Unmarried with a child, Shen Sisi became infamously known as a “damaged woman.” She was coaxed into marriage by the supposedly “injured and disabled” Commander Gu.
She thought she was walking...
"But what?" Gu Chengfeng's body stiffened, and his smile froze.
“But we’ve agreed that once you’re cured, we’ll get a divorce.” Chen Sisi said firmly, leaving no room for argument: “Political Commissar Feng, you can be a witness.”
"No, why?" Feng Yanzhou didn't understand. Wouldn't it be a double blessing if the illness were cured? Why would they want a divorce?
Chen Sisi's heart sank. She knew that Gu Chengfeng had a childhood sweetheart with whom he had a very good relationship since childhood. He was sent to Lin County because he got into a fight with someone over that girl.
That Qingmei also lived in the military compound and was still in college. If it weren't for his injuries, they would have been together long ago.
If Gu Chengfeng can be cured...
She definitely wants a divorce; she doesn't want to break up a couple in love.
Chen Sisi said in a deep voice, "For no reason... this is the only condition I insist on."
Although she knew she had no right to make demands.
Gu Chengfeng's knuckles turned white from clenching his fists. She really did... only agreed to marry him out of pity. Did she still not forget that man?
He gritted his teeth so hard they were almost ground to powder: "Fine, whatever you say!"
What should have been a joyous occasion turned into something more than a smile for Gu Chengfeng.
Feng Yanzhou also squinted, his head throbbing.
I thought Shen Sisi was a smart person who knew how to assess the situation and choose Gu Chengfeng.
Unexpectedly, she offered such conditions, leaving Gu Chengfeng absolutely no way out.
He silently cast a sympathetic glance at Gu Chengfeng, then lifted Niu Niu up with both hands, breaking the silence first: "Um... Niu Niu, you're going to have a new daddy..."
Niu Niu didn't know what the adults were talking about, but when she heard the words "new dad," she was so happy that she danced around.
Yay, she has a dad now!
No longer a wild child born of a mother but raised by no father!
But... is this bearded uncle the new dad?
Niu Niu pouted, her eyes, which looked too big because she was too thin, timidly scrutinizing Gu Chengfeng.
Although this uncle was nice, she preferred the uncle Feng who was holding her.
Why can't Uncle Feng be her father?
I really want my mom to marry Uncle Feng...
Gu Chengfeng was at a loss for words when he was called "new dad," and his gaze towards Niu Niu softened even more.
Chen Sisi blushed and didn't even dare to lift her head.
Political Commissar Feng is so... direct!
Now that the matter has been settled, the next step is to go back and submit a report.
If you want to get married to a military officer, the other party will need to be investigated and undergo a political review.
Feng Yanzhou watched as Chen Sisi fell into deep thought. This sister-in-law's background and story... that's going to be tricky!
In front of Shen Sisi, Feng Yanzhou did not dare to show his true feelings, but only gave Gu Chengfeng a wink.
“Well, you and your wife can stay in Linxian County with peace of mind. Leave the paperwork to me. Getting married is a big deal. I’ll first inform the village on your behalf and go back early tonight to report to the leaders,” Feng Yanzhou said.
Gu Chengfeng hummed in agreement and gave him an approving look.
"Go ahead, and when you get back, I'll invite you over for drinks."
Chen Sisi's mind was filled with thoughts of "sister-in-law, sister-in-law," and she could barely speak properly: "Um... thank you, Political Commissar Feng."
"Still calling him political commissar? Call him Brother Feng."
"Thank you, Brother Feng!"
That sweet "Brother Feng" made Feng Yanzhou grin from ear to ear. He forced a smile and assured him, "Don't worry, I've got your happiness covered."
Feng Yanzhou left in a hurry, otherwise he would have missed the tractor to Jinfeng Village.
Only Chen Sisi and Gu Chengfeng remained, with a little girl, Niu Niu, standing between them with wide, curious eyes.
Gu Chengfeng blushed and his heart pounded. Seeing that Shen Sisi was also lost in thought, he spoke first: "Um... shall we go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy some things?"
Chen Sisi snapped out of her reverie: "Buy something?"
"Such a big thing, shouldn't we tell our family?"
After his reminder, I began to think of my aunt.
She only had her aunt left in Linxian County, so she really needed to talk to her aunt first about such a big event as getting married.
I have to catch a train tomorrow, so time is very tight.
So, without much hesitation, Chen Sisi nodded in agreement after a moment's thought.
"You're very thoughtful; we should talk to them about it."
She stood up, opened her arms to pick up Niu Niu, but Gu Chengfeng snatched her away, saying, "Let me do it!"
Niu Niu struggled a little, but in his arms she was like a kitten being tickled. In the end she could only give up struggling and let those strong arms hold her tightly.
"It's windy outside, put on your scarf. I'll take care of the child!" Gu Chengfeng reached out to adjust the knitted scarf around her neck and noticed that it had been torn at some point.
"I'll buy you a new scarf when we go to the supply and marketing cooperative later."
Chen Sisi lowered her head and saw the conspicuous hole: "No need..."
Gu Chengfeng didn't give her a chance to refuse: "I have more tickets, and I don't usually need them in the military camp, so I might as well keep them."
Shen Sisi knew he was saying that on purpose, and she knew she couldn't argue with him, so she could only blush and say, "Then... thank you!"
"What are you thanking me for? We'll be husband and wife soon. This is what I should do. I, Gu Chengfeng, am not one to suffer hardship or be wronged."
He finished speaking with his neck stiffened, not daring to look at Shen Sisi's expression, and turned to walk out while holding Niu Niu.
He had long legs and big strides, and he quickly put a distance between them. She stared at his back in deep thought, and was about to catch up when she noticed that Gu Chengfeng had slowed down and was subconsciously waiting for her.
Gazing at his tall, handsome back, a slight smile curved her lips as she pondered.
