Chapter 379 Joining the Resistance (10) - Starting as an Assistant

As activity ceased, the damp heat inside the room gradually dissipated.

Si Zhong looked at Ning Shu's profile, who had fallen into a deep sleep after he had tormented her, and felt a pang of heartache.

She has lost weight.

She must have had a tough time these past three months. Not only has her face gotten thinner, but she's also lost weight, though the muscles in her arms and legs have become much firmer.

He knew that Ning Shu wanted to escape reality, and couldn't fall asleep even though she wanted to, so this was the only way she could do it.

Ning Shu did indeed fall asleep as she wished, but she was still restless in her dreams.

In her dream, her parents seemed to be blaming her, saying that she was not their daughter. She tried to explain, but her parents wouldn't listen and just kept moving away from her.

The scene shifts, and her child appears before her eyes. The child has grown up and looks a lot like Si Zhong.

Si Zhong asked the child to call her "Mom," but the child refused, saying that she wasn't her mother because she was human, not a Soya alien.

"It's nothing, what time is it?" Ning Shu asked, looking at the dimly lit room.

Si Zhong picked up the personal computer on the bedside table to check the time: "It's past 8 p.m. Are you hungry? I'll have someone bring you some food."

Ning Shu hesitated for a moment, then nodded.

Si Zhong used his personal terminal to contact the butler to prepare dinner, then got up and went into the bathroom.

After filling the tub with water, let Ning Shu in: "The water's ready. You can take a bath or just rinse off and come right out. The food won't be ready that quickly."

Ning Shu hadn't originally planned to take a bath, but upon hearing that the meal wouldn't be ready soon, she decided to soak for a while anyway.

When she came out, she found that Si Zhong had already tidied up and was sitting on the small sofa waiting for her. He seemed to have showered as well, probably because he went to the bathroom in another room.

"Let's go." Si Zhong saw her come out, took her hand, and went to the restaurant to eat together.

The table was laden with a variety of dishes, a mix of meat and vegetables, and a soup.

Si Zhong immediately served her soup: "Look how thin you are. Drink some soup to nourish your body. I guess you haven't been eating well outside."

Ning Shu silently accepted the soup and ate her meal quietly.

A few days later, Ning Shu received the DNA test results, which confirmed what Si Zhong had said—she had a child.

The answer was as expected, and Ning Shu felt a mix of emotions, finding it hard to articulate her feelings.

Life went on uneventfully, and Si Zhong did not agree with Si Chen's suggestion, so he never arranged a dinner for the three of them.

Si Zhong quickly realized that something was wrong with Ning Shu; she was too quiet, a stark contrast to her usual self.

He felt somewhat sorry for Ning Shu. She was such a lively and cheerful person, but now she had become taciturn, all because of him.

That day, after the two finished their deep conversation, Si Zhong couldn't help but say, "A Ning, don't be like this, it hurts my heart."

Whether Ning Shu was too tired or simply didn't want to talk to him, she didn't respond for a long time.

Si Zhong was very upset: "Tell me, whatever you want, I'll agree to it, as long as you're happy."

He didn't want her to live like a walking corpse; he wanted her to be happy.

After a long silence, Ning Shu finally spoke up: "I want to go to work. Can you arrange a job for me?"

Just want to go to work?

This was easy enough. Just as Si Zhong was about to speak, Ning Shu added, "I want to work at Chongzheng Building."

This is a bit difficult. My brother is the first to object, but Ning Shu rarely makes requests, and he doesn't want to disappoint her.

"Let me think about it."

Upon hearing this, Ning Shu suddenly hugged Si Zhong tightly, seemingly to "repay" him, and moved her hand from behind him to in front of him, touching his abs.

Si Zhong suddenly groaned, unable to resist Ning Shu's teasing any longer. He rolled over and pinned her down again: "Weren't you full yet? It's my fault. This time I'll try to let you sleep until dawn."

Si Chen rejected Si Zhong's proposal.

He was already wary of Ning Shu. He couldn't separate the two of them, so why would he want to keep Ning Shu by his side? Absolutely not.

Si Zhong didn't expect to get Si Chen's permission: "Brother, I'm just informing you that I've decided to arrange for A Ning to be my assistant. I'll pay her salary, as long as she's not involved in core matters."

Ning Shu's goal was to work at Chongzheng Building. He didn't have any requirements for the job content, so he arranged for her to be his personal assistant, so that she wouldn't be involved in core affairs, but he could still see her often.

That's the best of both worlds!

Si Chen was so angry at his younger brother that he almost vomited blood. He pointed at Si Zhong's nose and yelled, "You think you don't know what she's thinking? Are you out of your mind? Are you determined to harm the interests of Soya Star?"

Si Zhong was speechless: "How did this involve Soya Star? We haven't taken over Blue Star yet; we were just invited as guests."

Besides, she's your sister-in-law; don't think so badly of her.

Screw your sister-in-law!

Si Chen really wanted to beat up Si Zhong, but he knew his younger brother's personality well; the more he tried to stop him, the more agitated he became.

Seeing his determined look, Si Chen finally gave in:

"If you insist on bringing her in, fine, but she can't stay with you. She'll stay with me and be my assistant. If you don't agree, then forget about it."

Si Zhong was completely bewildered. Put her next to her brother? This wasn't good! What if her brother bullied Ning Shu?

Faced with Si Chen's death stare, Si Zhong felt he couldn't insist any longer. After all, he was in the wrong, and as long as the matter could be accomplished, a compromise was fine.

"Okay, but brother, don't bully her."

Si Chen snorted coldly: "If you don't want her to be bullied, then let her stay at home. What job doesn't involve being mistreated? You get punished for your mistakes too, who's an exception?"

Si Zhong: But she's my woman!

He dared not say this to Si Chen, otherwise the other party would renege on his promise in a heartbeat.

When Si Zhong told Ning Shu the results, Ning Shu didn't even frown; she just smiled and thanked Si Zhong.

So, after a month of being idle, Ning Shu finally stepped back into the workplace, as Si Chen's assistant.

On her first day at work, it was the same person who had previously "invited" her to meet Si Chen who came to take her to the company.

Bai Yan felt that the woman in front of him was very unusual. She had come as Mr. Si's woman before, but now she was joining the company as Mr. Si's assistant.

He was only glad that he hadn't neglected her because of Mr. Si's attitude towards her, otherwise he wouldn't know how to face her now.

Bai Yan introduced Ning Shu to the people in his department one by one, and finally led her to her workstation:

"This is your seat. Your work will be arranged directly by Mr. Si. Please get used to it first, and feel free to ask me if you have any questions."

Ning Shu nodded and sat down, only to find that her workstation was right outside Si Chen's office, so Si Chen could see her as soon as he opened the door.

Although she knew that Si Chen wanted to keep an eye on her, there was no need to be so "under his nose".
