengdu reached out, smiling, and gently stroked Zhang Chunfeng's hair, plucking the petal from her hair.

This scene was witnessed by Lee Soo-man, and he felt so moved that he wanted to cry on the spot.

He finally managed to hold back.

She dutifully cooked the meal, served Li Shi until she ate and went to bed, and after finishing all her own tasks, she brought hot water to Zhang Chuntian's room to wipe her body.

He was wiping when Zhang Chunfeng came in.

Zhang Chunfeng hugged him from behind, saying, "Sister-in-law's waist has gotten thinner." Zhang Chunfeng buried his face in Li Xiuman's neck, greedily inhaling her scent.

Li Xiuman broke free from Zhang Chunfeng's hand.

"Don't do that," he said coldly.

Zhang Chunfeng immediately sensed something was wrong. Usually, when Li Xiuman refused, he would say, "Chunfeng, don't do this," or "Chunfeng, please don't." Today, however, it was just a cold, curt response.

"Sister-in-law, I only want you," Zhang Chunfeng explained, truly having no desire to have anything more with Li Xiuman.

Lee Soo-man lowered his head and said, "From now on, don't think about me anymore."

Zhang Chunfeng stood there, stunned, unable to understand the meaning behind Li Xiuman's words, "from now on".

“I don’t understand, sister-in-law, please explain clearly.”

"I've thought about it carefully. You're still young, and you'll meet even better people in the future. If you pass the imperial examinations, all the men in the world will be..."

"Shut up!" Zhang Chunfeng shouted sharply, her once tender and affectionate eyes now bloodshot as she stared intently at Li Xiuman. "Sister-in-law, are you going to push me towards someone else?!"

"I didn't like what you said last time, and I like what you said even less this time!"

Lee Soo-man turned his head and said, "I'm not good with words and only know a few characters. I'm not good at saying nice things."

"Fine, if you can't speak, then don't." Zhang Chunfeng suddenly hugged Li Xiuman. "Mouths are for kissing, not for speaking."

Zhang Chunfeng used brute force, grabbing Li Xiuman tightly by the neck and kissing him. This kiss was no longer filled with sweet love, but with possessiveness, invasion, dissatisfaction, and plunder.

Li Xiuman grabbed Zhang Chunfeng's wrist and struggled. He hardened his heart and bit Zhang Chunfeng's lip with a little force.

Despite the pain, Zhang Chunfeng refused to let go, instead entwining himself with Li Xiuman amidst the blood. The stench of blood filled their mouths, and Li Xiuman's eyes reddened, his heart aching as if it would explode. How could he not feel sorry for Zhang Chunfeng? Yet, he truly couldn't.

Lee Soo-man used all his strength to shove the man away. Zhang Chunfeng took a few steps back, not even wiping the blood from his lips, and just stared at Lee Soo-man.

"I have said all I need to say. Everything between us was a mistake from the start."
